In this guide 6 sections
Four locations can be involved
- Your physical location: where you and the phone actually are.
- The local mobile network: the carrier whose signal the phone uses.
- The internet exit: where the data connection reaches the wider internet.
- The website’s estimate: the country a service associates with the public IP address.
A website may also use account region, language settings, cookies or device location permission. An unfamiliar currency on a shop page is not enough to identify which of those signals caused it.
What it can affect
You might see another country’s search results or currency, or find that an app blocks the connection for location or security reasons. Airalo documents this as a possible problem too. That doesn’t confirm how a particular SIM Shop plan or bank will behave; use the exact error and service when asking for help.
A longer network route can add delay, but an IP-country result is not a speed test. Congestion, signal, server location and the app itself also matter. A plan listing a local carrier does not promise a local IP address, local internet exit or a particular latency.
Choose for a critical application before buying
If a work VPN is essential, ask your IT team: “Will this login accept a roaming connection whose internet exit may be outside my destination, and what approved fallback should I use?” For a bank or streaming account, ask that service about the same restriction. Give us the exact destination and selected plan if you need its routing checked before buying; don’t assume another offer uses the same route. Read the VPN and public Wi-Fi guide for the security trade-offs and the slow-data guide for connection diagnosis.
Check one thing at a time
- Record the exact app or website error and whether other sites load normally.
- Check whether a personal VPN or proxy is active. Compare with it off only if that is appropriate; keep required work security in place and ask IT.
- Compare the same service on trusted Wi-Fi. Record the result rather than repeatedly logging in.
- Check the app’s account region and location permission if relevant. Do not change your actual account country or identity information to bypass a restriction.
- Ask the service owner whether it restricts roaming or foreign IP addresses.
A maps app accurately locating your phone while a website shows another country is not contradictory: those services may be using different location signals.
What to send the Travel Desk
Send your order number, destination, affected service, error text, approximate time and the Wi-Fi comparison result. A cropped screenshot is useful. Hide QR codes, activation details, account balances and other personal information.
Do not change the APN to try to select an internet-exit country. Use only the APN specified for the order. Keep the eSIM installed while support checks the exact plan. We cannot promise that a replacement or VPN will make a restricted service accept the connection.
