Give each Azores island actual time before booking its hotel
An Azores itinerary can look beautifully compact until you give every move its own day. Three nights on an island usually mean two full days there, while a quick ferry outing can become a surprisingly short visit once the return check-in is included. The islands are the holiday; packing, collecting cars and finding terminals are the bits trying to steal it.
For a first multi-island trip, name the experiences you want time for, count the full days they need, then join the islands with dated flights and ferries. Horta on Faial and Madalena on Pico make a useful ferry pairing. For flights, Australian holidaymakers should compare ordinary visitor fares and the Azores Air Pass, rather than budget around resident subsidies. A cheap fare you cannot buy is not much of a bargain.
Give each island a reason to be there
Pico is a good example of why an island deserves more than a tick. Its landscape carries both a huge volcanic mountain and the much smaller marks of people making a living around it: stone-walled vineyard plots, old cart ruts and ramps used to roll wine barrels towards boats. Madalena, São Roque and Lajes are different places on the same island, with wine and whaling collections distributed between them. Arriving at one harbour does not put all of that on your doorstep. Visit Portugal’s Pico overview
If that landscape is a major reason for your trip, sleep on Pico. If you mainly want a short visit around Madalena while based on Faial, a ferry outing can make sense. Those are different holidays, even though both can be described as “doing Pico”.
Apply the same test before adding another island: name the experience you want, give it a realistic block of time, then decide whether another hotel move helps. Adding an island solely because it is nearby is how a relaxing itinerary acquires a project manager.
Use ports, not just island names
Atlânticoline’s booking system identifies Horta as Faial, Madalena and Cais do Pico as separate Pico ports, and Velas and Calheta as separate São Jorge ports. On Terceira, Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória are also distinct choices. These names matter when arranging accommodation or a pickup; “Pico ferry terminal” is not a sufficiently precise destination. Official port list and timetable
For a simple Faial–Pico visit, search Horta–Madalena in both directions. Build a longer sequence from individual dated legs, rather than assuming the presence of an island in a dropdown means every pair of islands is connected on your dates.
The operator also displays passenger capacity separately from vehicle capacity. Check both directions for the passengers and any vehicle before reserving a hotel around the crossing.
What a short crossing actually buys you
Here is a worked example from the operator’s Tuesday 20 October 2026 timetable. It illustrates the time available ashore, rather than recommending a future sailing. It showed Horta–Madalena at 14:15–14:45, with a return at 18:00–18:30 and return check-in closing at 17:40. That leaves 2 hours 55 minutes between the scheduled arrival and return check-in, before disembarkation or travel around Pico. Published dated timetable
That is an afternoon visit, not a full island day. It could suit someone whose priority is spending a little time in Madalena, but we wouldn’t use it as the foundation for a wide-ranging Pico itinerary. Sleeping on Pico gives you a much better starting point for several separate stops.
There is another useful lesson in that same result: the 18:00 return showed passenger availability but no car availability. A foot-passenger outing and a car-based outing therefore had different answers. Those historical indicators do not describe seats available today, but they show why buying only the outward vehicle crossing leaves half the problem unsolved.
For a straightforward holiday, use separate island car hires unless your actual rental agreement permits ferry transport and both vehicle crossings are available. That is a planning recommendation, not a claim that every rental company bans ferries.
Count full days before adding more beds
Consider an illustrative eight-night plan, with no particular flights or hotels assumed available:
| Allocation | What it gives you | What it does not give you |
|---|---|---|
| Nights 1–4 on São Miguel | Three full days between arrival and the next move | Four uninterrupted sightseeing days |
| Nights 5–6 on Pico | One full day, with arrival and departure days around it | Two full days to spread out several activities |
| Night 7 on Faial | Parts of the arrival and departure days | A full day free of a hotel move |
| Night 8 on the island of your flight out | A night back at the departure base | A guarantee against subsequent disruption |
This is a count of time, not a recommended flight sequence. The result is revealing: eight nights spread this way produce four full days without an accommodation move, and only one of those is on Pico.
If Pico is a highlight, move one São Miguel night there. That creates two full Pico days but reduces São Miguel to two. If both deserve longer, extend the trip rather than pretending the transfer days are spare sightseeing days. Alternatively, leave Faial as a shorter visit and reduce the number of hotels.
Book the arrival and departure islands first, then the inter-island legs, then accommodation. If a required flight or ferry does not appear for your dates, change the island sequence before paying for non-refundable rooms. A night at the departure base is our preference before a separately booked onward flight, although one night is not a promise that every disruption can be absorbed.
Which flight fare can an Australian visitor actually use?
The resident offers and the tourist pass are different products:
| Product | Who it is for | Decision for an ordinary Australian holidaymaker |
|---|---|---|
| Free inter-island routing | Qualifying Azores residents, equivalent residents and eligible students under the programme’s conditions | Do not include it in your budget simply because you are arriving from Lisbon or Madeira |
| Azores Fare | Passengers with tax residence in the Azores when the ticket is issued | Do not use its subsidised price as your visitor fare |
| Azores Air Pass | Non-residents holding a ticket between somewhere outside the Azores and the Azores | A genuine option for a multi-island air itinerary |
The first two eligibility rules come from SATA’s routing conditions and its Azores Fare terms. Being a student in Australia does not by itself establish eligibility for the free routing programme.
The Air Pass permits three stops longer than 24 hours, plus unlimited stops of no more than 24 hours, and includes 23 kg baggage. Sales are through SATA’s call centre or stores, and the incoming international or domestic ticket must be presented with the pass tickets at check-in. You must take the flights in the order shown on the pass tickets. Official Air Pass conditions
For example, three separate 48-hour stops use the three longer-stop allowance; adding a fourth 48-hour stop exceeds it. A 20-hour transit is treated differently, but turning a wanted island stay into an overnight transit just to fit the pass defeats the point of visiting.
There is no single public pass price on that page. Get the itinerary priced through the specified sales channel and compare that actual total with ordinary tickets for the same flights and baggage. A pass only saves money if that quoted total is below the tickets you would otherwise buy. Keep the same flights and baggage in both totals.
Keep tickets, accommodation addresses and the named ports saved offline before each move. If you need data for transport changes away from the accommodation, our Portugal SIM and eSIM comparison covers the buying decision. Check the actual plan for the islands on your route rather than assuming mainland performance applies there. The best island-hopping plan still begins by leaving enough time to enjoy the islands.
