France eSIMs: a French number, enough data and the right expiry

Most holiday phone use in France is fairly ordinary: finding the next address, checking a booking and messaging whoever has wandered off. A data-only eSIM can handle those jobs, while ringing a restaurant’s telephone number or receiving ordinary French calls needs a service with the relevant calling facilities.

Orange Travel sells both data-only and calling plans, while our selected France plans supply data, so choose that part of the service before comparing allowances. Then follow the expiry of both the data and, for Orange, the profile carrying it; they are separate clocks, even when they appear in the same purchase.

We sell the SIM Shop plans below. Selected prices and the registration and top-up instructions were checked on 25 October 2026. Our prices are in Australian dollars; Orange’s selected prices are in euros. Compare the final amounts in the same currency if cost is the deciding factor.

An eSIM can include a phone number, so local calls don’t necessarily mean buying a physical SIM after landing. Orange’s voice-inclusive offers provide a French number and local calls and texts. Its data-only offers don’t provide that same service.

Our France plans are data-only, without ordinary French calls or SMS. If your accommodation has given you a messaging-app contact, the data can support that conversation. If it has given you a telephone number, an app-data plan doesn’t include the ordinary call. Keep the contact method with the booking so you know what you’ll need.

Your Australian number is separate again. Bank verification texts don’t move to a new travel line, and ordinary calls on your Australian service remain subject to your carrier’s arrangements and charges.

The SIM Shop France eSIM has these selected fixed-data options for one phone:

For eight days expecting 800MB, the 1GB option has enough data but ends a day too early. The 3GB/30-day plan fits at A$11.95, leaving 2.2GB spare. You don’t have to use every gigabyte: in this case, the larger option is how you get enough days.

All seven list Orange with 3G/4G/5G service. They begin on first supported-network connection, and you have 180 days from purchase to start. That start window isn’t the running validity: once connected, the 3GB plan gives you thirty days to use its balance.

Each allowance is one total, without a daily refill. Hotspot availability depends on the network and device. Same-area data reload is available during active validity, without extending the original expiry. Nor does a host-network name guarantee reception inside a particular apartment or along a train route.

These selected Orange Travel France offers show what changes when you add ordinary calls:

The selected 20GB/30-day data details and both voice-offer details specify 4G. The calling plans include a French number and unlimited local calls and texts, with separate international allowances. Don’t read “unlimited local” as unlimited calls worldwide or assume calls to Australia are included.

For a fortnight needing 18GB and ordinary French calls, the 20GB voice plan fits with 2GB spare. Within Orange’s displayed range, the calling service costs €3 more than the same-size, same-duration data-only card. Our data-only plan wouldn’t replace it for that need.

For sixteen days needing 18GB without calls, Orange’s 30-day data offer is the relevant comparison. Paying €1 more than the fourteen-day data card gets a period that lasts through the final day.

For thirty days expecting 45GB and local calls, its 50GB calling plan fits with 5GB spare. The €10 above Orange’s same-duration data-only card pays for the calling service, rather than more data. Our 50GB/30-day option remains data-only, even though Orange is its listed host network.

With Orange, registering the eSIM and keeping a data package active are separate jobs. Its identity portal gives the profile an initial 31-day life, extended by six months after identity approval. Its help page says to submit documents within thirty days to avoid suspension, so do the registration when you receive the profile rather than wait for either deadline.

There’s no useful reason to wait for either deadline. Submit registration when you receive the profile, using a valid passport that meets both instructions. Uploading the documents may take five minutes; the help page allows up to ten days for verification.

Choose the offer type matching your confirmation email. For a +33 offer, the instructions ask for the French number in ten-digit 06/07 format, retaining its leading zero, and the thirteen-digit eSIM number beginning with 2. For data-only offers, use the thirteen-digit eSIM ID beginning with 1. Take those details from the actual order email and match your personal details to the passport.

Keep the approval confirmation if you’ll use the service beyond its initial profile period. Six months of profile life doesn’t provide six months of data or add days to a thirty-day package. You still need an eligible, active data plan on it.

Orange’s top-up rule says a new top-up replaces the remaining validity instead of adding to it.

If your package has twenty days left and you buy a thirty-day top-up, the new period is thirty days, not fifty. If you still have enough data, waiting until the last day avoids losing those remaining days. If the data runs out sooner, a top-up can supply more, but its new validity replaces the old period.

Our selected France plans work differently: same-area data reload is supported within active validity, without extending that expiry. Check which rule applies before adding data.

For a forty-five-day stay expecting 40GB and wanting one SIM Shop purchase, the 50GB/180-day option fits at A$149.95 with 10GB spare. The 50GB/30-day option is A$60 less, but ends fifteen days too soon. Here, it’s the extra time that makes the longer plan useful.

Orange’s purchase and activation guidance permits buying before departure, installing shortly before travel and activating at the destination. Follow those instructions for that service.

If the itinerary goes beyond France, check each destination before paying.
