The table is a shortlist of selected offers, not every provider or tariff. Calls have destination and service-type exclusions. Ordinary incoming calls consume the minute allowance on minute-based packs; a WhatsApp call uses data instead.
Domestic network branding doesn't tell you where roaming works. Open the provider's linked destination list and match every stop where you need mobile service, including a layover. If a destination isn't listed for that pack, choose another data arrangement there rather than assuming a neighbouring country's inclusion extends across the border.
A seven-day Japan trip
Suppose you budget 0.8GB a day plus 1GB spare: 7 × 0.8 + 1 = 6.6GB. That's a stated example, not an average traveller's measured use.
Our Japan 10GB/30-day fixed plan is A$19.95, leaving 3.4GB against that budget. It is data only. Seven Aussie Broadband A$5 charged blocks cost A$35, with eligible ordinary calls and texts and 5GB in each block. Boost's A$40 fourteen-day pack has 7GB and 60 minutes/60 SMS. One Kogan A$45 weekly pack has only 5GB, so it doesn't cover the assumed 6.6GB without another purchase.
Choose the travel data plan if app calls suit you and the allowance fits. Choose your existing carrier's pack if ordinary calls on your Australian number are worth its extra price. A generous daily bucket is useful when you actually need it; unused daily data doesn't become a shared holiday balance.
Short trips spread over a year
felix and amaysim's long expiry can be useful for several small trips. For example, four eligible trips using 0.5GB each need 2GB altogether. amaysim's A$25/2GB pack fits that assumed use within 365 days and includes 50 minutes/30 SMS. A single heavier trip can change the calculation completely.
Both brands describe carrying unused inclusions into a new qualifying pack under its new expiry. Keep the underlying service eligible and the number active. On felix, cancelling the eligible subscription also cancels the roaming add-on.
Two timing details worth catching before the airport
Belong can start on a layover. Its pack activates when the service connects to an eligible network, then runs for fifteen consecutive days. Belong recommends flight mode until the intended destination if you don't want an eligible layover to start it. A new pack also forfeits the previous pack's remaining inclusions, so don't buy early merely to queue the next fortnight.
Kogan vouchers and Boost purchases aren't the same. You can save Kogan vouchers before departure and activate them in sequence. Boost's countdown starts at purchase. Read the Kogan sequence or Boost timeline before buying for a longer trip.
Bank texts and data need separate decisions
Belong and felix publish incoming-SMS access without a purchased pack on eligible services and destinations. Tangerine and More state that incoming standard SMS don't count towards their SMS allowance, but their pages also say a travel pack is needed for overseas service. Don't turn that into a universal pack-free receiving promise.
Ask your provider: “Can this exact service receive a bank SMS in [country] without a roaming pack, and can voicemail or calls still create a charge?” If it cannot confirm receiving access, enrol in your bank's available alternative approval method before departure. For travel data, buy and save the email before flying. Install after landing on airport Wi-Fi once sign-in is complete and a webpage loads, or use hotel Wi-Fi. Select the travel line for data, keep Australian-line data roaming off and disable automatic data switching.
