Flying to Rodrigues after Mauritius: what happens to your baggage allowance?

For the stated Air Mauritius services, separate Rodrigues tickets can mean 15kg checked luggage and 5kg in the cabin. Compare the fare plus any excess baggage with the Australia-origin itinerary’s allowance, rather than carrying the international limit onto every flight.

Price the Rodrigues flights with the packed bags

Adding Rodrigues to a Mauritius holiday can change what fits in your suitcase budget, even when the suitcase itself stays exactly the same. A separate island ticket can have a 15 kg checked allowance, while Air Mauritius publishes one checked piece up to 23 kg for its Australia-origin economy itinerary to Mauritius or Rodrigues. The smaller flight also has a 5 kg cabin limit. Your international carry-on does not get a diplomatic exemption because it has already travelled a long way.

Price the island flights with the bags you will actually carry, including any clothing moved out of the heavier international cabin bag. If you can travel with 15 kg checked and 5 kg in the cabin, the lower island allowance need not cost you anything extra. If you are taking 20 kg or more, include the Rodrigues excess charge before deciding that separate tickets are cheaper.

The rules and charges below were reviewed on 21 October 2026 and apply to the stated Air Mauritius services, rather than every airline that might appear in an Australian booking.

The international allowance and the island allowance are different

Air Mauritius’ current checked-baggage tables apply to tickets issued from 1 April 2026. The economy row for an itinerary originating in Australia and travelling to Mauritius or Rodrigues lists one piece up to 23 kg. Its Mauritius-to-Rodrigues row lists 15 kg. The airline also states that the allowance on your ticket is the one assigned to your booking. Air Mauritius checked-baggage rules.

This makes including Rodrigues in the original Australia-origin itinerary worth pricing before you buy the international flights. Compare that offer with an Australia–Mauritius ticket plus a separate Mauritius–Rodrigues return. Put the baggage allowance beside each fare, rather than assuming that choosing the same airline automatically carries the international baggage allowance across to a later, separately bought island flight.

If another airline is part of the booking, Air Mauritius’s general table won’t settle the whole journey’s baggage allowance. Its rules also account for which airline controls the baggage terms and for stopovers followed by a different airline. Use the allowance displayed for your actual itinerary, rather than replacing it with the generic Australia row.

The return deserves its own line in your comparison. The Mauritius/Rodrigues-origin table lists two pieces up to 23 kg each for Australia, but that is not a reason to assume your Australia-origin return ticket gains an extra bag halfway through the holiday. Read the allowance attached to each booked sector, including Rodrigues back to Mauritius.

Even with 23 kg checked, pack a 5 kg cabin bag for Rodrigues

Air Mauritius normally allows one economy cabin bag up to 7 kg, but expressly reduces that to one bag up to 5 kg for Rodrigues. The combined length, width and height must not exceed 115 cm. A higher checked allowance does not increase this cabin limit. Air Mauritius cabin-baggage rules.

Weigh the cabin bag before leaving Australia if Rodrigues is already part of the trip. Otherwise, a comfortable international packing arrangement can become an awkward repacking exercise in Mauritius. Moving a jumper and other permitted clothing into the suitcase may solve it, but only if the checked bag still fits its own limit. Do not treat every cabin item as suitable for the hold: medicines, for example, belong in the cabin under the airline’s guidance.

A traveller with 20 kg checked and 7 kg in the cabin could move 2 kg of suitable clothing into the suitcase, producing 22 kg checked and 5 kg in the cabin. That fits a ticket carrying a one-piece, 23 kg checked allowance. On a separate 15 kg island ticket, however, the same packing arrangement has 7 kg of checked excess.

What the extra weight actually costs

For travel between Mauritius and Rodrigues on a ticket showing the 15 kg weight allowance, Air Mauritius publishes MUR 250 per excess kilogram, with a maximum of 23 kg per bag. This is a specific island-flight rate, not the airline’s international extra-piece price. Air Mauritius additional-baggage charges.

These examples assume bags within the standard combined length, width and height of 158 cm, the 15 kg checked allowance on both island sectors, and the same packed weight in each direction:

Packing arrangement for RodriguesChecked excessOne-way excess chargeReturn excess charge
15 kg checked, 5 kg cabinNoneMUR 0MUR 0
20 kg checked, 5 kg cabin5 kgMUR 1,250MUR 2,500
22 kg checked, 5 kg cabin7 kgMUR 1,750MUR 3,500

These are calculated baggage charges, not flight prices. They exclude any separate oversized or special-equipment charge, and the return calculation changes if you come back with a different weight. Souvenirs do have an unfortunate habit of ignoring the spreadsheet.

For two adults each travelling with 20 kg checked and 5 kg cabin bags, the same assumptions produce MUR 5,000 in return excess charges between them. That is the amount to add to their separate island fares when comparing those tickets with an itinerary that actually includes enough baggage.

There is also a hard limit to the “just move it into the suitcase” solution. Starting with a 22 kg suitcase and a 7 kg cabin bag, moving 2 kg creates a 24 kg suitcase. That exceeds the island rule’s 23 kg maximum per bag. Air Mauritius explicitly excludes Mauritius–Rodrigues travel from its general overweight-bag charge for bags above 23 kg. Do not budget that international overweight fee as a way to take one 24 kg suitcase on the island flight. Reduce what you take so each bag meets the applicable limit.

Which booking arrangement makes sense?

Choose the separate island ticket on its actual fare merits if you can pack within 15 kg checked and 5 kg cabin. In that situation, a larger international allowance has no baggage saving to offer for the Rodrigues sectors. The flight dates and total fare can drive the decision.

Price Rodrigues within the original itinerary first if you intend to take a heavier suitcase. A displayed 23 kg allowance can avoid the island excess in the examples above, but it still needs to be worth the difference in airfare. The useful comparison is the complete fare against the separate fares plus their necessary baggage charges, with both island directions included.

If the international flights are already bought, weigh the island bags and use the relevant row above before adding extras. Air Mauritius offers additional baggage through its booking flow, Manage Booking, online check-in and airport channels. Keeping the receipt with the island ticket makes the baggage allowance you paid for easy to find, although paying for baggage does not change the cabin limit or the maximum bag weight.

Save those tickets and receipts before heading to the airport, so retrieving the allowance does not depend on data. For booking access and accommodation messages on Rodrigues, check named-island inclusion in our Mauritius SIM and eSIM comparison. A Mauritius product title alone does not establish Rodrigues service.

Pack to the smallest allowance your chosen itinerary actually gives you. The most useful luggage upgrade is sometimes taking less to Rodrigues, rather than paying to bring every possible outfit along for the ride.
