Optus Prepaid Roaming vs eSIM: Which Fits Your Trip?

These options are published on Optus’s prepaid roaming page and in its Prepaid Add-ons CIS. They apply to eligible Zone 1 destinations; confirm your destination in the live list.

These are additional charges, excluding any underlying recharge. Don’t confuse the A$5 prepaid 1GB add-on with a postpaid daily-roaming offer.

Optus names Flex Plus, Flex Plus Casual, Flex Plus Traveller, Prepaid Epic Data and Prepaid Epic Value. An active unexpired recharge is required when purchasing, except for Flex Plus Traveller. The service must be activated in Australia and roaming enabled for use overseas.

Calling inclusions have limits, and incoming calls can consume included minutes. The included standard outgoing calls are to Australia or another Zone 1 destination; incoming calls from any destination use minutes while you’re in Zone 1. Premium, special, toll-free, video, satellite and maritime calls are excluded. The one-day add-on’s stated expiry is 11.59pm on the day following purchase; use the actual displayed expiry instead of assuming every “day” means a rolling 24 hours.

A short Japan stop needing 1GB

Optus prepaid is A$5 with its stated call/SMS inclusions and expiry. Our selected Japan 1GB/7-day fixed offer is A$4.95. A five-cent difference is tiny. If the Optus duration fits and you value using your existing service, roaming may be the easier option.

A Bali fortnight needing 5GB

Optus’s 5GB/14-day add-on is A$25. Our selected Indonesia 5GB/30-day fixed offer is A$11.95, a difference of A$13.05 for the stated data budget. The Optus offer also includes calls and SMS. Indonesia is listed in Zone 1. Choose the Indonesia data plan for the stated 5GB app-based trip; choose Optus if its 50 standard minutes and 50 SMS are useful enough to justify A$13.05 more. The expiry displayed at purchase must still cover your return-day use.

A NZ fortnight needing 10GB

Optus’s 10GB/28-day add-on is A$45. Our selected NZ 10GB/30-day fixed offer is A$23.95, a difference of A$21.05. New Zealand is listed in Zone 1. Choose the NZ data plan for that 10GB data-only budget; the Optus add-on earns its extra cost when you also need its 100 standard minutes and 100 SMS.

These examples assume you already have an eligible Optus service, sufficient expiry and destination coverage. They compare selected offers, not every possible discount, recharge or SIM package.

See the data-only option for your destination: compare Japan eSIM allowances, compare Bali and Indonesia eSIM allowances, or compare New Zealand eSIM allowances. These plans do not include ordinary calls or SMS. Compare them with the Optus add-on that covers your trip, including its eligibility and recharge requirements.

The 186-day option can be worth checking if several trips fall within its running period. For a worked budget, three eligible trips using 4GB each would need 12GB, leaving 3GB from a 15GB allowance if no other data is used. Check that the final trip ends before the actual expiry.

For three separate 4GB trips to Japan, Indonesia and New Zealand, our current 5GB/30-day fixed plans are A$14.95, A$11.95 and A$14.95: A$41.85 altogether. Each has its own running validity and start-by window, so buy each near its trip. The A$75 Optus option costs A$33.15 more in this example, but includes ordinary calls and SMS and keeps one pool available across those trips within 186 days.

A data-only travel eSIM doesn’t give you an ordinary local number or replace carrier calls and SMS. If you keep the Optus line available for bank codes, confirm its current receiving and charging rules and prevent unwanted mobile-data use on that line. Follow the bank SMS and dual-SIM guide instead of assuming “data roaming off” disables every chargeable service.

If you choose a travel eSIM, check the phone first, buy before departure and save the setup email. Install after landing: finish the airport Wi-Fi sign-in, open a webpage to confirm it works, then follow the setup email. If the connection drops, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. For a prepaid add-on, use Optus’s account instructions and confirm the actual purchase-time expiry.
