Where the holiday is based
A day in Gibraltar during a Spanish holiday is different from a Gibraltar-based stay with a short outing into Spain. Gibtelecom’s tourist data terms make that distinction: the Spanish roaming is for short personal visits while based in Gibraltar, rather than a plan for spending a fortnight in Málaga.
Start with where you’ll stay and how long the Gibraltar part lasts. A small dedicated eSIM can complement separately covered Spanish travel. Gibtelecom’s larger local tourist allowance can suit a Gibraltar base within a fortnight. For longer visits or a shared regional package, validity and the actual country list decide the next comparison.
The selected prices, terms and country lists below were checked on 25 October 2026. Local prices are pounds sterling, our prices are Australian dollars, and the named Orange Travel offer is in euros.
The local tourist service is data-only too
Gibtelecom’s Tourist Data SIM comes as a physical SIM or eSIM:
| Local package | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 15 GB | 14 days | £10 |
| 30 GB | 14 days | £20 |
It doesn’t include ordinary voice or SMS, apart from the emergency-call exception described in the operator’s terms. A local operator’s product isn’t automatically a normal local calling service.
Clause seven limits Spanish use to short personal visits while based in Gibraltar. If you are based in Spain, don’t count this as the data service for the entire holiday. For a Gibraltar-based ten-day visit needing an estimated 12 GB, the 15 GB package fits with 3 GB above the estimate, subject to its local purchase route.
Its fourteen-day clock starts on insertion for the physical SIM, or when the QR is scanned and the eSIM activated. Once the allowance or time ends, it deactivates. The existing tourist SIM or eSIM cannot be topped up, extended or renewed; continuing requires another tourist product.
A smaller Gibraltar allowance can fit a Spanish side trip
Our Gibraltar eSIM provides fixed data without ordinary calls or SMS:
| SIM Shop total data | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | A$5.24 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | A$15.70 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | A$21.82 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | A$27.92 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | A$84.95 |
The plans list GibTel as the network. Their technology labels differ: the smaller four choices list 4G/5G capability and the 20 GB option lists 4G. Those labels aren’t measurements of the connection you will get, and a larger allowance doesn’t establish a faster service.
Suppose your holiday needs 9 GB in Spain and 500 MB during a Gibraltar day trip. This combination covers the stated amounts:
| Destination | Selected plan | Price | Remaining against the estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | 10 GB / 30 days | A$27.95 | 1 GB |
| Gibraltar | 1 GB / 7 days | A$5.24 | About 500 MB |
| Total | Two separate country plans | A$33.19 | Separate balances |
The Spanish use must fit its thirty days and the Gibraltar use its seven days. It isn’t an 11 GB pool to spend in either country. Choose the appropriate data line on each side and disable automatic mobile-data switching.
This is a useful fit for the small Gibraltar plan: you are covering the actual side trip without depending on the local product’s Gibraltar-base condition. The Spain buying guide covers the separate Spanish purchase if that part of the trip has different needs.
A longer Gibraltar stay needs more time, not necessarily more data
For 21 days needing an estimated 8 GB in Gibraltar, our 10 GB / thirty-day plan at A$27.92 leaves 2 GB and enough time. Gibtelecom’s 30 GB tourist package contains much more data but still ends after fourteen days. It doesn’t provide one uninterrupted twenty-one-day package.
Our allowances start on first network connection, with a 180-day first-use window and no daily reset. Eligible same-area reloads stay within active validity; don’t assume they restart the clock. If you intend to share, hotspot availability depends on the network and device.
The local operator lists retail outlets including its John Mackintosh Square shop, Netgear, Music Corner and an airport seller. Those are locations, rather than confirmed stock or hours for your arrival. Its eSIM QR is supplied on the pack and needs an internet connection for installation. An online SIM Shop purchase is another route if you want that purchase arranged before travelling.
Some Europe plans include Gibraltar; ours currently doesn’t
The current SIM Shop Europe regional range lists 32 destinations without Gibraltar. It doesn’t replace the dedicated Gibraltar plan.
Orange Travel’s Europe offer names both Spain and Gibraltar. Its selected 20GB/fourteen-day package with calls and texts is €24.99, so it’s another option when you want a shared allowance for a trip within that fortnight. Use the exact package’s countries and inclusions, rather than assuming every Europe plan is equivalent. Our Europe buying guide covers that wider choice.
If you choose our dedicated Gibraltar eSIM for an overland visit, save the order email before departure and install the profile after arrival using a steady trusted Wi-Fi connection there. Keep the instructions accessible and Australian-line data roaming off.
Choose the small dedicated plan for a small separately covered side trip, a suitable local package for a Gibraltar base, or an expressly inclusive regional offer for the combined route. Where you’re staying is the detail that makes those recommendations different.
