Roaming vs eSIM

Hong Kong eSIM, roaming or local SIM: choose for the route and the calls

Follow the Hong Kong stay into Macao or China, with shared data, a local calling number and the Australian service kept as distinct choices.

For Hong Kong maps, messages, bookings and app calls, a data eSIM can cover the internet part of the trip. If you need an ordinary Hong Kong number or local calling service, a local operator's tourist plan deserves a look. If keeping ordinary calls on your Australian number is the priority, compare your carrier's roaming offer.

Decide the route first. Hong Kong-only data isn't automatically data for Macao or China, even when the next stop is an easy day trip.

Start with a Hong Kong-only allowance

Our Hong Kong eSIM includes these current fixed-data options:

AllowanceValidityPrice
1GB7 daysA$5.95
3GB30 daysA$13.95
5GB30 daysA$17.95
10GB30 daysA$27.95

For example, six days at an assumed 0.4GB a day comes to 2.4GB, or 3GB with 25% added once. The 3GB plan fits that example. For your own trip, choose dates, phone activities and any sharing in the trip planner, then compare its estimate with the allowance. Large video uploads or laptop sessions need room in that budget too.

These offers supply data, without a local number, ordinary call minutes or an SMS bundle. App calling uses the data connection; dialling an ordinary phone number is a separate service. The 1GB to 10GB offers in the table have a 60-day start window, with running validity beginning at the first supported network connection.

Adding Macao: shared data or two plans?

Suppose you've budgeted 4GB for Hong Kong and 0.5GB for one day in Macao, after any buffer you want to include. Here are two ways to cover that 4.5GB route:

ChoiceData allocationTotal price
China, Hong Kong and Macao regional 5GB5GB shared across the included three destinations, 30 daysA$34.95
Hong Kong 5GB plus Macao 1GBSeparate 5GB/30-day and 1GB/7-day allowancesA$23.90

The separate combination is A$11.05 less for that budget. It also means installing and selecting a second profile for Macao. The regional option keeps one shared allowance, which is useful if the amount you'll use in each place is less predictable.

If the next stop is Shenzhen or elsewhere in China, the two single-destination plans above don't cover it. The three-destination regional option does include China. Make that decision before you buy, rather than asking the Hong Kong allowance to develop a new passport halfway through the holiday.

When a local tourist plan is a better fit

csl's 5G Discover Hong Kong Tourist offering includes Hong Kong local voice. That's a useful difference if you need ordinary local calls. It isn't the same benefit as a data eSIM supporting WhatsApp.

csl's seven-day table currently lists HK$88 for 50GB, split into 20GB shared by Hong Kong and Macao plus 30GB for Hong Kong only. The same page's default-pass terms still describe 12GB. With those figures in conflict, get written confirmation of the package you're buying. Ask: “How much of this allowance can I use in Macao, when does it expire, and which ordinary calls are included?” Keep the package confirmation. If Macao data can't be confirmed, the regional or separate-data choices above have explicit coverage for the example.

Follow the local operator's real-name registration requirements through its own process. Don't send identity documents to us to register another operator's SIM.

When to keep Australian roaming

Roaming may be worthwhile if your usual number needs to make or receive ordinary calls, or your employer covers the charge. Use your actual carrier account to compare the price and included destinations. Ask whether receiving calls, sending SMS, voicemail or background data triggers a charge; turning Australian-SIM data roaming off doesn't answer all four.

Our bank SMS guide explains how keeping a number active differs from choosing a mobile-data line. If you only need app communication, select the travel eSIM for data and keep automatic data switching off.

Buy and save the email before departure. Install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, or hotel/another steady trusted Wi-Fi connection if the airport connection won't work. Use our installation guide for the exact phone steps.
