What matters before you choose

Thailand is the standout: thirty days of unlimited is A$85.95 against A$89.95 for our 50GB plan. It costs less and gives you twice the high-speed data. Both selected plans have a 60-day start window, so the main trade-off is the unlimited plan’s 10Mbps speed ceiling.

Indonesia has a supplier-backed no-threshold term at A$113.95 for thirty days. That can suit heavy on-device use. We set no separate shop hotspot cap, but supplier support is unconfirmed; choose a confirmed sharing plan if work depends on it.

Japan full-speed is A$120.95 for thirty-one days and has no separate tethering allowance in the supplier terms. We have no published connected-device count.

What actually uses data when you are working

Video-call data use depends on quality, direction and the app. A working month with frequent calls and cloud sync can therefore use much more than a sightseeing trip, but do not treat one hourly estimate as a guarantee.

Cloud sync is the quiet one. A photo library or a work drive syncing over mobile data will move more in a week than a month of browsing.

That is why a fifty gigabyte bucket that sounds enormous on a two-week holiday stops sounding enormous on a working month, and why the no-threshold plans in Indonesia and Japan are worth the premium for this specific way of travelling and not for most others.

Buy it about a month before you fly

Long trips get booked furthest ahead, so this is worth a diary note. If you are organising a month in Bali six months out, some fixed-data plans have longer start windows and suit that timeline. Come back for the unlimited plan closer to departure and you get the full benefit of it.

Tethering a laptop

Working away usually means a laptop on the phone’s hotspot.

For Japan we can answer that precisely, and the answer is a good one: full-speed unlimited has no separate tethering allowance at all, so the laptop draws on the same unlimited data your phone does. It is the plan to choose over the cheaper 10Mbps option, which carries a sharing allowance near 0.86GB a day.

For Indonesia and Thailand, we set no separate shop cap on personal hotspot use. Supplier support, network limits and connected-device limits are unconfirmed; Thailand metering against its 100GB is unconfirmed too. If laptop tethering is essential, choose a plan with confirmed sharing terms or ask us before buying.

Keep a second way to connect

If you have a call you cannot miss, do not make an untested mobile connection your only option. Check the selected plan’s hotspot terms, test your work tools when you arrive and keep a usable second connection in mind. A large allowance does not guarantee upload speed, access to a work VPN or a stable call from every location.

How much data does working remotely actually use?
