Turn your Yellowstone reservation into a permit
A Yellowstone backcountry reservation is a good reason to celebrate, but the walk has to wait until you have the actual permit. The confirmation in your inbox holds an itinerary. During the park’s peak permit season, a ranger still needs to review that itinerary and issue the document you take on the trip.
This matters particularly when Yellowstone sits inside a bigger American road trip. An arrival date, a campsite date and a permit-office opening date are three different things. Getting two of them right does not persuade the third to cooperate.
For a reserved trip starting between 15 May and 31 October, the published process is to collect your backcountry permit in person, no more than two days before the start. You need it before setting off. The rules below were reviewed on 21 October 2026 and concern independent backcountry camping, rather than roadside campgrounds or winter permits. First, identify what you have actually secured
The emails can look similar, but each stage leaves a different job to do:
| What you hold | What it gives you | What still has to happen |
|---|---|---|
| An early-access lottery timeslot | An opportunity to book available backcountry campsites before general reservations open | Choose and reserve a complete available itinerary. The award does not reserve a site. |
| A campsite reservation | The reserved sites and nights for your trip | Collect the actual permit through the required issuing process. |
| An issued backcountry permit | Permission for the approved backcountry itinerary | Follow that itinerary and its conditions; the permit does not override closures or make a route suitable for your group. |
The park makes approximately 75% of backcountry sites available for advance reservation and retains at least 25% for walk-up permits. Its published early-access lottery runs in March, with assigned booking times in April and general reservations opening on 26 April. If you receive early access but the sites you want are gone, you have not won a claim on them. An alternative has to work as an actual journey, not merely as a row of available boxes. Build the trip around the campsites’ permitted use
Yellowstone backcountry bookings specify designated campsites, and the booking system distinguishes how you are travelling. A site’s availability is therefore only the first question. A campsite restricted to boat access is not a spare place for a walking party simply because it appears on the map.
On Recreation.gov, walkers cannot book sites restricted to stock, non-motorised boats or boats. Each site also has its own capacity and stay limit. The general maximum is three consecutive nights at one campsite, but some allow only one or two. Choose the correct travel type before comparing vacancies, then assemble every night of the trip before submitting the reservation. Site restrictions and booking conditions
A standard reservation can cover up to 14 nights of continuous travel. That does not turn it into a backcountry version of a hotel loyalty account for your whole driving holiday. If you finish one walk, return to a car and drive to another trailhead for a second overnight walk, those are separate trips requiring separate reservations. Conversely, moving on foot between different reserved sites can form one continuous itinerary. Yellowstone itinerary rules
Site capacity is a real group limit, too. Splitting a large party across separate permits is not permission to reunite everyone at one small campsite for dinner. Recreation.gov requires groups exceeding a site’s capacity to have separate permits and leaders and to cook, eat and sleep separately, without congregating beyond that capacity.
Put permit collection into the road-trip calendar
For a trip beginning on 31 July, the two-day collection window is 29, 30 or 31 July. Arriving in the area on 28 July does not bring that window forward. Collecting on the start date is permitted, but the walk must wait until the office has issued the permit.
The reservation holder can name one additional permit holder when making the reservation. Otherwise, the reservation is non-transferable. Add that person at the beginning if you need a second named holder; do not plan around handing the confirmation to an unlisted friend after the original holder drops out. Holder and collection requirements
The late-season trap is the office itself. The peak permit process extends to 31 October, but that does not mean every backcountry counter stays open until then. In the park’s published 2026 operating calendar, West Yellowstone’s backcountry office closed on 12 October, while the visitor centre’s NPS desk continued to 31 October. An open visitor centre was not an open backcountry permit counter. Official operating dates
For late October 2026, do not build an arrival plan around West Yellowstone collection. Its backcountry counter has closed for the season. The late-season office notices checked for this guide also disagree, so they do not establish a reliable replacement counter to name here. This article’s collection timetable is for a trip during an office’s published operating season. It does not provide a workable late-October pickup itinerary, and a reservation alone still does not authorise the walk.
What a change to the trip actually means
Some changes can be made to an existing reservation, but moving the start date is not one of them.
| Change you want | Published rule and practical consequence |
|---|---|
| Start a day later | Cancel and rebook. The replacement itinerary needs available sites; the original booking does not shift with you. |
| Change a campsite | Recreation.gov allows available itinerary changes online up to two days before the trip. A vacancy must fit the permitted travel type and group. |
| Change group size or members | These can be changed before permit issue, within site limits; additional people can increase the camping charge. |
| Send an unlisted person to take over | Reservations are non-transferable beyond the additional holder named when booking. Do not treat a forwarded email as a transfer. |
| Add an overnight walk after a car transfer | Make a separate reservation for that separate trip. |
The issuing ranger reviews the itinerary before providing the permit. A booking accepted online is not a professional judgement that the distances, conditions or demands suit your group. Leave room for the issuing conversation rather than setting an inflexible departure time before the permit is in your hands. Changes and permit rules
Count the fee once, then count every person-night
Recreation.gov lists a US$10 non-refundable lottery application/reservation fee and a US$5 recreation fee per person per night. A reservation made through an awarded early-access timeslot does not incur another US$10 reservation charge on top of the lottery fee.
For three people camping for two nights, the reservation-related total is therefore US$40: US$10 plus 3 × 2 × US$5. That is not an all-inclusive Yellowstone holiday price; park entrance fees are separate. Current booking fees
For cancellations, use the deadline on the booking page: three or more full days before the start for a refund of the recreation fees. Less than three full days means those fees are not refunded, and the US$10 fee remains non-refundable. The NPS overview contains conflicting wording about the 72-hour period, so do not rely on cancelling inside that window to recover the camping charge. The booking page’s earlier deadline is the sensible one to work to.
Sort the online jobs before leaving town
Keep the reservation details, issued permit and essential trip information available offline. Yellowstone warns that mobile service is limited or non-existent in much of the park; a travel eSIM is not a backcountry navigation or emergency system.
For airports, towns and the other connected parts of the holiday, our USA eSIM, roaming and local SIM comparison helps you choose the service for booking messages and changes.
Deal with booking changes while you have a connection, then carry what the walk actually requires. The best thing your phone can do for the permit appointment is produce the right information, rather than spend the morning searching for a signal.
