What a year of Passport Club actually looks like

The Passport Club rules explain the thresholds, but a worked example makes the moving parts easier to follow. The five orders below each contain one qualifying travel eSIM, with illustrative paid order values rather than quotes for particular plans; they show how orders, spend and destination stamps can move at different speeds.

So here is a year of fairly ordinary travel, order by order.

Within Passport Club, there is no points currency or redemption balance to convert. Qualifying orders build order count, eligible spend and unique destinations at the same time, and you move up through whichever published condition you meet first. SIM Shop Credit is a separate programme, so these ranks and rewards should not be read as a description of every account benefit.

The current rewards are self-service: Landing Rescue and Signal Boost sit in Passport Club in My Account, while Choose-Your-Drop is used at checkout. You review and use the eligible reward through its own route rather than waiting for Travel Desk approval.

It is over the A$25 minimum, so it counts once the eSIM is ready to use.

That is one qualifying order, which is all Gate Mate needs. A Landing Rescue Pass lands in your account.

It is worth understanding that reward before you need it. Landing Rescue is a complimentary emergency data pass of up to 1GB for eligible destinations. In My Account, you choose a destination, review the exact data and validity, then confirm that one pass will be used. That starts automatic fulfilment of a new eSIM, with no manual approval step.

If redemption fails before we’ve asked the provider to issue the eSIM, the pass returns to your account. If that request may already be under way, leave the same redemption in progress while we check it; trying again could create a second eSIM. You need working internet to redeem the pass and receive the setup details, and automatic issue can still be delayed. Save the instructions once they arrive.

Better to file that away now than discover it in an arrivals hall.

Two qualifying orders, A$64 of eligible spend and two unique destinations.

Two orders is what Side Quester needs. The spend route would not have reached it yet because A$75 is the threshold and the running spend is A$64. You only need one of the conditions.

Side Quester gives you a Signal Boost, and this one works differently from what many people expect.

It gives up to A$15 off a bigger fixed-data plan for a destination you have already bought for. You choose the previous eSIM in your account, Passport Club finds the next fixed-data plan up for that destination, and it goes into your cart with the discount applied. You check out normally and the new eSIM arrives the usual way.

The reward supplies a new eSIM, rather than changing the one already installed on your phone, and daily or day-pass plans aren’t included. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing the eligible plan.

If none of your previous fixed-data eSIMs has an eligible next tier, the Signal Boost stays in your account. Support does not manually approve a different plan.

Three orders, A$94 spent and now three different destinations.

This is where it gets busy. Three unique destinations puts you at Border Hopper, which comes with a Choose-Your-Drop. Hitting three unique destinations also awards an extra Landing Rescue Pass and an extra Signal Boost.

One A$30 order can therefore put three rewards in the account at once. Rank rewards are issued the first time you reach each level. When one order crosses several rank or destination milestones together, you receive every reward you had not already earned.

Choose-Your-Drop gives up to A$10 off one eligible travel eSIM order of A$25 or more, with the exact amount shown before payment. You use it in one go, and it works on its own rather than alongside coupons, Mates Rates, SIM Shop Credit or a member price.

You apply it yourself at checkout. If the cart does not meet the published conditions, the reward stays in your account for another eligible order.

Four orders and A$134 spent. Still three unique destinations.

Here is the mechanic that catches people out. Stamps count unique destinations, so going back to Vietnam does not add a second Vietnam stamp.

It is not wasted. The order still builds the qualifying order total and eligible spend, which are two separate routes up. The trip also stays in Travel Passport, which keeps the full history rather than just the places that were new.

No new rank this time. Data Diplomat needs five qualifying orders or A$300 in eligible spend.

Five qualifying orders, A$184 spent and four unique destinations.

Five orders reaches Data Diplomat, which awards two more Signal Boosts.

A$184 across five qualifying orders in one year leaves you at Data Diplomat with one Choose-Your-Drop, two Landing Rescue Passes and four Signal Boosts.

The four Signal Boosts come from Side Quester, the three-destination milestone and the two awarded at Data Diplomat.

None of the rewards expire. They stay in the account until used, unless the order that earned one is later refunded, cancelled, disputed or found to be ineligible.

Unique destinations move the stamp count. Repeat trips still build your order total and eligible spend, and they still go in Travel Passport, but a destination only stamps once.

You need one condition, not all of them. Orders, spend, unique destinations, regional or multi-country eSIM stamps and a qualifying group order are alternative routes to rank.

The window rolls. Progress is measured over the last 365 days. Activity can age out and move a rank down, with a 30-day protection period before demotion.

Fully refunded, cancelled and failed orders do not count. A partial refund reduces the eligible value of that order, which can affect whether it still clears the A$25 minimum or a rank threshold.
