Keep data from disappearing in the background
- Download offline maps and the first accommodation details while still on Wi-Fi.
- Set photo and cloud-backup apps to Wi-Fi only for the trip.
- Turn off automatic app updates and high-quality video autoplay on mobile data.
- If you need to share data with a laptop or another phone, treat hotspot as a separate requirement and check the selected plan’s current note rather than assuming it is included.
Questions people actually ask
How much data do I need for a week in Bali?
One to two gigabytes if you are mostly at the villa on wifi using maps and messages. Three to five if you are out all day using Grab, searching and posting. Seven or more if you stream or share the connection.
Is 10GB enough for two weeks in Bali?
For most trips, comfortably. Ten gigabytes covers daily navigation, ride apps, messaging and a fair amount of browsing across a fortnight. It is not enough if you are streaming nightly or hotspotting a laptop for work.
How much data does Grab use?
There is no dependable per-ride number to plan around. Grab needs live data for booking, driver messages and trip updates, but a ride is not in the same league as streaming video. Downloading Bali in Google Maps over wifi helps with your own navigation; it does not make Grab work offline.
What is the cheapest Indonesia plan that is actually useful?
For a short trip with light use, our Indonesia 3GB over 30 days at A$9.95 is the cheapest fixed-data plan we would start with. For a regular week, 5GB over 30 days at A$11.95 better matches the 3 to 5GB planning range in this guide. Choose 10GB over 30 days at A$17.95 for a fortnight, heavier use or more headroom.
Booking ahead: our Indonesia 1GB/day and 3GB/day plans, plus the 1GB over 7 days fixed plan, have a 60-day use-by. The 5GB/day and 10GB/day plans, and the fixed-data plans from 3GB upwards, have 180 days. If your trip is more than two months away, choose a plan whose page shows 180 days or wait before buying one of the shorter-window plans.
How long do I have to use an Indonesia eSIM after buying it?
It depends on the selected plan. Our 1GB over 7 days plan and the 1GB/day and 3GB/day families give you 60 days to start. Fixed data from 3GB upwards and the 5GB/day and 10GB/day families give you 180 days. That start window is separate from the plan’s active validity, so check the selected plan page before paying.
Will it work outside Bali?
The product is for Indonesia, not Bali only. Lombok, Java and Flores are within the destination, but service still depends on the selected plan’s supported network and local coverage. Check the plan’s network list before paying, particularly for remote islands.
What uses data without me noticing?
Automatic photo backup is the big one on a beach holiday, because you are taking far more photos than usual. Switch it to wifi only before you fly. App updates and autoplaying video in social apps are the other two.
Do I need data the moment I land at Denpasar?
Usually yes, for your driver or transfer. Buy the plan before you fly, save the setup email and check your phone at home. After landing at Denpasar, join working airport wifi and install from the saved email. If the airport connection is not usable, use hotel wifi or another steady trusted connection instead.
Set the phone up only after landing
Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.
When you install, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you intentionally use home-carrier roaming. On current iPhone software, the data-line path starts at Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; other iPhones may say Cellular or Mobile Data. When the estimate is not enough
Do not assume every eSIM can be topped up or extended. Check the current order details and eSIM status first.
