Start with the actual plan name in your account. “I'm with Telstra” or “it's the sixty-dollar plan” isn't enough to establish the roaming product you can use.
Which roaming product does your plan support?

A high domestic price doesn't establish eligibility. Some plans already have their own roaming inclusion, and another tariff's advertised pass cannot simply be assumed to apply on top.
Find it in your mobile account
My Telstra: open Services, choose the mobile number and its international-roaming details. Establish whether the plan is Upfront, older postpaid or Pre-Paid. The Day Pass CIS lists exclusions, including plans with their own roaming allowance. If yours has a bundled allowance, ask what remains and what happens after it is used.
My Optus: open Services, your service and Add-ons. Look for Daily Roaming. Current published eligibility includes Optus Choice Plus, Plus Family, Plus Promo, specified Plus data plans, Qantas and named business Plus plans. If the account instead shows a Roaming Pass or a prepaid add-on, use that product's terms. Older products aren't automatically the same A$5/5GB offer.
My Vodafone: open International roaming and Roaming settings, then establish that your plan qualifies for A$5 Roaming and that its international-roaming network setting is enabled if you intend to use it. Holding, Assured, Stay Connected, Red Cap and other excluded families or specified mobile-broadband signup dates can have a different position. The exact account and plan summary decide it.
If the product isn't shown, ask the carrier: “Can [exact plan name and signup date] use [named roaming product] in [each country], and what are its data, call and SMS inclusions?” Until it confirms that answer, keep the Australian line's data roaming off and use Wi-Fi or separately arranged travel data. A guess at eligibility isn't a spending control.
Vodafone's included data has a specific boundary
A$5 Roaming generally uses the eligible data already included in the plan. The domestic portion capped at 1.5, 2, 10 or 25Mbps is excluded. Once eligible included data is exhausted, additional roaming data can be added at A$5 per GB.
The published Ultra+ arrangement is different: unlimited phone data with 30GB hotspot, then A$5 per extra hotspot GB. That exception isn't a reason to apply Ultra+ terms to another Vodafone plan. A$5 Roaming is limited to ninety days per calendar year; ask about remaining eligible days before a long trip.
Prepaid isn't always a poor-value fallback
Telstra Pre-Paid's published packs are A$10/400MB/3 days, A$15/2GB/7 days and A$25/4GB/14 days. Optus's selected prepaid add-ons include A$25/5GB/14 days and A$45/10GB/28 days. Vodafone's prepaid add-ons are a separate product from its monthly A$5 Roaming.
Compare ordinary minutes and texts, the destination list and the actual expiry. For example, a traveller needing four gigabytes and ordinary calls over a fortnight may value Telstra's A$25 pack. Someone needing ten gigabytes of app-based data should compare a larger allowance, not assume the same fourteen-day label solves it.
Don't confuse eligibility with the charge trigger
Optus Daily Roaming can trigger through home-line data, calls or sent texts. Receiving an ordinary SMS alone doesn't trigger that pass. Telstra Day Pass also separates incoming SMS from chargeable use, but its Pre-Paid pack rules differ. Vodafone publishes its own trigger conditions.
Keeping Australian-line data roaming off controls data, not all calls or voicemail. If you only need bank codes, use the bank-SMS guide and arrange carrier eligibility and bank authentication before departure.
