Before the sightseeing begins in France, data is most useful for arrival navigation, accommodation details, bookings and messages. That does not make a border, island or next-country detour automatically included. Choose the option that matches that trip, not the one with the loudest headline. Convenience, phone-number needs and coverage are different trade-offs.

Who runs the networks in France, and what may change
France has four mobile network operators: Orange, Free Mobile, SFR and Bouygues Telecom. In ARCEP’s second-quarter 2024 outdoor 4G data, each reported coverage of between 99.5% and 99.9% of the population. That is population coverage, not a promise for every rural road, building or train line. Coverage and service quality are separate questions.
Orange says ARCEP’s 2025 quality survey marked its fifteenth consecutive year as the leading network, with Orange first or equal first on 251 of the 258 measures. That is a broad result, but it still does not make one carrier best in every location.
The four-operator structure may change. On 6 June 2026, Bouygues Telecom, Free-iliad and Orange signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire SFR from Altice France for an enterprise value of €20.35 billion, split roughly 42% to Bouygues, 31% to Free-iliad and 27% to Orange. ARCEP described it as a possible consolidation of Metropolitan France to three operators.
Today this changes nothing you can feel. The transaction still needs regulatory approval, definitive documents were expected in the second half of 2026, completion could occur in the second half of 2027, and the parties state that there is no certainty it will proceed. SFR remains a current operator until that changes.

The route-specific deciding question
For a trip confined to France, a single-destination travel eSIM can be a clean data option. If the route grows, compare a regional plan rather than stretching a one-country option.
If you choose the travel eSIM, set it up after landing
Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.
On iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Service, Cellular or Mobile Data, then use Add eSIM, Add Mobile Plan or scan the QR code with Camera. Select the travel line under Mobile Data. On Samsung, use Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan/Add eSIM and make it the Primary or Preferred data SIM. On Pixel, use Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM, then select it for mobile data. Android labels vary, so do not force a Samsung route onto another brand.

A last check that saves a bill surprise
Before you leave the Wi-Fi connection, open your phone’s Mobile Data/SIM screen and confirm the travel eSIM is the data line. Then look at the Australian line separately: keep its data roaming off unless you deliberately chose home-carrier roaming. Turning on a travel eSIM does not automatically make the home line safe or unsafe. The line selection is the point that decides it.
If the eSIM will not connect
- Confirm the travel eSIM appears in SIM settings and is switched on. Then confirm it, not your Australian line, is selected for mobile data.
- Check that Aeroplane Mode is off. If the order email says Data Roaming is required, follow its travel-eSIM instruction and keep Australian-line roaming off. On some Galaxy models the roaming control is not clearly per line, so stop and ask support if the travel line is not identifiable. If the email supplies an APN, copy that exact APN only.
- Wait a few minutes for local network registration, then toggle Aeroplane Mode on for about 30 seconds and off again. Restart the phone only after the line and data-selection checks.
- Do not delete the eSIM, reset mobile settings or scan the QR code again as a first fix. A deleted travel eSIM is not automatically reusable, and a network reset can remove APN settings.
