Decide which of these jobs you need before buying: app conversations, calls to ordinary telephone numbers, or texts sent to your Australian number. They use different services.
“Can I message the driver?” depends on how
If you and the driver both use WhatsApp, an existing configured account can use travel data for the conversation. You don't need to change the WhatsApp number just because you've changed the phone's data line. Re-registering an account is different and may require access to its original number.
If the only contact is a local business's ordinary phone number, pressing Call in the normal phone app does not turn it into an internet call included with our data plan. Use the business's supported app, email or booking-message route, or choose a voice-capable service.
For example, XL's named Indonesian tourist eSIM includes five all-operator minutes; giffgaff's named UK £10 pay-as-you-go plan includes UK calls/texts. Each has its own visitor eligibility, registration and activation process. Our Bali buying guide and UK buying guide explain those exact routes.
A number in Settings isn't proof of a calling service
An identifier or number-like value shown against a travel profile doesn't establish that it can receive ordinary calls or verification SMS. Use the purchased offer's explicit voice/SMS inclusions, not the presence of a field on the phone.
A new local number also doesn't replace the Australian number already recorded with your bank. Don't switch the bank's contact details to a temporary travel number just to solve a data problem.
Keep your Australian number for the task it still needs to do
If bank texts are essential, confirm roaming receipt and account eligibility with your Australian carrier, and set up the bank's supported app-based alternative before departure. The bank-SMS guide separates incoming SMS, app notifications and the charges other activity can trigger.
Keeping the home line active can allow its supported calls or SMS. It doesn't make them free. Data roaming off stops that line's roaming data, while ordinary calls, sent texts and voicemail can still have charges. Turning the whole line off makes its mobile calls and SMS unavailable until it is re-enabled.
Give each line one clear job
After installing our eSIM after landing on working Wi-Fi, label the lines Australian number and Travel data. Choose Travel data for mobile data and disable automatic switching. Keep data roaming off on the Australian line; follow the order email for the travel line's setting.
Review the voice and SMS defaults separately. Before calling a normal number, look at the selected calling line and use only a service whose charges you've accepted. A successful webpage test doesn't establish that ordinary calls use the same line.
On iPhone those choices sit under Settings, Mobile Service/Cellular/Mobile Data. Galaxy uses Connections, SIM manager; Pixel uses Network & internet, SIMs. Our dual-SIM guide gives the steps and device-specific limits. Leave installed profiles in place while support checks a problem.
