The 365 day expiry, and why it is genuinely clever
Two quotes from amaysim’s own page:
“365 days expiry: Use your pack as you need over a year, including across multiple trips.”
“Stackable: Buy another pack and your unused inclusions will roll over to your new pack, under your new expiry period.”
And on repeat use across trips:
“Sure, as long as you’re within the 365 day expiry period, you have inclusions left and International Roaming is on, you’ll use your pack any time you travel in one of our Selected Destinations.”
This is the strongest thing about the product and it deserves proper credit. Prepaid travel data is a category built on breakage. Providers sell you seven days, you use three, they keep the difference. amaysim declined to build it that way, and the rollover on repurchase means an active customer effectively never loses anything.
Nothing we sell does this. Our plans run 30 days and unused data expires.
The destination count, which we could not pin down
We tried to state a number and could not, and the reason is worth reporting.
amaysim’s roaming page carries three different claims:
“Add roaming in 120+ Selected Destinations to your plan from just $20, with 365 days to use”
“Roam in 90+ destinations from just $20, with 365 days to use”
“Our roaming packs will cover you in 120+ popular travel destinations”
And it publishes two different lists. The main “See all selected destinations” list contains 153 entries. The FAQ list contains 115. Thirty eight destinations appear in one and not the other, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman, Jordan, Laos and most of the Caribbean.
So the honest statement is amaysim’s own headline figure, 120 plus, with the caveat that you should check the specific destination in the main list rather than trusting any of the three numbers.
The other mechanics
You buy in the app. “All you need to do to activate International Roaming is add an International Roaming Pack to your plan by purchasing one through the amaysim app and ensure that International Roaming is enabled in your device.” No SMS purchase route, which means you need wifi or working data to buy one overseas.
The pack survives as long as your number does. “As long as your phone number is still active on the network, you’ll be able to use your International Roaming Pack until you’ve finished your inclusions or it expires”.
No published pay as you go rate. We could not find an overage or fallback rate on any amaysim roaming page. What happens if you run out mid trip is that you buy another pack.
They are explicitly targeting our category. amaysim’s marketing line is “Say goodbye travel SIM, hello amaysim.” Fair enough, and worth knowing that this is a deliberate competitive position rather than an accident.
When amaysim is the better buy
Multiple short trips a year. This is the case the product is built for and it wins it outright. Four long weekends across a year on THE EPIC is $70 total for 9GB and 100 minutes, spread however you like. Buying four separate travel eSIMs would cost more and waste more.
When you want your number to work for calls. SMALL TALK at $20 for 100 minutes and 100 texts with no data at all is an unusual and sensible product for someone who genuinely just needs to make calls.
When you hate waste. If the thing that annoys you about travel data is paying for gigabytes you never use, amaysim has designed directly against that.
Light use over a long period. 2GB that lasts a year suits a traveller who only needs maps and messages occasionally.
When a travel eSIM makes more sense
One trip, real data use. Here is the arithmetic using our prices from 17 August 2026:

The 35-area plan does not include France. If Paris or anywhere else in France is on your itinerary, take Europe 30+ Areas instead: it covers 34 destinations including France and Turkey, and 10GB over 30 days is A$29.95. The 35-area list also leaves out Turkey, Serbia, North Macedonia, Gibraltar and the Channel Islands.
On a single trip with normal data use, the gap is wide. THE EPIC at $70 for 9GB is roughly four times what our Indonesia 10GB plan costs.
Heavier use. 9GB is the ceiling. There is no larger pack.
When you are not already an amaysim customer, since the packs require an amaysim service.
When you need to buy connectivity without data. The app is the only purchase route.
Running both
amaysim publishes no pay as you go roaming rate, and roaming works only with an active pack, so leaving the line on without a pack should not generate charges. We would still turn data roaming off on the amaysim line as a precaution, and leave the line itself on so it can receive texts.
Buy the travel eSIM before you fly, check your phone is compatible and unlocked, install it on airport wifi, and set it as your data line.
The verdict
Buy the amaysim pack if you travel several times a year, you want your own number for calls, or the thing you dislike most about travel data is losing what you did not use.
Buy a travel eSIM if you are taking one trip and you want gigabytes rather than flexibility.
The interesting thing about amaysim is that it is not really competing on price. It is competing on expiry, and on that it is the best product in the Australian market.
