Belgium SIM or eSIM: follow the call credit, data expiry and registration

A Belgian prepaid top-up can give you call credit and bonus data, with the option to spend some of that credit on more data. That can be useful, provided you keep track of the balance: money spent on data is no longer available for calls, and the bonus can expire before the number itself does.

If you need an ordinary Belgian number, the identity route and the credit left for calls belong beside the gigabytes in the comparison. If maps, bookings and app conversations cover the trip, you can instead choose a data allowance without funding a calling service you won’t use.

BASE’s eSIM page explicitly offers new prepaid eSIMs as well as replacement profiles. It is not a subscription-only service.

Its activation guide, checked on 21 October 2026, gives different instructions for the website and app:

itsme is the identity service named in the website instructions. Someone who does not use it should not assume that a website passport-upload step will deliver an eSIM, nor conclude that every BASE app route is impossible. Follow the app’s published manual option if appropriate, and use BASE store assistance if identification cannot be completed.

Converting an existing BASE physical SIM deactivates that physical card. That instruction concerns the BASE line being converted; it is not a reason to remove or discard your separate Australian SIM.

The €10-and-up cards also advertise unlimited BASE-to-BASE calls, with Belgium-only conditions. The credit and its minute equivalent are not two separate balances: at the published €0.25-per-minute rate, €15 represents 60 chargeable local minutes if spent on those calls alone; the free BASE-to-BASE benefit is separate.

For a 12-day visit expecting 3GB and some ordinary Belgian calls, the €15 top-up gives you 1GB of data to spare; the €10 option is already 2GB short. You still need to buy and register an eligible line first, so these top-up prices aren’t the full cost of getting started.

BASE also advertises monthly subscriptions on the page. Those involve a different billing arrangement; this comparison uses the prepaid top-up conditions, rather than transferring subscription extras into a visitor’s prepaid purchase.

The same prepaid page lists 2 GB for €10 of call credit, 4 GB for €15 and 8 GB for €25. Its Extra Data help explains that the cost is deducted from existing credit and that the extra allowance lasts 30 days after activation.

Assume a newly topped-up €15 balance is otherwise untouched. It brings the advertised 4 GB bonus, and spending €10 of that balance on the 2 GB Extra Data option produces 6 GB in total, while leaving €5 of call credit. At €0.25 per chargeable local minute, that remainder is equivalent to 20 minutes, rather than the original 60.

For 5GB and 20 chargeable Belgian minutes over 12 days, that combination fits with 1GB spare. You top up €15, then spend €10 of that existing credit on data, rather than pay another €10. Any cost to buy and activate the line comes on top.

Change the chargeable calling requirement to 40 minutes and the same conversion no longer fits: its remaining credit covers only 20. The €25 top-up’s 8 GB and 100-minute credit equivalent meet those two quantity inputs without that conversion, at €10 more in top-up spending. Choosing the data option is a trade between two uses of the same money, rather than a free upgrade because you were not talking much.

In My BASE app, select the prepaid product and its option to exchange call credit for data. The published SMS alternatives are SURF10, SURF15 or SURF25 to 1914 for the respective 2, 4 or 8 GB options. Only options affordable from the remaining credit appear as available.

BASE says bonus data and free benefits last 30 days after top-up. A further top-up of at least €10 within that period extends the remaining bonus MBs by 30 days, while unused free minutes and SMS are replaced. A €5 reload leaves those earlier free benefits at their original expiry.

So, if you add €5 on day 25, do not schedule another 30 days of the old bonus data. The distinction is the qualifying reload amount, not simply whether any money reached the account. Extra Data has its own 30-day activation clock, while keeping the SIM active requires a top-up at least once every 365 days; that annual retention rule does not provide annual bundled data.

There is a dated trap on the page too: its displayed 2 GB activation promotion has conditions specifying 1 July to 31 December 2023. That old gift is excluded from the current buying examples.

Out-of-bundle data is listed at €0.50 per MB in KB increments. Once the valid allowances are exhausted, continued use spends credit, so turn mobile data off while arranging an appropriate replacement rather than assuming a slower free connection will continue.

These variants list Base, Orange and Proximus with 4G/5G access, first-network activation and a 180-day window to start. Hotspot availability depends on the network and device. These travel-data plans do not inherit BASE’s local call-credit rules or promise identical service on each named network.

If you need app data rather than a Belgian number, these allowances let you keep the data budget separate from calling credit. The prices are in AUD; the BASE amounts remain in euros, so they have not been used to declare a cheapest provider.

Buy before departure, save the delivery email and install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, following our Belgium setup guide. Keep Australian-line data roaming off unless deliberately using that carrier’s roaming service, and follow the issued instructions for the travel line itself.
