Then check each extra stop by name instead of assuming nearby coverage. This is a decision about friction as much as price: a retail stop, a home-carrier bill and a data-only travel line solve different problems.

Vodafone and Three are one company now
Vodafone and Three completed their merger on 31 May 2025, forming VodafoneThree. Vodafone then bought CK Hutchison’s remaining 49% stake for £4.3 billion in 2026 and took full ownership. That leaves three mobile network groups in the UK: VodafoneThree, EE, which is owned by BT, and Virgin Media O2. Vodafone and Three still remain separate consumer brands.
A guide that treats Vodafone and Three as unrelated companies is out of date. A guide that treats their networks as completely identical also goes too far. VodafoneThree described its May 2026 national network-sharing milestone as the first phase of integration, not the end of it.
That first phase is substantial. VodafoneThree says up to 28.6 million Vodafone and Three customers can now connect automatically to the best available coverage across more than 10,000 sites, while the wider £11 billion build continues over ten years.
The practical read for a short trip is to check the current coverage map for any place or rail route that matters to you. Cost, setup and whether you want to keep your Australian number reachable still decide most city trips. A specific rural or coastal route can still make the network relevant.

The route-specific deciding question
For a trip confined to the UK, a single-destination travel eSIM can be a clean data option. If the route grows, compare a regional plan rather than stretching a one-country option.
If you choose the travel eSIM, set it up after landing
Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.
On iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Service, Cellular or Mobile Data, then use Add eSIM, Add Mobile Plan or scan the QR code with Camera. Select the travel line under Mobile Data. On Samsung, use Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan/Add eSIM and make it the Primary or Preferred data SIM. On Pixel, use Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM, then select it for mobile data. Android labels vary, so do not force a Samsung route onto another brand.

A last check that saves a bill surprise
Before you leave the Wi-Fi connection, open your phone’s Mobile Data/SIM screen and confirm the travel eSIM is the data line. Then look at the Australian line separately: keep its data roaming off unless you deliberately chose home-carrier roaming. Turning on a travel eSIM does not automatically make the home line safe or unsafe. The line selection is the point that decides it.
If the eSIM will not connect
- Confirm the travel eSIM appears in SIM settings and is switched on. Then confirm it, not your Australian line, is selected for mobile data.
- Check that Aeroplane Mode is off. If the order email says Data Roaming is required, follow its travel-eSIM instruction and keep Australian-line roaming off. On some Galaxy models the roaming control is not clearly per line, so stop and ask support if the travel line is not identifiable. If the email supplies an APN, copy that exact APN only.
- Wait a few minutes for local network registration, then toggle Aeroplane Mode on for about 30 seconds and off again. Restart the phone only after the line and data-selection checks.
- Do not delete the eSIM, reset mobile settings or scan the QR code again as a first fix. A deleted travel eSIM is not automatically reusable, and a network reset can remove APN settings.
