The short answer

For most trips to Europe, start at 1 to 2 GB per week for light use, 3 to 5 GB for regular daily use, or 7 GB and up if you stream, upload or hotspot. Then compare that estimate with the live plan's data type and validity. If the only current option is a daily high-speed plan, compare the allowance per day, not against a total-data bucket.

This page describes a previously sold Europe 35 Areas range. If you already bought that plan, use your order email and the historical product information below. For a new trip, use the current Europe buying guide and check every stop against the current product list. The new Europe plan has 32 listed countries and is not a like-for-like replacement for every older range. Read the current Europe buying guide

Start with your actual days in Europe

For Europe, picture the first hour before choosing a plan: transfer details, directions, a booking and the person waiting for an update. Then check each extra stop by name instead of assuming nearby coverage. Start with the habits you will really have on the trip, then give yourself enough headroom for the moments when maps, photos and bookings all happen at once. The ranges below are planning benchmarks, not a promise of what any app will use on your particular phone.

If you are at the point of choosing a plan, our best eSIM for Europe guide compares the current options and the trade-offs that matter for Australians.

Historical plan examples from the original check

The currently available options include total-data plans for this route. Match the total allowance to your trip length rather than buying the largest bucket by reflex.

The plan examples below were checked on 19 July 2026. Prices, availability and inclusions can change, so use the product page you can buy today as the final word. Your SIM Shop order email has the exact instructions for the plan issued to you.

Keep data from disappearing in the background

  • Download offline maps and the first accommodation details while still on Wi-Fi.
  • Set photo and cloud-backup apps to Wi-Fi only for the trip.
  • Turn off automatic app updates and high-quality video autoplay on mobile data.
  • If you need to share data with a laptop or another phone, treat hotspot as a separate requirement and check the selected plan’s current note rather than assuming it is included.

Set the phone up only after landing

Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.

When you install, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you intentionally use home-carrier roaming. On current iPhone software, the data-line path starts at Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; other iPhones may say Cellular or Mobile Data. The full iPhone, Samsung, Pixel and other-Android routes are in the eSIM install guide.

When the estimate is not enough

Do not assume every eSIM can be topped up or extended. Check the current order details and eSIM status first. If you need help choosing before purchase, email hello@thesimshop.com.au with your destinations, dates and whether you will use hotspot or video. It is much easier to choose a sensible allowance while you still have a coffee and stable Wi-Fi.
