Wi-Fi calling overseas: what Australians should check

Keep the hotel Wi-Fi call, the Australian service and the number you need to dial in the same plan before testing the feature overseas.

What the carriers confirm about overseas use

Telstra’s current support page says compatible customers can make and receive calls back to Australia over overseas Wi-Fi at no additional charge. It says calls to other destinations are not enabled in that overseas mode, and overseas emergency calling is unsupported. It also warns that flight-mode location uncertainty can affect international-call charging. For example, calling an Australian landline while connected through that supported Telstra mode is a different job from calling your Japanese hotel. The overseas page does not enable the latter through Wi-Fi calling; use an eligible mobile voice service or the hotel’s app/email contact instead.

We could not establish a sufficiently current, publicly readable overseas rule for Optus or Vodafone in this review. Optus’s older business FAQ is not a reliable substitute for confirmation of today’s consumer plan. Treat overseas Wi-Fi calling on those services as unconfirmed until your provider confirms it for your account. A setting that works at home does not establish overseas eligibility.

For a smaller provider, check that provider’s own answer. Sharing Telstra, Optus or Vodafone radio coverage does not guarantee the same Wi-Fi calling entitlement.

Ask five precise questions

  1. Does this exact plan support Wi-Fi calling in the country I am visiting?
  2. Can I receive calls as well as call Australian numbers?
  3. Does SMS over Wi-Fi work on my phone and plan, including verification messages?
  4. How are calls to local numbers, third countries, voicemail and special numbers charged?
  5. Must the feature be activated or tested while I am still in Australia?

Save the provider’s answer with its date. A forum report from a different handset can suggest a question to ask; it cannot confirm your account’s billing rules.

Wi-Fi calling and using the other SIM’s data are different checks

Some phones can carry your Australian line’s calls over the other SIM’s data. Apple documents this for supported combinations of phone, carrier and settings, so it doesn’t mean every Australian mobile service can call through every travel eSIM. Confirm that exact setup with the carrier first.

Keep the travel eSIM selected for travel data and review your home line’s roaming settings. Do not enable Allow Mobile Data Switching as a universal fix: it can change which line supplies data. Ask the carrier whether your exact phone can carry that line’s calls through the travel eSIM’s data without switching data to the Australian line. Without a clear supported setup and charging answer, leave automatic switching off and use trusted Wi-Fi or an app call.

How to test without confusing the result

Before departure, enable the carrier feature and test it on trusted Wi-Fi. After arrival, look for the carrier’s Wi-Fi calling indicator before treating a normal dialler call as a Wi-Fi call. Confirm the charge treatment first. A successful call without the indicator may have used mobile roaming.

If SMS verification is essential, enable and test the service before departure using your own bank’s supported verification route; do not assume one successful phone call establishes SMS delivery. Set up the bank’s available app-based alternative at home too. If you leave Wi-Fi coverage, the call may drop or use a different supported route. Telstra says its overseas Wi-Fi calls drop when leaving Wi-Fi and that VPNs are unsupported.

If the feature is unavailable

Use an agreed internet calling app for family, or check an official international contact number and an appropriate voice service for businesses. The calling Australia guide separates these options. Do not troubleshoot by repeatedly changing SIMs, disabling account protection or deleting your travel profile.
