Use the right set of Netflix settings
There are two controls to distinguish: playback settings for a Netflix profile, and mobile-data settings in the app. Netflix’s mobile Automatic estimate is about four hours per GB; Save Data is about six. Those are not the same labels or rates as the profile’s Low, Medium and High options. Supported picture quality also depends on your device, title and subscription.
| Profile quality | Published use per hour | Two-hour film | Ten and a half hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Up to 0.3GB | Up to 0.6GB | Up to 3.15GB |
| Medium | Up to 0.7GB | Up to 1.4GB | Up to 7.35GB |
| High, standard definition | Up to 1GB | Up to 2GB | Up to 10.5GB |
| High, HD | Up to 3GB | Up to 6GB | Up to 31.5GB |
| High, 4K | Up to 7GB | Up to 14GB | Up to 73.5GB |
The last column represents 45 minutes a day for 14 days. We multiplied Netflix’s published upper figures by time; we did not measure these programmes ourselves. Actual use can be lower. These totals belong to one device, so two people watching different shows need separate rows in the budget.
A fortnight example that changes the plan decision
One 45-minute episode each evening adds up to 10.5 hours over a fortnight. Netflix’s approximate mobile Save Data rate puts that viewing around 1.75GB. At the profile’s published HD maximum it could reach 31.5GB. Those are different quality settings, which is why choosing the setting before travel matters so much.
45 minutes × 14 nights ÷ 60 = 10.5 viewing hours.
At roughly six hours per GB: 10.5 ÷ 6 = about 1.75GB.
Add your own estimate for maps, messages, browsing and uploads. If those other jobs need 3GB and you choose a 1GB reserve, the Save Data example totals 5.75GB. A 5GB plan is 0.75GB short of that full budget. For a Japan fortnight, our selected 10GB/30-day plan at A$19.95 covers the stated 5.75GB with 4.25GB spare; it has sixty days from purchase to start. Downloading those episodes on Wi-Fi instead removes the assumed 1.75GB of mobile viewing, leaving the example’s 4GB for other use and reserve.
Make the choice in the app before you travel
In the Netflix app, use My Netflix → the profile name at the top → App Settings → Video Playback → Cellular Data Usage to review the mobile choice. Turn Automatic off if you need to select a different option. Netflix also says pending downloads can prevent changing that control; finish or cancel them before retrying. Wi-Fi Only prevents cellular streaming. Also review download settings. For the separate profile control in a browser, open Account → Profiles → choose the profile → Playback settings, then select the desired quality. Mobile streaming does not exceed a lower profile usage limit merely because the app is set higher.
Do a small check after changing the setting: record the phone’s Netflix mobile-data counter, watch a representative episode and compare afterwards. A menu choice is useful, but your own counter shows whether the travel budget is behaving as expected. Check the plan’s remaining allowance as well because provider accounting can differ.
A tablet on a hotspot can spend the phone’s data
The tablet sees a Wi-Fi connection to your phone. The phone may be supplying that connection through your eSIM. Calling it Wi-Fi does not make it free or remove a hotspot cap. Set the tablet’s playback and downloads deliberately, and check the exact eSIM’s sharing terms before relying on it.
Some Japan unlimited plans limit how much data you can share across the trip; others have different sharing rules. Check the exact plan for the devices you want to connect. The unlimited label alone does not answer a family’s streaming needs. Our family eSIM guide compares separate phone plans with sharing one connection.
Download the episodes while the connection is yours to use
Netflix supports downloads for eligible titles and devices, but not every programme can be saved. Open the download section, finish the files on Wi-Fi and test an episode before departure. Check any expiry or renewal message before a long offline leg. A saved title in your list is not proof that its video file is downloaded.
If you mainly want maps and messages out of the hotel, downloads may let you choose a smaller total-data plan. If streaming on mobile is a core part of the trip, compare the full budget with current destination plans and their validity, speed and fair-use terms. More gigabytes cannot fix a coverage gap or an unavailable streaming title.
Buy a SIM Shop eSIM before flying and keep the setup email handy. Install after landing on reliable Wi-Fi. Prepare the shows in advance; leave the travel eSIM installation for arrival.
