Who actually runs the networks in Japan
Japan has four mobile network operators: NTT Docomo, KDDI, which sells to consumers as au, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. They are not interchangeable, and the useful comparison depends on where you are going rather than which one is best overall.
Opensignal’s April 2026 measurements put NTT Docomo first for Coverage Experience at 9.0 out of 10, describing it as the widest geographic footprint in populated areas, with au second at 8.3. For Availability, which measures the share of time users had a mobile connection, au and NTT Docomo were both at 99.7%, while SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile were both at 99.5%.
The ranking changes on 5G. SoftBank led time with an active 5G connection at 27.4%, followed by au at 19.9%, NTT Docomo at 9.8% and Rakuten Mobile at 9.4%. SoftBank also led average download speed at 65.1 Mbps, with au at 60.7 Mbps.
What that means for a trip is that the numbers point in different directions. Peak speed can matter in a city, while breadth of coverage matters more as the population thins out. Neither measure guarantees a signal in a particular tunnel, building or remote stop, so check the route rather than treating a national winner as a promise.

If you choose the travel eSIM, set it up after landing
Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.
On iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Service, Cellular or Mobile Data, then use Add eSIM, Add Mobile Plan or scan the QR code with Camera. Select the travel line under Mobile Data. On Samsung, use Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan/Add eSIM and make it the Primary or Preferred data SIM. On Pixel, use Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM, then select it for mobile data. Android labels vary, so do not force a Samsung route onto another brand.

A last check that saves a bill surprise
Before you leave the Wi-Fi connection, open your phone’s Mobile Data/SIM screen and confirm the travel eSIM is the data line. Then look at the Australian line separately: keep its data roaming off unless you deliberately chose home-carrier roaming. Turning on a travel eSIM does not automatically make the home line safe or unsafe. The line selection is the point that decides it.
If the eSIM will not connect
- Confirm the travel eSIM appears in SIM settings and is switched on. Then confirm it, not your Australian line, is selected for mobile data.
- Check that Aeroplane Mode is off. If the order email says Data Roaming is required, follow its travel-eSIM instruction and keep Australian-line roaming off. On some Galaxy models the roaming control is not clearly per line, so stop and ask support if the travel line is not identifiable. If the email supplies an APN, copy that exact APN only.
- Wait a few minutes for local network registration, then toggle Aeroplane Mode on for about 30 seconds and off again. Restart the phone only after the line and data-selection checks.
- Do not delete the eSIM, reset mobile settings or scan the QR code again as a first fix. A deleted travel eSIM is not automatically reusable, and a network reset can remove APN settings.
