The amount depends on your trip length and what you'll do online. Maps, transport, messages and bookings are one kind of use; video uploads, streaming and a laptop can change the budget considerably.
Start with the planner above. Enter your travel dates, choose the closest usage style and include any hotspot requirement. It gives you an approximate data range and shows available plans. The estimate already includes a planning buffer, so you don't need to add the same buffer again.
Put a number on your trip
If you have a comparable recent mobile-data total, use it as another starting point. Here's how that works for a week or a fortnight:
| Recent use | Trip | Calculation with 25% buffer | Current fitting fixed allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6GB in 30 days | 7 days | 6 ÷ 30 × 7 × 1.25 = 1.75GB | 3GB/30 days, A$9.95 |
| 12GB in 30 days | 14 days | 12 ÷ 30 × 14 × 1.25 = 7GB | 10GB/30 days, A$16.95 |
Add use that isn't represented in that history. If your home total mostly comes from messaging between Wi-Fi connections, it won't automatically cover a new habit of uploading long videos from the beach.
You can also make an explicit budget. Allowing 0.5GB a day for 14 days plus 2GB of extra uploads gives 9GB; adding 25% gives 11.25GB. The 10GB plan is short for that assumption, while 20GB covers it. Replace the daily amount and extra uploads with the use you expect on your own trip.
Current Thailand fixed-data choices
These examples are available on our Thailand eSIM page:
| Total allowance | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1GB | 7 days | A$4.95 |
| 3GB | 30 days | A$9.95 |
| 5GB | 30 days | A$12.95 |
| 10GB | 30 days | A$16.95 |
| 20GB | 30 days | A$29.95 |
Fixed data is one pool. Use more on the day you travel to the next stop and less on a quiet day; there isn't a new allowance every morning. Data stops when the total is used. These fixed plans are non-reloadable, so don't assume you can extend the installed plan through a top-up.
What the Thailand Unlimited option actually means
The current seven-day Unlimited offer is A$24.95. Its high-speed allowance is 100GB across the whole validity period, at up to 10Mbps. After that, data continues at 384kbps. The 100GB doesn't reset every day.
For 14 days, the current Unlimited offer is A$52.95. Compare the correct duration: the cheaper seven-day option won't cover the second week just because its headline allowance is larger.
For the 7GB example, we'd start with the A$16.95 fixed option. For heavier phone use over seven days, the A$24.95 offer can be worth the extra cost if its speed ceiling and whole-plan threshold suit you. Unlimited is the name on the offer, not permission to stop reading the useful bit underneath it.
If you need hotspot for work
We have not confirmed whether the Thailand unlimited plan can share data with a laptop, what device/network limits may apply, or how shared data counts towards its 100GB. The fact that the shop adds no separate sharing limit does not answer those questions.
Before buying for a laptop, ask us: “Can you confirm hotspot support, sharing limits and how tethered use is counted for this exact Thailand plan on my phone?” Include the plan and the task, such as work calls or a specific upload. If it can't be confirmed, arrange another connection for the work rather than buying this plan on an assumption.
For all the trade-offs, including ordinary calls and local offers, see our Thailand buying guide.
Before your flight
You have 60 days after buying the Thailand plans discussed here to start using them. Their days begin when the eSIM first connects to a supported mobile network. Save the email before departure and install after landing on Wi-Fi that lets you sign in and open a normal webpage. If airport Wi-Fi fails, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady, trusted connection.
Save essential addresses and bookings offline before travelling. Your phone can be wonderfully useful without making the first taxi ride a test of every setting at once.
