We sell fixed-data and unlimited options at The SIM Shop. Sometimes the smaller fixed bucket is the sensible buy. Sometimes paying more to stop counting phone data is worth it. Here's how to tell which situation you're in.
What do you get, and when does it change?

A plan with 3GB a day does not let you save up 21GB to use whenever you like during the week. If you need 5GB on one day, you can use up that day’s faster data even after several quiet days. A 20GB plan for the trip lets you spread the allowance across busier and quieter days; what happens after you use all 20GB depends on that plan.
Published examples that show the differences
Airalo's general unlimited policy describes 3GB of high-speed data per 24-hour period from activation, then 1Mbps for the remainder, with package-specific exceptions. Use the selected package's stated allowance where it differs.
Saily's regular unlimited plans state either 3GB or 5GB daily in the applicable offer, then 1Mbps, resetting at local midnight. Ultra subscriptions use different monthly conditions. Don't carry a daily-plan rule across to that subscription.
Ubigi’s unlimited plans work in different ways. Some slow down after a set amount across the trip; one daily option gives you 5GB, then 2Mbps, with the next faster allowance starting every 24 hours from activation. Check which of those plans you are buying, because the clocks are different.
Holafly's Japan plan publishes a separate 1GB-per-day hotspot allowance. Its general fair-use terms allow network restrictions without giving a single numeric phone-data threshold for every product. That is different from claiming it has no possible restrictions.
These are published terms, not measured speeds. Coverage, congestion, the phone and local network can affect performance even before a threshold is reached.
Three Japan choices, using the same seven days
Our current selected offers are:

For example, 0.8GB a day for seven days plus 1GB spare comes to 6.6GB. That fits the A$19.95 10GB plan and leaves 3.4GB. If that is enough for your own use, the seven-day full-speed unlimited plan would cost A$15 more. The figures are an example to compare with your habits, not a typical allowance for everyone.
If the laptop needs 10GB over seven days, the 10Mbps Japan plan’s 6GB sharing allowance will not cover it. Holafly Japan allows 1GB of sharing a day, at most 7GB over the week, and quiet-day data cannot be saved for a busier day. Our seven-day full-speed Japan offer has no separate sharing allowance and can cover this example, subject to your phone and network. Keep laptop updates and large automatic backups under control whichever you choose.
The longer Japan plans work differently
The local KDDI plans cover 11–21, 26 and 31 days in Japan, with different sharing and expiry rules from the shorter plans. Your first date of KDDI data use counts as Day 1, and you must also start by the date supplied with the eSIM. Heavy phone use is reviewed over a rolling three-day period and may slow to around 1Mbps; the operator has not given a fixed GB amount that triggers that slowdown.
For example, the fourteen-day local KDDI plan costs A$60.95 and includes 13GB for sharing over the trip. After that sharing allowance, the laptop connection may slow to around 128kbps. Choose enough days and sharing data for your actual trip; a longer full-speed plan does not inherit unlimited sharing from a shorter one.
Thailand's 100GB is across the plan
The seven-day Thailand offer costs A$24.95. It gives you 100GB at up to 10Mbps across the seven days, then data continues at 384kbps. The 100GB does not renew each morning.
We have not confirmed whether this Thailand offer supports laptop sharing or how shared data counts against its 100GB. Do not rely on it for essential laptop work until that has been answered for the exact plan.

Choose the allowance, then arrange setup
Use the trip planner with your dates, phone-use choices and sharing needs. It gives you a rough data estimate and a matching option when available; compare the result with the plan’s speed, laptop-sharing and expiry details above. It does not compare competitors or promise a signal at a particular address.
Buy and save the setup email before travel. Install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi after its sign-in page, or on hotel Wi-Fi if the airport connection isn't steady. Our selected short Japan offers have a 60-day start window; other plans, especially local KDDI, use different deadlines. Follow the exact order's start information.
