Working away can give your phone two very different jobs. It might handle a few messages and bookings on its own, then supply the laptop through an afternoon of calls or file transfers. The unlimited label on the phone won’t tell you how much of that second job the plan allows.
Start with a working day you can account for, and keep laptop use separate from the phone’s. Our trip planner uses dates, phone-use choices and sharing needs for an estimate; your own recorded work use can help refine it. Include days off too, and don’t add the same spare margin again if the estimate already includes one.
A working month with room for busier days
For an illustrative budget, allow 1.5GB for laptop work and 0.5GB for the phone on each of twenty working days. That totals 40GB, with a chosen 25% margin taking it to 50GB before any additional days-off use. Those are assigned amounts, rather than an average for a meeting app or job.
The laptop alone accounts for 30GB before the spare. Add its 25% margin and it needs 37.5GB of sharing. A plan allowing 30GB to be shared would therefore leave this example short, even if the phone could use unlimited data directly.
Follow that laptop requirement through the Japan range
The local KDDI plans cover 11–21, 26 and 31 days in Japan. Their whole-trip sharing allowance is the number of plan days minus one, in GB: 13GB for the 14-day offer and 30GB for the 31-day offer. Once that allowance is used, shared data may slow to around 128kbps.
The 31-day option’s 30GB sharing allowance doesn’t cover the example’s 37.5GB laptop budget. Unlimited phone data doesn’t fill the difference, so this working pattern needs another suitable arrangement. The phone data itself is subject to heavy-use review over a rolling three-day period and may slow to around 1Mbps, without a published fixed GB trigger.
Keep its calendar with the purchase too. The first date of KDDI data use is Day 1, and service ends at 11:59pm Japan time on the last day. There is an issued start-by date; an unused plan may start automatically when it passes. Your exact phone must support LTE Band 18 or 26, and the KDDI line needs Data Roaming OFF. The shorter Japan plans have their own settings and terms.
Thailand and Indonesia answer a different part of the budget
Thailand’s thirty-day unlimited offer costs A$85.95, against A$89.95 for a thirty-day 50GB fixed offer. It gives 100GB across the trip at up to 10Mbps, then 384kbps: A$4 less with more data before the reduction, but a different speed ceiling.
Indonesia’s thirty-day unlimited is A$113.95, against A$49.95 for 50GB valid thirty days. It has no total data cap or extra slowdown for heavy use, with actual speed still dependent on the network. If the fixed 50GB covers your stay, that is A$64 you could keep.
Neither selected unlimited offer has confirmed supplier support and device/network limits for laptop sharing. For Thailand, how shared data counts against the 100GB is also unconfirmed. That means their phone allowances can be compared here, but they aren’t confirmed essential work connections for this laptop budget.
Test the work, not just a signal bar
Before relying on a plan for work, get the exact sharing requirement confirmed, then test the real meeting, upload or VPN connection after arrival. Have an alternative you know you can use, such as a suitable connection at the accommodation. A second eSIM can use the same underlying network, so it isn’t automatically an independent backup.
The selected Thailand and Indonesia unlimited offers and shorter Japan unlimited families have 60-day start windows. The longer KDDI range instead follows its issued deadline. Buy within the exact offer’s timing, save its email before departure and install after landing on working, steady Wi-Fi.
For the working month above, the useful result is knowing that the laptop needs more than the quoted 31-day KDDI sharing allowance, before the first meeting depends on it. The data amount, permission to share and a tested backup each have a job; having one doesn’t stand in for the others.
