Finland eSIM or prepaid SIM: compare the daily charge before the unlimited headline

Compare a fixed Finland data allowance with DNA’s daily prepaid charge over the whole holiday, including the days you barely use the phone.

In this guide 7 sections

On an eighteen-day Finland holiday, the phone might be busy finding the next stop one day and spend the next on hotel Wi-Fi. One total data allowance lets that use vary, while DNA’s prepaid daily charge keeps running unless you pause it. That difference matters more than how cheap the starter looks.

What DNA’s daily price means for the holiday

A local prepaid starter can look very inexpensive because some of what you pay becomes credit for later daily charges. DNA’s visitor-facing prepaid guide lists Rajaton’s physical starter at €4.90 with €5 credit. Its published daily price is €0.99 for the 4G service or €1.29 with 5G, including unlimited domestic data and normal Finnish calls and messages.

For the eighteen-day visit here, those daily charges come to €17.82 or €23.22 respectively. Those are charges against the balance, not the complete first-checkout price: the starter credit pays part and further top-up credit is needed for the rest. Don’t add the full daily total to the starter price as though its included €5 had vanished, or compare either euro figure with A$27.95 without the actual conversion and payment costs.

The Rajaton product details say the daily fee is deducted regardless of use. A quiet day on hotel Wi-Fi therefore still costs a day, and turning off mobile data isn’t the same as pausing that tariff. DNA offers a pause option for a service you’ll leave unused; use its account controls rather than assuming the flight home ends those deductions.

Price a fitting data allowance

For a traveller keeping bigger downloads on Wi-Fi, we’ve allowed 4.8GB across that eighteen-day stay, then added 25% to bring the budget to 6GB. Our Finland 10GB/30-day option covers both the amount and the period; 5GB wouldn’t be enough for this example. If the holiday continues into Estonia, that next leg needs its own coverage, through a suitable regional plan or a separate purchase.

Your holiday may look different, which is where our trip planner helps. Give it Finland, your travel dates, how you’ll use the phone and whether you’ll share data, and it will estimate an amount and show available options. It already adds a buffer, so there’s no need to add the same spare margin again.

Which service does the job?

What you needA fitting type of serviceThe decision to settle
Internet for apps on an unlocked, compatible phoneFinland eSIMThe example fits 10GB for 30 days at A$27.95. Include every data-needed country.
Ordinary calls or SMS on the Australian numberYour Australian carrier’s eligible roaming serviceUse the service and eligibility for your own mobile plan. Keeping its Data Roaming off does not settle call or voicemail charges.
A callable local numberA visitor-eligible local service explicitly including voice or SMSA data-only eSIM does not meet that number requirement. Establish the supplied calling number and visitor purchase requirements before depending on it.

A paid roaming comparison for this example

If an eligible Telstra Upfront customer triggers 18 separate Zone 2 Day Pass periods, the A$10 charge totals A$180. The travel-data example above is A$27.95. Day Pass also includes the eligible ordinary calls and SMS, plus 2GB in each charged 24-hour period. The travel eSIM gives you one total data allowance for apps, without those ordinary calls or texts.

Telstra lists the countries in this example in Zone 2. Only use this calculation for an eligible service and those charged periods. A trip lasting 18 calendar days doesn’t automatically produce exactly 18 charges, and another carrier’s rate can differ. If your home plan already includes suitable roaming at no added cost, compare that before buying another service. Telstra’s eligibility, countries and triggers.

If a local number is the deciding feature

For that local calling option, buy the named physical Rajaton starter through a DNA shop, R-kioski or another retailer listed in DNA’s prepaid guide, then keep enough balance for the intended days. The normal Finnish calls and texts are useful when a local number is the job; calls from Finland to Australia follow separate international rates. DNA also advertises prepaid eSIMs, but the physical starter is the purchase priced here, rather than an assumed identical online eSIM checkout.

An Estonia leg needs its own roaming allowance check: unlimited domestic Finnish data isn’t automatically unlimited data there. For our Finland-only offer, use a separate suitable plan or an explicitly inclusive regional option, as with the route check above.

Hotspot and setup are separate checks

Planning to share data with a laptop? Ask us to check the exact plan, phone and laptop, including any separate limit on shared data, before buying. Tell us what you need to do and roughly how much you’ll transfer. Enough data for the phone doesn’t guarantee that sharing will work, so keep another suitable connection available for an essential task until those details are confirmed.

Buy before the flight, save the setup email and install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Then select the travel line for data, follow its roaming/APN instructions and test with Wi-Fi off. The installation guide takes you through the phone controls.

Prices and daily charges

DNA’s linked prices and retailer guidance were checked on 1 November 2026. The eighteen-day figures show the daily charges; the available top-up amounts and any payment conversion costs will affect what you actually pay.
