Sweden eSIM without BankID: registration isn’t the whole purchase

Comviq permits foreign-ID prepaid registration but separately requires Mobile BankID for its documented eSIM route. Compare a physical local SIM, Lyca’s published photo-ID service route, or a data-only travel eSIM according to your phone format and calling needs.

Two steps that look like one

Registering a Swedish prepaid SIM with your passport and ordering its eSIM can be two separate jobs. Comviq publishes a foreign-ID registration route, but its eSIM instructions require Mobile BankID. Passing the first step doesn’t give an Australian visitor access to the second.

That difference matters most for an eSIM-only phone. Before comparing a local tariff with a travel-data plan, check whether you can obtain the right SIM format. A Swedish number is useful when ordinary local calls matter; for maps, bookings and internet messages, a data-only purchase may be enough.

The selected offers and guidance below were checked on 25 October 2026. Local prices are Swedish kronor, shown as SEK. Our prices are Australian dollars.

Check the eSIM requirement separately from identification

Comviq’s registration guidance directs people without a Swedish personal number to online Veriff registration or retailers including Pressbyrån, 7-Eleven and Circle K. It asks for valid foreign identification. Its separate eSIM instructions require Mobile BankID to order, activate and reveal the QR code.

What you needRelevant Comviq condition
Register prepaid service as a visitorA published foreign-ID route exists
Obtain the documented eSIMMobile BankID is required separately
Use a physical SIM insteadYour phone must have a suitable slot, and the service still needs registration

Without BankID, we wouldn’t rely on Comviq’s documented eSIM route for arrival data. A physical prepaid SIM may remain an option for a visitor with a compatible phone. The operator makes the final identification decision; we haven’t submitted an Australian passport for approval.

What Comviq Fastpris includes

The Fastpris tariff from 1 September 2026 lists these examples:

Data allowancePriceValidityEU/EEA data
1 GBSEK597 days1 GB
5 GBSEK15930 days5 GB
20 GBSEK24930 days20 GB
250 GBSEK41930 days50 GB

The monthly products include 20,000 domestic minutes and 20,000 SMS/MMS, with premium services and SMS purchases such as parking excluded. The 5 GB tier has no international calling allowance. Don’t count calls from Sweden to Australia as included just because domestic calls are covered.

First traffic on the SIM must take place in Sweden. For a Sweden-first trip that may fit; for a trip beginning elsewhere, don’t assume you can start the service in the first country you visit.

The roaming allowance needs checking alongside the total. A traveller using 10 GB in Sweden and 55 GB elsewhere in the EU/EEA exceeds the 250 GB plan’s 50 GB roaming allocation by 5 GB, despite using only 65 GB overall. Another traveller using 10 GB in Sweden and 15 GB elsewhere exceeds the 20 GB plan’s total by 5 GB. Its 20 GB roaming figure isn’t an extra pool to add on top.

For a wider itinerary, use the Europe eSIM buying guide to compare actual country lists and allowances. A large Swedish headline doesn’t settle that separate decision.

Lyca describes a photo-ID route for its local service

Lyca’s selected 4 GB Fast Pris offer shows SEK85 for 30 days, with an eSIM choice. Its registration FAQ permits BankID or valid photo ID. If you need a local number on an eSIM-only phone, this is a published alternative worth checking, rather than applying Comviq’s BankID rule to every provider.

We haven’t completed the passport registration or payment. Compare the selected SEK85 one-month offer, not the SEK68 monthly rate in the page title for a different 12-month purchase. Its terms list 4 GB EU roaming and a separate 2 GB UK/Switzerland cap, with initial activation in Sweden.

That distinction preserves a useful choice: if the local offer meets your calling needs and you can complete its registration, there is no reason to buy extra travel data merely because the process was unfamiliar.

When a travel-data eSIM does the job

Our Sweden eSIM is for data without a Swedish telephone number, ordinary calls or SMS. It lists 3, Telenor and Telia as networks and starts validity on first supported network connection.

SIM Shop total dataValidityPrice
1 GB7 daysA$5.95
3 GB30 daysA$13.95
5 GB30 daysA$17.95
10 GB30 daysA$27.95
20 GB30 daysA$44.95

For nine days with an estimated 2 GB requirement, we’d choose 3 GB for A$13.95, leaving 1 GB above the estimate. The 1 GB option misses both the amount and the dates. If those nine days need 4 GB, another A$4 buys the 5 GB plan and leaves 1 GB spare. Each is one total allowance, with no daily reset.

Two people who need independent connections could each choose 3 GB, costing A$27.90 together. One 5 GB plan costs A$17.95 but provides less combined data and keeps both people dependent on the host phone being nearby if sharing works. Hotspot availability depends on the device and network. The cheaper single plan is a different arrangement, especially when you want to head out separately.

Know what continues after the bundle

When there’s no active plan, Comviq says the account moves to Bas and uses SEK1.50 of credit each day to keep the number active. That isn’t extra included data. With Lyca, review auto-renewal in the account and cancel it before expiry if you don’t want another paid period.

Our fixed data purchase suits an app-based visit when you don’t need that continuing Swedish line. Check compatibility before ordering, particularly if your phone can only use eSIM. Keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you deliberately need that service.

Start with the service and SIM format you can actually use. Once those fit, the allowance and price become meaningful comparisons, rather than a good-looking tariff behind a BankID screen you can’t get past.
