Compare the day you actually had
A travel day is rarely comparable with a workday at home. You may spend hours navigating outside, taking photos, translating menus and checking transport. Start with Settings and Battery on iPhone, or the battery-usage screen for your Android model. Look at the time period and the largest apps before changing mobile settings.
Apple’s battery guidance distinguishes on-screen use, background activity and mobile coverage. A weak-signal environment can use more battery. Those clues are more useful than concluding that a newly installed eSIM must be faulty because it appeared on the same day.
Make one useful change
- Long screen time: reduce brightness when practical and lock the phone between checks. Save the route before leaving reliable internet.
- Photo or file activity: pause large uploads until you have power and a suitable connection.
- Hotspot use: disconnect unused devices and end the session when finished. Check what the connected laptop is downloading.
- Weak coverage: move to a more open or better-covered location where practical. Do not repeatedly run speed tests while searching for a signal.
On supported iPhones, Apple’s 5G Auto setting can use LTE when 5G offers little practical benefit, while forcing 5G On can use more power. Change only the intended line and keep a record of the original setting. Availability depends on the device and plan.
Keep a small observation log
Record the starting battery level, duration, main task, signal condition and whether hotspot was active. Repeat a similar short session after one change. A 20-minute indoor email session cannot fairly be compared with an hour of outdoor navigation and video recording.
This is a way to investigate your phone, not a laboratory battery test. We do not claim a measured percentage saving for switching settings or disabling a second SIM.
Before turning off the Australian line
Consider whether you need bank SMS, incoming calls or a number-linked messaging service. Turning off a line can change those services. Check your verification options first. Disabling data roaming on the home line and turning the entire line off are different actions.
Low Power Mode or the Android battery-saver equivalent may help preserve charge, but can delay background work. Download tickets and essential details while connected so you can access them without depending on a fresh sync.
When to investigate the device
If unusual drain continues during light use in good coverage, inspect battery health and follow the manufacturer’s support guidance. If the problem is instead a poor connection, use our slow-data checks. Keep the eSIM installed while investigating; deleting it is not a battery diagnostic.
Sources and checks
