In this guide 6 sections
Choose the station before buying the airport fare
Vienna still has a perfectly useful airport railway. What it does not currently have is the familiar S7 ride straight through to Wien Mitte. If your arrival plan came from an older guide, that is the detail to change before you are standing beside a suitcase wondering why the city has rearranged itself.
During the main-line works, REX7 serves Hauptbahnhof, while S7 ends at St. Marx. Pick the arrival station that suits the next part of your journey, then buy the fare your existing city ticket does not cover. A Vienna city pass and an airport transfer are different things, even when both appear in the same app. ÖBB’s current airport arrangements
Choose the station before the train
The central section between Hauptbahnhof and Praterstern is closed from 7 September 2026, with the works scheduled through the end of October 2027. ÖBB continues to run airport trains through Hauptbahnhof, including REX7 and long-distance services. S7 turns back at St. Marx, where tram connections take over.
For the local rail choices, use this arrival plan:
| Where you want to finish | Useful rail arrival | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation beside Hauptbahnhof, or an onward train from there | REX7 to Hauptbahnhof | Leave from that station or make the onward rail connection |
| Somewhere reached conveniently on U1 | REX7 to Hauptbahnhof | Change to U1; the airport train is not itself an underground service |
| Accommodation around St. Marx | S7 to St. Marx | Finish locally rather than riding into another district and doubling back |
| Wien Mitte/Landstraße using S7 | S7 to St. Marx | Continue on bus 74A to Landstraße, where U3 and U4 connect |
The Vienna Tourist Board’s revised airport guide gives around 20 minutes for REX7 to Hauptbahnhof. That is the train journey, not a promise about when you will be at reception. The walk from the platform, a local connection and the final walk to the address still belong in your arrival plan.
For a hotel next to Hauptbahnhof, REX7 avoids an unnecessary local transfer. For a hotel beside St. Marx, taking S7 can be the more direct choice. Those are useful reasons to choose a service; the fact that one station sounds more central is not.
Pay for the part you are missing
For adults using S7 or REX7, the published airport-to-Vienna fare is €5.50, made up of €2.30 between the airport and the city boundary at Schwechat, plus €3.20 within Vienna. If you already have a valid city transport ticket, buy only the €2.30 airport extension from an ÖBB machine or counter. Airport fare and sales channels
Check the validity you hold today:
| What you hold when travelling | What to buy for this S7/REX7 journey |
|---|---|
| No valid city transport ticket | The full €5.50 adult airport-to-city fare |
| A city transport pass that is already valid | The €2.30 airport extension |
| A city transport pass whose selected validity starts tomorrow | The full fare today; tomorrow’s validity does not cover this journey |
If your city transport ticket is already valid, paying the full airport fare buys €3.20 of city travel again. Two adults would pay €4.60 for the extensions instead of €11 for two full fares, saving €6.40 because they already hold the city portion, rather than because of a couples’ discount.
The last example is about timing, not just ownership. Having paid for tomorrow’s pass does not make it valid this afternoon. If you bought it for a later run of sightseeing days, paying for today’s separate arrival can be preferable to using up part of that planned period early.
A City Card can mean three different things
The name on the card is not enough to settle the airport fare. The Discounts Only version has no city public transport included. It can be sold with an airport add-on, but its basic museum and shopping discounts are not a train ticket. Official Discounts Only inclusions
A Vienna City Card with city transport covers its selected local travel period. Without an airport add-on, it still leaves the airport extension to buy. A Vienna City Card with Airport Transfer includes that airport journey, so buying an additional transfer for the same covered trip would be unnecessary.
The airport package also has two different clocks. Its city transport lasts the selected 24, 48 or 72 hours; the airport-transfer benefit is valid for seven days from activation. It allows the listed airport modes to be combined, including CAT by bus, ÖBB Railjet, S7 and Vienna Airport Bus. Airport Transfer package terms
Consider a traveller who activates a 48-hour city-transport package with Airport Transfer on the first day and flies home on day five. By then, the 48-hour city allowance has finished, while the seven-day airport benefit is still running. The return airport transfer remains included; a separate local journey to reach its departure point needs its own valid city ticket. Buying another airport transfer would solve the wrong problem.
This matters when your last morning begins somewhere different from your arrival station. Keep the local ride and the airport ride as separate entries in your plan, even if you bought both benefits together.
CAT still reaches Wien Mitte, but on a bus
If a direct arrival at Wien Mitte is more useful than the S7-plus-74A combination, CAT’s current service is a coach. The operator runs its replacement buses between the airport and Wien Mitte, with up to five departures per hour. Choose it as a road transfer, not for an imagined ride on the green train. CAT’s closure arrangements
The €2.30 rail extension is not a general airport-transfer voucher. CAT and Vienna Airport Bus have their own tickets unless your particular package includes them. Vienna’s ticket validity rules
For a traveller already holding city transport and happy to change at St. Marx, the extension is a useful, clearly priced choice. For someone whose Airport Transfer package already includes CAT, its direct Wien Mitte service is a different practical option without buying a second airport ticket. Compare what you already own before paying for convenience twice.
Make the last step as clear as the first
For a separate local journey, Vienna’s published adult single costs €3.20 and permits changes during one uninterrupted, one-way journey of up to 80 minutes. It does not turn an arrival ticket into an afternoon of sightseeing. Paper tickets that need validation go into the blue machines before entering the underground or S-Bahn system; on trams and buses, validate in the vehicle. City ticket use and validation
Save your accommodation address, chosen arrival station and onward connection before flying. On arrival, enter the actual destination and travel time in ÖBB SCOTTY, rather than searching only for “Vienna”. This supplies the departure that fits the time you have actually cleared the terminal, including that day’s changes.
For SCOTTY updates and accommodation messages after arrival, compare The SIM Shop’s Austria eSIM options for your wider stay. Save the ticket and onward directions too, so you can open them without a signal.
Routes and published adult fares checked on 21 October 2026. The works end date is the operator’s current plan. Pass and party examples illustrate those rules; no live departure, purchase or connection was tested.
