Vodafone prepaid roaming add-ons vs a travel eSIM

What the add-ons actually are

From Vodafone’s Prepaid Roaming Add-ons Critical Information Summary and their prepaid roaming page:

The minutes are two way, covering both incoming and outgoing calls, and charged in 60 second increments.

Worth noting because several comparison sites get this wrong: these data allowances are published. They appear in the Critical Information Summary, in Vodafone’s master roaming terms, and in the plan card data on the marketing page itself. If you have read elsewhere that Vodafone does not publish prepaid roaming data allowances, that is out of date.

You buy them by texting ROAM1, ROAM3 or ROAM7 to 1511, or through My Vodafone, or Express Recharge. My Vodafone is free rated, so browsing it does not consume data.

The midnight expiry, and Vodafone arguing with itself

This is the thing most likely to cost you money, and Vodafone states it four different ways on its own site.

The body copy on the prepaid page:

“The expiry period for the Add-on will begin from midnight Australia Eastern Standard Time on the day of purchase.”

The Critical Information Summary:

“Once you activate your Prepaid Roaming Add-on, you have this many days until your inclusions expire. The expiry period will begin from midnight AEST/AEDT after purchase.”

Vodafone’s support page goes further and explains the timezone consequence:

“If you’re roaming in a destination that are in a time zone ahead of Australia, such as New Zealand, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa or Fiji, your Add-on will expire at midnight local time. If you’re roaming in a destination that are in a time zone behind Australia, such as the UK, USA, China or Canada, your Add-on will expire at midnight AEST time.”

But the plan cards, sitting immediately below that body copy on the same page, say “1 day expiry from time of purchase”. And the footer terms say “expiry after purchase”. And the master roaming terms say the expiry periods “begin on purchase”.

Those are not the same rule. On the midnight reading, a $5 one day add-on bought at 11pm Australian time expires an hour later. On the plan card reading, you get a full 24 hours.

We are not going to tell you which one your account will apply. We are going to tell you that Vodafone publishes both, that the Critical Information Summary is the regulated disclosure document and it says midnight, and that the safe move is to buy early in the Australian day and not rely on getting a full 24 hours.

What happens if you skip the add-on

“Prepaid customers who use data while roaming will incur a charge of $51.20 per MB with a 1KB increment.”

That is Vodafone’s published figure and it is not a typo. It works out to more than fifty two thousand dollars a gigabyte. Nobody is going to consume a gigabyte at that rate because the credit runs out first, but it is worth knowing that unlike Telstra prepaid, which has no pay as you go roaming at all, Vodafone prepaid does have a rate and it is punitive.

Turn data roaming off on the Vodafone line if you are not buying an add-on.

The other conditions

Handsets only. “Is international roaming available on prepaid mobile broadband? No. Prepaid international roaming is only available for prepaid phone services.” And “Included data is for use on handsets only.” So no tablets, no mobile broadband devices, and tethering is not contemplated.

Your last recharge must be Prepaid Plus or Pay and Go. Other prepaid products cannot buy the add-ons.

The SIM must have been activated in Australia.

Maximum 90 days of roaming per calendar year, the same cap that applies to postpaid.

You have to turn roaming on separately. “Once you’ve purchased the Add-on, you also need to activate roaming through My Vodafone.” Buying the pack is not enough.

Rollover exists but only like for like. “If you recharge your Prepaid Roaming Add-on product with another Prepaid Roaming Add-on with the same expiry period before the end of the Credit Expiry Period, unused inclusions will be rolled over.” Note “with the same expiry period”, so a $5 pack does not roll into a $35 one.

80 destinations. Vodafone says “over 80 selected destinations”; the list published on the page contains 79 named entries, one of which reads “Serbia & Megronteno”, presumably a typo for Montenegro that would make 80. The prepaid list is materially smaller than the postpaid one and excludes Taiwan, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan, Bangladesh, most of Africa and most of Latin America.

When the Vodafone prepaid add-ons are the better buy

Short trips with calls. $5 for 1GB plus 100 minutes and 100 texts is a lot of talk time for the money, and it is on your own number. We do not offer calls at all.

When you want simple pricing. $5 a gigabyte at every tier, no zones, no tiers within tiers.

A week with moderate use. The $35 pack at 7GB over seven days is a reasonable product for a one week trip.

When you would rather not install anything. Text a code to 1511 and you are done.

When a travel eSIM makes more sense

Your destination is outside the 80. Check the list.

Trips longer than a week. The largest add-on runs seven days. Two of them for a fortnight is $70 for 14GB.

Tablets, hotspots or a second device. Prepaid roaming is handset only.

You want a longer validity window. Our plans run 30 days as standard.

Every row includes 150 to 350 minutes of calls on the Vodafone side that we do not offer. If you need to make actual phone calls, that changes the comparison.

Running both

Receiving a text on Vodafone is free and does not trigger anything, so you can keep your prepaid number alive for bank codes while a travel eSIM carries the data. Simply do not buy an add-on, and turn data roaming off on the Vodafone line so you never touch the $51.20 per MB rate.

Buy the eSIM before you fly, check your phone is compatible and unlocked, install it on airport wifi after you land, and set it as your data line with roaming on for that line only.

The verdict

Buy the Vodafone prepaid add-on if your destination is on the 80, your trip is a week or less, and you want a solid block of call minutes on your own number.

Buy a travel eSIM if your trip is longer than a week, you need data on a tablet or hotspot, your destination is outside the list, or you want a plan that lasts a month rather than seven days.

Questions people actually ask

Does the Vodafone prepaid add-on include data?

Yes. $5 gives 1GB, $15 gives 3GB and $35 gives 7GB, alongside call minutes and texts. The allowances are published in the Critical Information Summary and the roaming terms.

When does a prepaid add-on expire?

Vodafone says two different things on the same page. The body copy and the Critical Information Summary say the period starts at midnight Australian time on the day of purchase. The plan cards say it runs from the time of purchase. Buy early in the Australian day to be safe.

What happens if I use data without an add-on?

Vodafone charges $51.20 per megabyte on prepaid. Turn data roaming off on the Vodafone line if you are not buying a pack.

Can I use a prepaid roaming add-on on a tablet?
