Choosing the best Bali eSIM for your trip

A Bali data plan has a fairly ordinary job: help you find the driver, message the villa, check where everyone has gone and establish whether “five minutes away” means five minutes away. You don’t need the biggest allowance on the page to do those things, although regular video calls, uploads or work can change the answer quite quickly.

The next question is whether you need an Indonesian number or simply an internet connection. A local eSIM can include ordinary call minutes, while a data-only travel plan can cover the app conversations and bookings you already use.

XL has a foreign-visitor eSIM sold online, so you can compare it with a travel eSIM without assuming the local option means finding a physical SIM counter. Check how you can obtain each service and when its validity starts, as well as the data allowance.

WhatsApp, maps, Grab or Gojek, accommodation messages and online bookings use data. They don’t usually require the local calling allowance sold with a numbered Indonesian service, although a particular app’s registration or your own account can have separate requirements.

If a local business needs you to make an ordinary call, or you need an Indonesian number for a specific service, a data-only plan doesn’t supply that number. Choose an offer that explicitly includes the service you need, rather than expecting a familiar carrier name on a travel eSIM to provide it.

For a starting estimate, use our trip planner with your dates, usual phone activities and any sharing with another device. It helps you choose an allowance for the whole trip, with a buffer included. Add any unusually large uploads to your thinking, and leave downloads and backups on Wi-Fi where practical; they can use far more than the maps and messages you bought the plan for.

The fixed-data options name Indosat, Telkomsel and XL, with 3G/4G/5G shown in the plan details. That listing doesn’t establish which technology will be available at a particular stop. Hotspot availability may depend on the phone and network. Same-area data reload is supported during active validity; it adds eligible data within that period rather than extending the expiry. The purchase-to-start window is 180 days. For a stay beyond thirty days, these quoted 30-day offers aren’t a single-plan solution.

For an illustrative four-day visit using 2GB, our 3GB plan covers the dates and leaves 1GB of allowance. For a fortnight using 25GB, the 20GB option is 5GB short, while 50GB gives 25GB of headroom. Those examples don’t predict your usage, but they show why choosing by the lowest price or biggest “from” number can lead to the wrong purchase.

If you expect 10GB across a fortnight, you can use more on one day and less on another. There is no daily high-speed reset on the fixed-data plans, which suits a trip where the day spent sending photos looks different from the day spent largely offline.

Our seven-day unlimited Indonesia offer is A$36.95, compared with A$44.95 for the selected seven-day 3GB/day option. The A$8 difference is a good reason to read the two contracts before treating the daily plan as an automatic step up.

The unlimited plan’s published speed guidance is a typical roaming average of 10–20Mbps, with actual performance dependent on the network. It isn’t a promised minimum, and the checked unlimited and daily options list Telkomsel/XL rather than exactly the same network details as the fixed-data range.

The daily plan resets at midnight UTC+8. That is midnight in Bali, but 11pm in Jakarta, which uses UTC+7; it isn’t a new 24-hour period beginning whenever you install the eSIM. Nor is seven days at 3GB/day one flexible 21GB pool that you can use entirely on the first afternoon.

The selected daily and unlimited plans have 60-day purchase-to-start windows and are non-reloadable. Their different allowance rules are worth comparing for heavier phone use, but we wouldn’t rely on either as the sole connection for essential laptop work. The unlimited plan’s supplier hasn’t confirmed hotspot support; the daily and fixed-data offers describe sharing as dependent on the phone and network. XL’s foreign-visitor eSIM page lists five 30-day main-data allowances: 14GB for Rp46,000, 30GB for Rp70,000, 55GB for Rp100,000, 80GB for Rp140,000 and 150GB for Rp168,000. Each includes five all-operator call minutes; that wording doesn’t establish included calls to Australia.

Its tourist eligibility and activation guidance is for foreign nationals holding a valid foreign passport, with Indonesian-passport buyers excluded. The purchase instructions require passport details, email and the phone’s IMEI. Our 25 October check of the 14GB route reached a number-selection step showing Rp46,000, before entering registration or payment details.

For the illustrative 25GB fortnight, the 14GB package is 11GB short and the 30GB option leaves 5GB. Compare that local service with the SIM Shop allowance that meets your needs, keeping rupiah and Australian dollars separate until you have an actual exchange rate and any payment fees.

Buy the XL tourist service when you’re ready to use it in Indonesia, rather than weeks before the holiday. XL describes activation upon purchase and allows up to an hour for its registration and signal checks after the QR email. That is an arrival-time purchase for this recommendation, distinct from our buy-before-departure, install-after-landing route.

The general Telkomsel eSIM page specifies KITAS, a limited stay permit, for foreign citizens obtaining a new number. We therefore aren’t recommending that general route to a passport-only holiday visitor. XL’s documented foreign-passport tourist route above is the local eSIM alternative used in this comparison.

That conclusion concerns the named online route, rather than proving Telkomsel has no tourist service through any channel. A historical tourist package and a general new-number eSIM page don’t, together, establish a current passport-only eSIM purchase.

For app data arranged before flying, our fixed-data range lets you buy a pool in Australian dollars: 10GB costs A$17.95 and 20GB costs A$24.95, each lasting up to 30 days once started. Choose around your usage rather than the full length of the allowance. A four-day visitor can still use a 30-day plan.

If you want the Indonesian number and included local call minutes, compare XL’s tourist eSIM and its visitor-registration requirements. For heavier on-phone data, compare the exact unlimited terms with a larger fixed pool. These choices have different setup and sharing conditions, so keep the instructions for the service you buy.

Before purchasing, check your phone’s compatibility and unlock status. Keep the Bali IMEI guide handy if registration classification affects your choice, because eSIM format alone doesn’t establish an exemption for every profile.

Buy our plan before flying, within its selected start window, and keep the setup email. Install after landing using airport Wi-Fi, with hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection as the fallback. Save the pickup point and villa address beforehand too, including any entrance instructions your driver will need.
