A week in London is a different budget from a fortnight away
A short city visit and a longer trip can use the same apps but need different total allowances. Save tickets, accommodation and useful maps on Wi-Fi, then budget the data you still expect to use while out.
Use the existing data planner above: enter your arrival and departure dates, choose the closest travel style and tell it whether you need hotspot. It estimates a data range and shows an available matching option when it can. A no-fit result is a reason to compare the offers below or email hello@thesimshop.com.au with the dates and essential requirements. The tool does not prove coverage at a particular address or create an ordinary phone number.
Match the countries before the allowance
The selected UK-only offers cover the UK. The Republic of Ireland is a separate country allowance; Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man also need their own explicit inclusion. For an onward France or Italy leg, compare the current Europe country list rather than assuming a UK plan follows you across the Channel.
Two UK budgets you can actually calculate
Take a week using an assumed 0.5GB a day, with 1GB spare: the budget is 4.5GB. For a fortnight at 0.6GB a day plus 1.5GB spare, it rises to 9.9GB. Here’s how those two holidays compare before we choose the allowance.
| Assumed trip | Calculation | Budget |
|---|---|---|
| A week | 7 × 0.5GB + 1GB reserve | 4.5GB |
| A fortnight | 14 × 0.6GB + 1.5GB reserve | 9.9GB |
These are explicit planning inputs, not average app-consumption statistics. The reserve is already included; don’t add the same spare amount twice. Video calls, uploads or laptop use need to be part of the daily input.
Our 5GB/30-day offer at A$14.95 leaves 0.5GB against the weekly example. It is 4.9GB short of the fortnight budget. The 10GB/30-day offer at A$16.95 covers the stated 9.9GB with 0.1GB beyond the included 1.5GB reserve, and costs only A$2 more than 5GB. Choose 10GB for that example, rather than trying to make the smaller plan last by its thirty-day label.
To choose your own daily input, read per-app mobile usage over a known period on the phone. On iPhone, Current Period requires a known reset date; on Android, select the relevant data-usage period. Downloading maps and media on Wi-Fi reduces future mobile use, but a month-long counter is not evidence of one week’s needs.
Current fixed-data options
| Total data | Days once started | Current price | Start using within |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1GB total | 7 days | A$4.95 | 180 days |
| 3GB total | 30 days | A$11.95 | 180 days |
| 5GB total | 30 days | A$14.95 | 180 days |
| 10GB total | 30 days | A$16.95 | 180 days |
| 20GB total | 30 days | A$34.95 | 180 days |
These selected offers provide one total allowance, not a daily refill. The plan’s days begin when the eSIM first connects to a mobile network covered by the plan. The start window is how long you can wait after buying before that first use. Buy within that window; installing before departure is not a way to extend it.
Keep data from disappearing in the background
- Download offline maps and the first accommodation details while still on Wi-Fi.
- Set photo and cloud-backup apps to Wi-Fi only for the trip.
- Turn off automatic app updates and high-quality video autoplay on mobile data.
- If you need to share data with a laptop or another phone, treat hotspot as a separate requirement and check the selected plan’s current note rather than assuming it is included.
When the estimate is not enough
Do not assume every eSIM can be topped up or extended. Check the current order details and eSIM status first. If you need help choosing before purchase, email hello@thesimshop.com.au with your destinations, dates and whether you will use hotspot or video. It is much easier to choose a sensible allowance while you still have a coffee and stable Wi-Fi.
Set the phone up only after landing
Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.
When you install, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you intentionally use home-carrier roaming. On current iPhone software, the data-line path starts at Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; other iPhones may say Cellular or Mobile Data. The full iPhone, Samsung, Pixel and other-Android routes are in the eSIM install guide.
