Roaming vs eSIM

North America 3 Areas eSIM, roaming or local SIM: choose for this trip

For maps, bookings and messages in your apps, compare the travel-data options below. If you need a local phone number, choose a service that includes one; to keep using your Australian number for ordinary calls, check roaming on your existing mobile account.

Start with the phone service you need

Suppose the itinerary is USA for 7 days, Canada for 7 days, Mexico for 4 days. A shared eSIM can save a profile change when its country list and single running period fit, while separate country purchases give each leg its own allowance. Put those two versions of the actual trip beside each other before choosing by the size of the headline bucket.

We sell the SIM Shop offers used here. The budget assumes 0.3GB per day plus 1GB of uploads, with 25% added once for headroom: 6.4GB × 1.25 = 8GB. These are hypothetical planning inputs, not measured averages, and they can be replaced with the way you actually expect to use the phone.

Price the allowance and the last usable day together

Option checkedAllowance and periodTotal AUD priceWhat it covers here
North America 3 Areas eSIM10GB / 30 daysA$64.95One pool for the stated 18-day route
USA eSIM5GB / 30 daysA$14.957 days in USA, calculated budget about 3.05GB
Canada eSIM5GB / 30 daysA$19.957 days in Canada, calculated budget about 3.05GB
Mexico eSIM3GB / 30 daysA$13.954 days in Mexico, calculated budget about 1.92GB

The separate country basket totals A$48.85. Each selected allowance covers that leg’s amount and period, but unused data cannot move from one profile to the next. The shared offer costs A$64.95, A$16.10 more than the separate basket.

For this example, we would start with the separate purchases for the lower checked price, unless avoiding a profile change is worth the difference to you. Both versions still have their own network, start-window and hotspot conditions; a price comparison is not a reception test.

The country-list detail that changes this choice

The selected North America regional offer names all three example countries: USA, Canada and Mexico. A USA–Canada-only purchase would not establish the Mexico leg.

A local number and your usual number solve different jobs

Need a local business to ring or text you? Choose a local service that includes a phone number and the calls or SMS you need. More travel data won’t add a number, and a WhatsApp call is different from an ordinary call to that number.

To use your Australian number overseas, open your mobile account’s roaming section and look up each country on your route. Check whether your exact mobile plan includes roaming or qualifies for a pass, what starts a charge, how much data and calling it includes, and what happens when that runs out. If the account doesn’t confirm that the advertised pass applies, leave roaming off while you ask your carrier.

An included allowance that already meets the trip can add no extra data-plan spend. Where an eligible pass charges per 24-hour period, count the charged periods rather than assuming they match calendar days; extra use can trigger another charge under that pass’s terms. The Australian roaming comparison explains the current carrier distinctions, while the bank-code guide covers receiving messages on the usual number. Turning Data Roaming off alone does not prevent every call or voicemail charge.

Choose for the way you’ll use your phone

For app data within the stated budget, the checked travel offers provide a priced choice. For a local number, choose a local service with explicit voice or SMS inclusions; compare its full SIM/eSIM charge, valid days and identity requirements before treating a large data headline as better value. Without a matched local quote, we do not label either route the cheapest.

For your own trip, enter the countries, dates, usual phone activities and any data sharing into the trip planner. It gives you an estimated amount and available options to compare, including their covered countries and days. Its estimate already includes a buffer, so you don’t need to add another 25%.

Set up the plan you bought

The fixed-data plans in these examples start when they first connect to a supported network. The time allowed to start after buying is separate from the days of service you get once connected. Sharing data with a laptop depends on the selected plan, network and phone; adding data may not extend the expiry either. If laptop access is essential, send us the plan name, phone and laptop models, and what you need to upload or download before buying, so we can check that combination.

Buy before flying and save the email, then install after landing on airport Wi-Fi that can open a normal webpage, or another steady trusted connection if it cannot. Select the travel line for data, keep Australian-line data roaming and automatic switching off unless deliberately using the home carrier, and follow that issued order’s roaming and APN settings.
