List countries, work locations, expected video/upload/hotspot use and the consequence of a connection failure. Choose around the actual trip and phone. Start with three plain questions: where do you need data, what must the Australian line keep doing, and how much setup friction are you happy to accept after landing. The best answer is the one that makes those trade-offs obvious before money or time is spent.
A quick tie-breaker
When two options still look plausible, choose the one that removes the biggest real trip risk. A compatible travel eSIM is usually the easier route when you want data for maps, bookings and messages without a shop visit. A physical SIM, pocket Wi-Fi or home-carrier roaming can be the better fit when a local service, multiple devices, a home number or a specific carrier arrangement matters more than setup simplicity.
Keep the setup timing simple
Buy before travel, then add the eSIM after landing. Use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Save the setup email before you fly, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave.
A few assumptions to leave behind
- Do not assume speeds, uptime, static IPs, hotspot access or VPN compatibility.
- Daily reduced-speed data may not suit every work task.
