Vodafone prepaid roaming vs a travel eSIM: costs and limits

For a longer, mostly data-based trip, compare the full cost of repeated prepaid add-ons with a travel eSIM. Check the expiry timestamp at purchase: Vodafone’s public pages and Critical Information Summary use different wording about when the expiry period begins.

These are total allowances per add-on. The A$35 option has 7GB across the pack, not 7GB every day. Incoming and outgoing standard calls use minutes. Vodafone’s support page says standard incoming SMS is free overseas, which is useful for travellers keeping their number available.

• Your last recharge must be on an eligible Prepaid Plus or Pay and Go plan.
• The Vodafone SIM must have been activated in Australia.
• International roaming must be enabled for the service in My Vodafone.
• Your destination must appear in the add-on’s current coverage list.
• Vodafone’s 90-days-per-calendar-year roaming limit must still leave enough time for the trip.

A familiar Vodafone logo overseas is not proof that your Australian prepaid add-on covers that country or network. Check your own service and the destination list. If a family member has Vodafone on a different plan, do not assume the same roaming product applies to both phones.

Vodafone’s pages give different descriptions of when the prepaid countdown starts: the marketing page refers to midnight AEST, card wording also mentions purchase time, and the Critical Information Summary says midnight AEST/AEDT after purchase. Support adds destination-time conditions. With those differences, we wouldn’t promise a rolling 24 hours from every purchase. Use the exact expiry confirmed in your account.

Before paying, read the expiry shown for the add-on in My Vodafone. After purchase, save the confirmation and exact timestamp. If it is unclear, ask Vodafone to state when the allowance ends in your destination’s local time. This matters particularly for a late-night purchase or a flight crossing several timezones.

Do not assume that buying at 11pm always leaves one hour, or that a “one-day” pack always runs until 11pm the next day. Plan against the expiry Vodafone confirms for your account. If you cannot obtain a usable expiry time, keep Vodafone data roaming off and use a separate data connection instead of budgeting around an assumed extra day.

Vodafone says pay-as-you-go roaming can use MyCredit after an add-on expires or its inclusions are exhausted. A pack ending is therefore not a reliable spending stop. Its current prepaid pay-as-you-go data rate is A$51.20 per MB, billed in 1KB increments. This is the prepaid rate, not the A$1/MB postpaid rate. Turn Vodafone-line data roaming off before the allowance ends if you do not want credit spent that way.

For data, turn off data roaming on the Vodafone line and select a separate travel eSIM if that is your intended connection. Ordinary calls and outgoing texts remain separate. If you want the Vodafone line completely inactive on the phone, turn the line off, recognising that bank texts will not arrive through it while it is off.

For a week, the eSIM purchase is A$15.05 less; against two A$35 purchases it is A$50.05 less. The two-week options have different data totals and communication inclusions. Use this as a budget comparison, not an equivalent-service saving claim. Your Australian plan cost is separate in all cases.

If you need many ordinary calls, the Vodafone allowances may be worth paying for. If you mainly need maps, messaging apps and bookings, the Japan 10GB / 30-day plan at A$19.95 gives you a single travel-data pool without weekly renewal.

Check that the phone is unlocked and supports the lines you want active together. Save account access and the travel eSIM email before departure. Install the travel eSIM after landing on reliable Wi-Fi, select it for mobile data and disable automatic data switching.
