El Salvador to Nicaragua by boat: book the whole journey through the Gulf of Fonseca

For Golfo Travel’s shuttle, the selected appointment is immigration time, not road pickup. San Salvador’s published 02:00 pickup precedes 07:00 immigration and 08:00 boat departure. Reserve online, follow the confirmed central meeting point and pay the required cash fare; Tuesday remains a request until confirmed.

Book the whole Gulf of Fonseca transfer

A boat across the Gulf of Fonseca can form part of a transfer between El Salvador and Nicaragua, but the useful purchase is usually bigger than the crossing. You still need to reach La Unión, complete the departure formalities, arrive at Potosí and continue to León. Getting a price for the boat alone does not settle those other legs.

Golfo Travel sells a coordinated shuttle that joins them together, with different starting points in El Salvador and a reverse service from León. Its most important booking detail is easy to miss: the time you select online is the immigration-office appointment, not necessarily the time your road transfer starts. For the San Salvador service, a 7 am appointment comes after a published 2 am pickup. That is quite a difference when deciding whether to set an alarm or order breakfast.

San Salvador or La Unión: where should the booking start?

The San Salvador–León transfer is listed at US$90 per person, including the road transfer to La Unión, the boat to Potosí and the onward road transfer to a central point in León. The published pickup is 2 am, followed by immigration at 7 am and the boat departure at 8 am.

If you are already staying in La Unión, the La Unión–León option is US$70 per person. You join at the immigration office at 7 am, with the same published 8 am boat departure and the onward transfer from Potosí included. It does not include getting you from San Salvador to La Unión the previous day.

For two adults, those transfer fares are US$180 and US$140 respectively. The US$40 difference buys the included San Salvador road leg; it is not automatically a US$40 saving if choosing La Unión requires a separate journey and another hotel night. Choose the La Unión start because it fits your existing itinerary, or because you deliberately want to stay there, rather than treating it as the cheaper version of an identical trip.

Prices were checked on 21 October 2026. They are transfer fares, not a total holiday budget: border charges and meals are separate.

Keep three different times in your journey plan

Golfo Travel’s shuttle page publishes the following sequence. The exact central pickup location comes with the booking communication, and the issued confirmation takes priority over a general route description.

StageSan Salvador to LeónLeón to San Salvador
Road pickup2 am, central point in San Salvador7 am, central point in León
Immigration appointment7 am, La Unión10:15 am, Potosí
Boat departure8 am, La Unión to Potosí11 am, Potosí to La Unión
Final road legPotosí to a central point in LeónLa Unión to a central point in San Salvador

In the outward direction, the published gap between pickup and immigration is five hours; in the reverse direction it is three hours and 15 minutes. Those gaps describe the itinerary, not guaranteed driving times. They may include waiting and other handling, and neither is permission to arrive late for pickup.

The same distinction applies to the coastal starts. The operator’s FAQ lists 3 am pickup for La Libertad, El Tunco and El Zonte, and 6 am for El Cuco and Las Flores. The La Unión immigration appointment remains the later meeting point in the chain.

“Central point near your hotel” also does not mean hotel-door collection. Save the actual meeting pin, the time and the named ground carrier from the confirmation, rather than putting only your hotel address into the calendar.

Online reservation, cash payment

Golfo Travel’s current terms, version 2.5 dated 16 October 2026, say payment is in US-dollar cash before boarding the boat. Published prices include taxes, but the service does not accept online, card or bank-transfer payments. An online reservation is therefore not evidence that the fare has already been paid.

The standard published operating days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Tuesday shuttle requests are handled manually, with confirmation due no later than the calendar day after the request. Until that confirmation arrives, treat Tuesday as a request, not a secured departure around which to make another non-refundable booking.

A working WhatsApp contact is mandatory for the reservation. The operator uses it for confirmation and changes, and supplies the identity of the coordinated ground carrier before travel. Keep your established account working across the two countries. Our El Salvador data guide covers the El Salvador options; check Nicaragua inclusion separately. Save the confirmed route, people travelling and cash amount offline as well. This is one of those journeys where a message thread is part of the practical travel paperwork, rather than merely a place for holiday photos.

Pack for the small-boat leg, even when you booked a shuttle

The FAQ’s luggage allowance includes one backpack or suitcase and one carry-on bag. Listed extras are US$15 for a surfboard, US$10 for a bicycle and US$10 for another suitcase. For a couple on the San Salvador service with one extra suitcase between them, the known transfer-and-extra-bag components total US$190: two US$90 fares plus US$10. That still excludes border charges and meals.

Water shoes are required for boarding, and the operator explicitly describes wet boarding and splashes during the crossing. Protect the phone, documents and other vulnerable belongings in a waterproof bag, and wear clothing that can get wet. This is a more useful packing decision than assuming that the word “shuttle” means your luggage stays in the dry boot of a van for the entire trip.

The operator’s route instructions also require a passport and three physical passport copies. Those are its document-preparation instructions, not a complete assessment of your personal permission to enter either country. This guide compares the transfer product; it does not turn a reserved seat into immigration approval.

Leave room after León or San Salvador

The operator advertises approximately 12 hours for San Salvador–León in either direction, but the pickup times are very different: 2 am outward and 7 am back. Its separate La Unión–León listing has its own eight-hour estimate, so the duration labels should not be combined into an exact arrival calculation. Plan an arrival day, not a timed handover to another service.

Book the arrival night in the destination city and put any flight or time-critical onward journey on the following day. That is the more useful choice here than treating an estimated end time as a protected connection. The ground legs and boat are coordinated, but weather, traffic and border handling can still change the schedule.

Before setting off, put the full starting point, immigration appointment, boat direction and final central drop-off in one saved journey. WhatsApp needs internet for new messages, rather than a newly issued local number just because you crossed the border. A downloaded copy of the last confirmed messages keeps those instructions available between connections; protect the phone for the wet-boarding leg too.
