Buying eSIMs for a family: separate plans or shared data?

An adult navigating separately needs a different arrangement from a child’s tablet used beside a parent. A teenager catching another train needs a way to open a ticket and message without the host phone nearby. A Wi-Fi-only tablet cannot install a mobile eSIM. Downloaded films may cover most of its needs. A shared connection also disappears if the host phone leaves or runs out of battery.

Check each exact handset and regional model through our phone compatibility checker, including its unlock status. Similar-looking phones do not necessarily support the same setup.

A data-only travel eSIM does not receive carrier SMS sent to an Australian number or include ordinary calls. A compatible dual-SIM phone may keep the Australian line available, subject to its provider’s overseas support, account requirements and charges. Download music and programmes before the trip and review cloud-backup settings. A tablet connected to a phone’s hotspot may treat it as Wi-Fi, while the phone is spending its mobile allowance. Use the Netflix budget or YouTube worksheet for that part of the plan.

Here is a seven-day Japan example using our own offers checked on 30 October 2026. All four people have compatible phones. The fixed-data options remain valid for 30 days once started, so a seven-day trip fits their validity. The prices do not establish that every person needs the same allowance.

The two 20GB plans and four 10GB plans both add up to 40GB, but they buy different independence. The sharing option is A$19.90 cheaper only if its practical limits suit the group. Unused data on one phone cannot simply be transferred to another eSIM. A cheap arrangement that leaves someone unable to open their booking is not a useful saving.

Then compare the actual Japan options, or choose your family’s destination. All Japan offers quoted here have 60-day start windows. Check dates, allowance and sharing terms on the selected offers before buying; choose a basket that meets the way your family will travel.

Our cheaper Japan seven-day 10Mbps unlimited offer is A$24.95, with 6GB of hotspot data for the whole seven-day validity. If three connected devices each use an assumed 500MB a day, they need 10.5GB across the week. That exceeds the hotspot allowance even though the host phone’s on-device data is unlimited.

The full-speed seven-day Japan offer has different sharing terms. For the assumed 10.5GB sharing budget, the seven-day full-speed offer has no separate hotspot allowance; the 6GB sharing offer is 4.5GB short. Neither label promises a particular number of connected devices, constant speed or all-day phone battery life. If your host phone cannot reliably keep all three devices connected, give each independently travelling person their own compatible-phone plan rather than relying on one hotspot. Check the exact phone and plan before relying on it as the family’s only connection. The fixed-data plans above also make hotspot availability conditional on the local network and device.

You might buy independent data for the adults and older children, then use downloads and occasional permitted sharing for a younger child’s tablet. Or give a light user a smaller plan instead of making every allowance identical. For two adults who separate during the day, two modest plans can be more useful than one large shared plan.

1. Assign each purchased plan to one compatible phone and save its setup email securely. Keep activation details out of broad group chats.
2. Save hotel addresses, transfers and a meeting point offline. Agree how to reconnect if data is unavailable; our travelling-together reminder can help.
3. Buy before departure. After landing, join airport Wi-Fi and complete its sign-in page. Check a webpage opens; otherwise use hotel Wi-Fi or another trusted steady connection.
4. Use the installation guide for one phone at a time. Check the intended traveller, label the travel line and select it for mobile data.
5. Follow that order’s roaming/APN instructions. Keep Australian-line data roaming and automatic data switching off unless deliberately using a carrier service.
6. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and test each phone’s data before separating. One working phone does not prove the others work. Test any intended sharing while reliable Wi-Fi is still available as a fallback.

Do not delete a working profile to tidy the phones, or assume a purchased code can move between handsets.

Can everyone use one eSIM?

One profile belongs on its intended phone. Others may share its hotspot if the exact plan, phone and network support it. Someone travelling separately needs another suitable connection.

Should every person get the same size plan?

Only if their dates and needs match. Budget each person’s streaming, maps and sharing separately, and check validity for their whole trip.

What if a profile is installed on the wrong phone?

Stop and contact support with the order reference and phone models. Do not delete it or repeatedly scan the QR code. Moving or reinstalling it is not automatically supported.
