Roaming vs eSIM

Portugal eSIMs and the real value of a tourist plan

Choose enough data and days before valuing travel perks. NOS domestic unlimited data has a separate, limited allowance for EU roaming; ride discounts have caps and may arrive later. A fixed travel-data allowance can suit modest app use without relying on partner savings.

Choose the Portugal connection before counting the discounts

A ride discount can be a useful extra with a Portugal tourist plan. Its value depends on the cap, the rides you’ll actually take and whether the code arrives in time. It belongs in the comparison, but only after you’ve checked that the connection itself fits the holiday.

The main choice here is between a fixed travel-data allowance paid in AUD and NOS Travel’s larger Portugal packages with listed data for onward countries. Choose enough days, data and sharing first, then count only the partner discounts you expect to use.

We sell the SIM Shop plans below. NOS offers and partner conditions were checked on 21 October 2026; our store prices and terms on 25 October. Euro and Australian-dollar prices are kept separate.

What the NOS Travel cards actually offer

The NOS Travel page advertises these temporary eSIM packages:

DurationEuro pricePortugal dataPublished EU data
7 days€9.9915 GBShared 15 GB allowance
15 days€19.99Advertised unlimited30 GB
30 days€34.99Advertised unlimited52 GB

NOS permits hotspot use on a phone that supports the feature. The Travel plan expires automatically, and continuing afterwards requires a new Travel SIM. Buy it when you’re ready to use it in Portugal: NOS describes immediate activation, rather than a delayed first-network start for a purchase made weeks before departure. Check ordinary calling separately if you need it; the comparison below prices the stated data and ride benefit.

The visible seven-day card and our 20 October first-step order check showed 15 GB, although another FAQ still refers to 20 GB. The seven-day offer in this comparison is therefore 15 GB; a data budget needing 18 GB doesn’t fit it.

For an illustrative 14-day visit, a seven-day allowance expires halfway through, even with data remaining. The 15-day option covers that duration, while our 30-day fixed-data options provide a different data-only arrangement. Match the stay before deciding how much unused data a package might leave.

Keep the onward-country allowance separate

NOS lists EU use plus the UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, subject to its offer conditions. That isn’t every European country, and domestic unlimited data doesn’t make the EU allowance unlimited.

Imagine a 15-day trip with an unusually heavy, assumed 40 GB used in Spain. Against the stated 30 GB EU allowance, that leaves a 10 GB shortfall. The 30-day package’s stated 52 GB would have 12 GB left against the same input, with a different purchase price. Those are allowance calculations, rather than a prediction of what you’ll use or a quote for extra charges.

For the example using 40 GB in Spain, choose the 30-day NOS allowance of those two, because its 52 GB meets the stated need while 30 GB doesn’t. For a different multi-country holiday, our Europe eSIM buying guide compares the wider route. If the stay includes the Azores, check the named islands against the actual offer; these mainland examples do not establish reception at an island property or at sea.

A percentage discount can have a much smaller cash value

NOS’s Uber benefit is capped at €2 per eligible ride, with one, three or five rides on the seven-, 15- and 30-day plans. The respective headline percentages are 35%, 25% and 20%; tolls and airport, municipal and other fees are excluded. Codes can take up to 24 hours after activation to arrive by SMS.

Here is an illustrative calculation with the inputs made visible. Suppose an eligible ride has a €20 fare and €8 of excluded fees. At 35%, the initial calculation is €7, but the €2 cap makes the discount €2. The assumed €28 total becomes €26 if the promotion applies, rather than receiving 35% off the whole amount.

Assumed eligible fareExcluded feesPercentage calculationDiscount after capAssumed payable total
€20€835% × €20 = €7€2€26

The distinction is useful before you arrive, especially if the first airport journey is the ride you hoped to discount. Build the arrival budget without depending on a code being ready immediately, then treat any eligible saving as a benefit when it is available.

At the maximum cap on every permitted ride, the theoretical Uber values are €2, €6 and €10. Moving from the 15-day to the 30-day plan costs €15 more, while the maximum additional ride benefit is €4. That leaves €11 of the upgrade cost for the extra connectivity or other benefits to justify, even in this favourable ride-discount scenario.

If you need thirty days of service, the longer plan may be worth buying for the connection itself. If you only need the shorter stay, the additional ride discounts don’t pay for the upgrade by themselves.

Give an expired voucher no assumed value

The same NOS page still advertises an Odisseias experience discount whose detailed terms give an expiry of 30 September 2026. That date has passed, so its value in this current purchase comparison is €0. Don’t subtract that expired discount from the plan cost.

We’ve valued the specified Uber benefit above rather than assuming every other partner promotion will save money. A discounted hotel only earns a place in the budget if you were going to book it; otherwise your mobile plan has somehow acquired the authority to choose the holiday.

Where our fixed-data Portugal plans fit

The SIM Shop Portugal eSIM lets you choose a fixed data allowance without having to value travel discounts:

Total data on one phoneValidityAUD price
1 GB7 daysA$5.95
3 GB30 daysA$13.95
5 GB30 daysA$17.95
10 GB30 daysA$27.95
20 GB30 daysA$44.95
50 GB30 daysA$89.95

These are data-only offers without an ordinary Portuguese number or calling allowance. They list NOS and Vodafone. The 1–20 GB choices list 5G support; the 50 GB choice does not. Validity begins on first supported-network connection, with 180 days from purchase to start. Same-area data reload is supported within active validity, without extending the original expiry. Hotspot availability depends on the phone and network.

For an illustrative five-day mainland trip using 4 GB and no ordinary calls, our 5 GB/30-day option at A$17.95 fits with 1 GB spare. NOS’s seven-day package meets the same data and duration requirements with 11 GB spare at €9.99. That is the alternative for someone buying the larger allowance and NOS’s listed sharing service, with any currency conversion added before comparing the cash costs.

For modest app data, the fixed-data options let you settle the allowance and AUD price before flying. Of the two larger NOS packages, only the thirty-day option’s 52 GB EU allowance covers the 40 GB Spain example. In either case, value the connection first and treat usable discounts as extras.

Check your phone’s compatibility and unlock status before buying from us. The Portugal setup guide covers the phone settings once the purchase is settled. Keep your first accommodation details available offline while you get connected.
