A night aboard, with an afternoon at the port
New Camellia gives you a night aboard between South Korea and Japan, with a morning arrival at Hakata, Fukuokaโs port. It can be a pleasingly unhurried way to change countries, provided the Busan afternoon belongs to the ferry too. Passenger check-in closes at 18:30, four hours before the regular sailing, and checked bags have an earlier appointment.
The regular reverse journey uses the day instead, leaving Hakata around lunchtime and reaching Busan in the evening. Start with the direction that fits the holiday you want, then choose the sleeping arrangement and onward plans around it. The cabin price is only one part of what that travel day will use.
The times below come from Camelliaโs OctoberโDecember 2026 calendar and passenger guidance, rechecked on 25 October 2026. They describe the published schedule; a sailing still needs an actual reservation and can be affected by operational changes.
Put the port visit into the itinerary
For regular services, the operator separates passenger check-in, completion of boarding, sailing and disembarkation. Keep each stage in the plan:
| Stage | Busan to Hakata | Hakata to Busan |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger check-in | 16:30โ18:30 | 10:30โ11:30 |
| Boarding completed by | 20:00 | 12:10 |
| Ship departs | 22:30 | 12:30 |
| Scheduled disembarkation | 07:30 next morning | 18:30 same day |

For a Busan departure, weโd aim for the counterโs 16:30 opening, especially with a suitcase to hand over. That is our planning recommendation, allowing time for the separate tasks. The actual passenger deadline remains 18:30.
Arriving at 21:00 might sound comfortable for a 22:30 sailing, but passenger check-in would have closed two and a half hours earlier. The 20:00 boarding-completion time also means you should already be aboard. Leave the late dinner across town for another evening.
At Hakata, Camellia directs passengers first to the ground-floor check-in counter, then to the second-floor departure gate when the announcement is made. Keep your passport with you. A checked suitcase is a good place for spare shoes and a poor place for the document the next counter needs.
Give checked luggage its own deadline
Busan accepts ordinary checked baggage 16:30โ17:30, an hour before passenger check-in closes. An 18:00 arrival works for the passenger window but is too late for a journey that depends on handing over a suitcase.
The baggage rules list KRW 8,000 up to 20 kg from Busan and ยฅ800 from Hakata, where acceptance is 10:30โ11:30. These are published charges in their own currencies, not a free allowance.
The ordinary checked-item limits are 50 kg per item, 300 kg total per person handing bags over, dimensions within 85 ร 85 ร 240 cm, and declared item value within ยฅ300,000. Those maximums donโt mean you should pack to them; they define what the service will accept.
Some additional sailings and Hakata night departures do not provide checked baggage. If you need that service, choose a regular departure with the published baggage window. Donโt make a hoped-for exception at the terminal part of the itinerary or assume an oversized checked item can simply come into the cabin.
Read the actual date on the calendar
Camelliaโs published 28 November 2026 entries show why the direction matters. Busan has no service that day. Hakata has an additional night sailing instead of its regular daytime trip, with boarding completed by 20:00, sailing at 22:00 and scheduled Busan disembarkation at 07:30 the next morning. There is no Hakata departure on 29 November.
The boarding page gives the Hakata night-special check-in window as 18:00โ19:00. Its checked-baggage restriction also belongs in that decision. These are specific entries in the operator calendar, not a rule for every Saturday or an offer of available cabins.
For a Busan departure, that Saturday requires a different date and potentially a different hotel booking. In the opposite direction, the special changes a daytime transfer into a night aboard. Put the sailing into the itinerary before committing to the surrounding accommodation, and use the calendar for the exact date rather than a general description of a daily ferry.
Choose a cabin for the night you want to have
The room guide distinguishes ordinary second-class accommodation from second-class beds, as well as first-class rooms and higher categories. If rest is part of the reason for taking the ship, the named room type matters.
For example, the first-class two-person room lists a washbasin. The higher-category single lists its own shower and toilet. A solo traveller who wants that private bathroom has a different requirement from two friends happy with shared facilities, even though they are making the same crossing. Select the room that provides the features you need when reserving.
Camellia also lists an observation deck, public bath and restaurant among its onboard facilities. If you enjoy the journey itself, the slower crossing can be part of the holiday. If you are trying to maximise city time on a short break, the hours aboard belong on the other side of the comparison. Both are reasonable ways to value the trip.
Place the hotel nights in the right cities
A regular Busan departure uses that night aboard and starts the next morning in Japan. Count a hotel saving only if you would otherwise have paid for a room. Morning disembarkation still leaves border formalities, the onward transfer and the hotelโs room-access time before you are settled in Fukuoka.
Weโd keep that arrival morning flexible, rather than attach an expensive, tightly timed onward departure to a border-clearance estimate. The regular Hakata crossing uses the daytime and leaves you needing somewhere to stay in Busan that evening. Compare the land nights alongside the ferry options so a cheaper cabin doesnโt receive an imaginary accommodation saving.
Save the booking, port directions and first accommodation address before boarding. For phone data on either side, our Japan and South Korea comparison explains shared allowances and separate country plans. Terrestrial coverage in both countries doesnโt establish a connection across the strait, so keep those essentials available offline.
With the port deadlines and arrival details already sorted, you can leave more of the crossing to the view and the thought of the next city.
