Cambodia tourist SIM or travel eSIM for Australians

Choose a Cambodian local plan for the ordinary calls or larger allowance you need. Smart Standard and Premium have different periods and calling limits; Cellcard Traveller renews manually while AO MOBILE 5G can renew at data exhaustion. A travel eSIM can suit data-only use bought in AUD before flying.

Choosing between Cambodian phone service and travel data

A Cambodian SIM can give you a local phone number, a large data allowance and included calls. A travel eSIM can be enough if your plans run through maps, messages and online bookings. Look closely at which calls are included and what happens when the data runs out.

Cellcard alone has two quite different arrangements: Traveller needs manual renewal, while AO MOBILE 5G can renew as soon as you’ve used the data. Smart Traveller has separate fifteen- and thirty-day packages. Those details matter more than choosing whichever card has the biggest gigabyte figure.

We sell the SIM Shop data plans in this comparison. The named packages and terms were checked on 25 October 2026; this isn’t a network-speed test or a completed local purchase.

Check which bundle the buying route actually supplies

Smart documents Traveller purchase at its booths in Cambodia’s international airports. Its general eSIM offering doesn’t, by itself, establish that you can buy this exact Traveller package remotely before departure.

Cellcard explicitly offers Traveller eSIM purchase through its app, without a separate eSIM issue charge through that route. The package still costs money. Its conditions require valid national ID or passport registration and limit registration to five SIM numbers per ID.

Cellcard’s Cambodia e-Arrival announcement instead names AO MOBILE 5G. If you choose that route, read the AO renewal rules below. Buying through an arrival app doesn’t turn it into the manually renewed Traveller product.

Compare the actual package, not just the provider

Smart Traveller, Cellcard Traveller and Cellcard AO MOBILE 5G are distinct products. An app purchase doesn’t automatically mean a data-only travel service either: Cellcard offers its local Traveller eSIM through its app.

Smart’s Traveller page explicitly labels its prices USD. Cellcard’s Traveller and AO MOBILE 5G are included here for their different data, calling and renewal arrangements. The price examples below keep Smart’s USD quote separate from our Australian-dollar totals.

A call to Australia isn’t included just because New Zealand is

Smart’s eligible international destination list includes New Zealand and omits Australia. Its Standard package’s 30 minutes are shared across off-network and eligible international calls, rather than thirty minutes for each destination. Premium increases that shared allowance to forty minutes.

Cellcard Traveller and AO MOBILE 5G include calls within Cellcard. They don’t provide an included all-network allowance for ringing hotels or drivers whose networks you don’t know. Smart’s off-network minutes can suit that need, up to the selected package’s shared limit.

For example, a fortnight needing 12 GB and thirty ordinary off-network Cambodian minutes fits Smart Standard’s stated allowances. Cellcard Traveller’s 15 GB/15-day package has enough data and days, but its included calls don’t cover that same requirement.

If everyone you need to reach uses the same messaging app, data may be enough. Our travel plans support app communication without providing a Cambodian phone number. That won’t replace a conventional call to a business that only answers its telephone.

Match the data allowance to your final day

The SIM Shop Cambodia eSIM gives you a fixed allowance paid in AUD before travelling. These are the current selected options for one phone:

Total dataActive validityAUD price
1 GB7 daysA$5.95
3 GB30 daysA$13.95
5 GB30 daysA$17.95
10 GB30 daysA$27.95
20 GB30 daysA$44.95

These selected offers list Cellcard and Metfone, start at first supported-network connection and give you 180 days from purchase to start. Hotspot availability depends on the phone and network, while supported same-area data reloads stay within active validity rather than adding more time to the plan.

For an eight-day visit expecting 0.8 GB, our 1 GB plan has enough data but finishes too early. The 3 GB/30-day option covers both at A$13.95. Cellcard’s 7 GB/7-day Traveller package has the same timing problem as a single purchase; its fifteen-day package lasts long enough.

For fourteen days expecting 12 GB, our 10 GB plan is too small and the 20 GB plan fits at A$44.95. Smart Standard’s 30 GB/15 days and Cellcard Traveller’s 15 GB/15 days also cover that budget. A large local allowance can be a good reason to buy locally, even if you don’t need the included calls.

For thirty days on Smart, compare Premium’s single 60 GB/30-day package at US$10 with two Standard periods at US$5 each. The latter means 30 GB in the first fifteen-day period and another 30 GB after successful renewal. It doesn’t make 60 GB available from day one. Premium also has its own forty-minute shared off-network/international allowance, rather than Standard’s thirty-minute allowance per period.

These examples use assumed consumption so you can see where the options differ. Use your own data budget and trip dates when choosing.

The two Cellcard plans behave differently when data runs out

Cellcard Traveller doesn’t auto-renew at expiry or when its data is exhausted. Continue it manually through the Cellcard app or the published package code. For the 15 GB/15-day option, the code is *1789*1500#.

Its unused data, minutes and SMS don’t carry forward. Renewing with 4 GB left doesn’t turn the next 15 GB allowance into 19 GB. Cellcard also publishes pay-as-you-go charges after the included bundles are used, so manual package renewal doesn’t mean every possible charge stops.

AO MOBILE 5G can renew with sufficient main-account balance when you use up the data or reach expiry. Exhaust a seven-day package on day three and another package charge can occur on day three.

Its rollover depends on how you continue. A qualifying renewal before expiry, automatic renewal or upgrade can carry remaining benefits into the next plan’s validity. A downgrade, expiry or migration to another plan can forfeit them. If you’ve kept 5 GB for later, check what the proposed change does to it before moving to a cheaper tier. Gifted plans have separate terms and don’t auto-renew.

Traveller suits someone who wants to control each package renewal. AO MOBILE 5G asks you to watch the account balance, data use and renewal trigger together. Neither arrangement should be inferred from the Cellcard name alone.

Smart has its own balance rules too. Its Traveller terms provide automatic renewal when enough balance is available. They also describe blocked outgoing service after insufficient balance and possible standard-rate charging where a partial top-up doesn’t cover renewal. Check the plan status through SmartNas or *1201# rather than assume any top-up restores the package.

Have the right connection ready for the trip

For data-only use, our plans let you choose the allowance and pay in AUD before flying. For ordinary local calls or substantially more data, the named local packages can do more. Choose between them on the calls, days and renewal rules you’ll use, rather than assuming one type always wins.

Before buying a travel eSIM, check your phone’s compatibility and unlock status. Save the delivery email and install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Our Cambodia setup guide covers the device steps.

If Cambodia is one stop on a longer route, use the multi-country Asia comparison before buying separate country plans. Check that your next country is included just as carefully as your last day in Cambodia.
