Europe eSIM setup: what to do before flying and after landing

Heading to Europe? You can buy your SIM Shop plan and save its setup email before you fly. Leave installation until you've landed and have working Wi-Fi. That keeps the phone setup in one place, with the instructions for the eSIM you're actually using.

In this guide 7 sections

The steps below take you from airport Wi-Fi to a mobile-data test, with a clear result to look for at each stage. There's also a separate reference for older Europe purchases, so an old country list doesn't get mixed up with today's offer.

Check the route before the phone settings

Our current Europe eSIM lists 32 countries. The UK, Switzerland and Turkey are included. Morocco, Serbia, Monaco and Guernsey aren't on that checked list. A nearby border or ferry stop doesn't add coverage.

For London, Paris and Rome, the UK, France and Italy are on the list. For a side trip to Monaco or Morocco, this offer won't cover that stop; you need a separately supported connection there. A 30-day plan can cover a 14-day route, but it won't cover 35 days even if you have data left. Current coverage was checked on 30 October 2026; an older Europe order may have a different list.

Before departure: make arrival easier

Use our phone compatibility checker for the model you're taking, including its sales region, then confirm it is unlocked. If it doesn't support eSIM or remains carrier-locked, stop before buying a travel eSIM for it. Save the SIM Shop email, first accommodation address and transfer details somewhere you can find them. Download useful maps and tickets while you have a connection.

Decide how you'll read the installation details on arrival. Depending on your phone and the email, that may be a supported quick-install option, a QR code shown on another screen, or the supplied manual details. Use the method for that order. Don't scan, tap quick install or enter activation details before departure.

A saved hotel address is a modest bit of preparation that feels rather clever when the airport Wi-Fi sign-in page is taking its time.

After landing: connect and check the result

  1. Join airport Wi-Fi and complete sign-in. Open a normal webpage to confirm it works. If it won't, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection.
  2. Open the setup email on the intended phone. Follow the current installation guide and the details issued with this eSIM. The installed travel profile should then appear in the phone's SIM settings.
  3. Choose that profile for mobile data. Review automatic data switching and keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you deliberately want your home carrier's service.
  4. Apply this order's roaming and APN instructions. Don't copy settings from another traveller's plan. You should be able to identify which line the instruction changes; if you can't, ask us before continuing.
  5. Test the mobile connection. Temporarily turn Wi-Fi off and load a new webpage. Restore Wi-Fi if you need more help. A Wi-Fi page loading doesn't prove the travel eSIM is connected.

The relevant device routes differ:

PhoneWhere to check the data line
iPhoneSettings, then Mobile Service, Mobile Data or Cellular as labelled on your software; choose the travel line for data. Review Allow Mobile/Cellular Data Switching.
Samsung GalaxyFollow the Samsung route in our installation guide. Check the travel line in SIM manager and its preferred data setting; menu names and roaming controls vary.
Google PixelSettings > Network & internet > SIMs; check the mobile-data choice and automatic data switching.
Other AndroidUse the maker's instructions linked from our guide or ask support. Don't assume Samsung's labels apply.

If it doesn't connect

Keep the eSIM installed. Confirm you're in an included country, the travel line is enabled and selected for data, and you've followed its issued settings. Then contact us with your order number, phone model, destination and what happened. Don't delete the profile or repeatedly scan the QR code as a first fix.

Keeping the Australian line available for texts is a separate decision. Its carrier must support overseas reception; calls, voicemail and other use can still cost money even with its data roaming off.

Already bought an older Europe plan?

Use your own order email and the historical reference below to identify the issued plan. Today's 32-country list does not rewrite an older purchase. For a new trip, use the current product's country list and terms.

Previously issued Europe range: historical reference

The following records describe the retired Europe range checked on 19 July 2026. They help identify an older purchase and are not current offers or instructions to buy. The country list and example amounts below are preserved from that record; your order email and issued plan govern your own service.

The historical 41-destination range and today's 32-country range have different coverage. Do not carry an older Morocco, Guernsey or other inclusion into a new purchase. For a new trip, use the current Europe product.
