The first useful control costs nothing: keep data roaming off on the Australian line when you aren't deliberately using its overseas data. Calls, outgoing texts and voicemail still need a separate decision.
Three different outcomes

Those are service-specific examples. A smaller provider using Telstra or Optus domestically doesn't automatically inherit that network's retail roaming rules.
Pay-as-you-go can spend much faster than a data pack
Vodafone publishes A$1 per MB for postpaid pay-as-you-go roaming. At that rate, 100MB costs A$100. That is the quoted tariff applied to a stated amount, not a measured background-data event.
Its January 2026 roaming terms separately publish A$51.20 per MB for prepaid pay-as-you-go data, charged in 1KB increments. Prepaid data charges are drawn under its credit arrangements. Don't assume a few dollars of credit buys a useful holiday allowance or that a prepaid label prevents all pay-per-use exposure.
If the account doesn't establish which tariff applies, leave its data roaming off and use Wi-Fi or a separately arranged travel connection until the carrier confirms it.
An incoming bank text is different from a call
Receiving an ordinary SMS alone doesn't trigger Telstra Day Pass or Optus Daily Roaming under their published rules. Vodafone also states that receiving an ordinary text isn't an A$5 trigger. This doesn't establish the same rule for every prepaid product or every smaller provider.
Incoming calls and some voicemail arrangements can have roaming consequences even when Australian-line data roaming is off. Ask the carrier: “Can this plan receive SMS in [country] without a pack, and what happens to unanswered calls and voicemail?” If you don't need its ordinary calls or texts, turning that line off is a clearer choice than leaving it enabled on an unconfirmed tariff.

Check the product in the account
In My Telstra, open the mobile service and its international-roaming details. In My Optus, use Services, the service and Add-ons. In My Vodafone, open International roaming and Roaming settings.
Read the exact plan name, destination, product and remaining allowance. Ask the carrier whether turning off a daily pass leaves pay-as-you-go access enabled; disabling the pass isn't necessarily disabling the whole roaming service. If you want the carrier to block roaming, request that explicitly and establish which calls and SMS will then be unavailable.
Compare a concrete trip instead of buying in a panic
For an assumed seven-day Japan trip using 0.8GB daily plus 1GB spare, you need 6.6GB. Our selected Japan 10GB/30-day data plan at A$19.95 covers that amount with 3.4GB left. Seven eligible A$5 daily charges cost A$35 and may include ordinary calls and texts under the carrier's terms.
Choose the data plan if app calls meet your needs and that allowance fits. Keep carrier roaming if ordinary calls on the Australian number justify its cost. You can also use Wi-Fi where practical; arriving without buying from our shop isn't itself a mistake.
Set the phone before relying on it
Buy and save our setup email before departure. After landing, complete airport Wi-Fi sign-in and open a webpage, then install. Use hotel Wi-Fi if the connection isn't steady. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data, keep Australian-line data roaming off and disable automatic switching. Apply the travel line's own roaming/APN instructions.
Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a small webpage to prove travel data works. If it doesn't, leave the profile installed and use our connection help. Don't fix an uncertain travel connection by blindly enabling Australian data roaming.
