Germany eSIMs: what a free profile and a four-week plan actually buy

CallYa S and M include ordinary German calls with 25 GB or 50 GB per four-week period. The free eSIM profile still needs identification and funding. For thirty days of modest app data, a thirty-day travel plan can cover the stay in one period, without providing a German number.

Compare the whole German trip, not just the free profile

Four weeks sounds close enough to a month until the German phone plan finishes two days before your holiday does… CallYa adds another distinction to the comparison: Vodafone supplies the eSIM profile free, while the data and calling package still needs to be funded.

CallYa can suit ordinary German calls and a larger data allowance, while a fixed travel-data plan can cover an app-based visit with the amount and days chosen before flying. Follow both purchases through identification and renewal over the whole stay, so the word “free” doesn’t end up making the decision for you.

We sell the SIM Shop plans below. The selected CallYa terms, public order form and identification guidance were checked on 25 October 2026. Prices remain in their original currencies: A$ for Australian dollars and € for euros.

CallYa includes ordinary German calls

Vodafone’s product information sheets give these two local packages:

Local offerHigh-speed dataPeriodGerman calls and textsVAT-inclusive fee
CallYa Allnet Flat S25 GB4 weeksIncluded flat rate€9.99
CallYa Allnet Flat M50 GB4 weeksIncluded flat rate€14.99

Both reduce to 64 kbps after their data allowance. That’s continued service at a much lower speed, so budget important data use within the high-speed amount. The advertised maximum before that threshold isn’t a speed guaranteed at your accommodation.

For 28 days needing 40 GB and ordinary German calls, M covers both, with 10 GB spare. S is 15 GB short. Our 50 GB travel option has enough data, but doesn’t include those calls.

S also supplies 200 shared minutes or texts from Germany to EU destinations; M supplies 500. Use 150 of S’s minutes and fifty shared units remain, not another two hundred texts. These are EU benefits, without an included Australian calling allowance, and special-number exclusions apply.

The free eSIM still needs identification and credit

Vodafone’s visitor eSIM route takes you through ordering, identification, installation and funding. The selected S summary shows €0 for the profile and delivery, with the €9.99 four-week package charge starting when funded. The free profile isn’t a free 25 GB holiday plan.

The public form asks for your name, birth date, nationality, residential address and email. Use your genuine details. Australia’s appearance in the nationality list isn’t, by itself, approval of an application or a particular passport.

For the video-identification route, Deutsche Post’s supported document list, version 14.0 dated 15 July 2026, includes Australian passport versions AUS_P9 and AUS_P10. The 2014 and 2022 dates identify document versions; your passport doesn’t need to have been issued on those exact days.

Use the identification link supplied after ordering, with your valid original passport, a camera and stable internet. Vodafone gives you thirty days to complete it. Wait for successful identification and the issued profile before buying credit for the number. A supported passport version makes this a viable application route, without guaranteeing approval for every document and set of details.

If the online application won’t accept your accurate details or document, Vodafone also has a shop route for taking details and checking identity in person. A hotel address shouldn’t be substituted for your home address simply to get through a residential-address field. If you need a connection before the local application is finished, arrange one separately; an unissued number won’t help a driver contact you on arrival.

Loading credit isn’t the same as paying the package fee

The visitor page lists €15 and €20 among its one-off credit amounts. Load €15 for S and the €9.99 package charge leaves €5.01, assuming no other charges. You’ve paid €15, but some remains as account credit. It isn’t a €15 package.

That leftover balance can matter at renewal. Starting with €20, the first S charge leaves €10.01. A second €9.99 charge leaves €0.02, again assuming an unchanged fee and no other spending. One payment from your card can therefore fund two successive package periods.

Vodafone’s holiday FAQ says there are no automatic debits, but the S and M packages renew every four weeks if there’s enough credit. Those can both be true: a renewal can spend money already on the account without taking another payment from your bank. Choose one-off funding if that’s what you want, and check whether optional automatic top-ups are switched on.

For thirty days, two S periods would total €19.98 in package charges under that model. Their allowances arrive in successive periods; they aren’t a single 50 GB balance available on day one.

If the account can’t pay the next package fee, Vodafone’s terms list fallback data at €0.03/MB, standard German calls at €0.09/minute and domestic SMS at €0.09 each. Just 100 MB at that data rate would cost €3. Keep mobile data off after the paid period ends until you’ve confirmed the next package is active.

For formal cancellation, use Vodafone’s linked form, supply the customer and number details and requested date, and retain its acknowledgement. The S/M sheets state one month’s notice. Leaving Germany, deleting the profile or submitting the form isn’t confirmation that the service has ended immediately; check the processed end date.

A travel-data plan can cover thirty days in one period

The SIM Shop Germany eSIM gives you one total data allowance for apps, maps and online bookings:

Total dataActive validityAUD price
1 GB7 daysA$5.95
3 GB30 daysA$13.95
5 GB30 daysA$17.95
10 GB30 daysA$27.95
20 GB30 daysA$44.95
50 GB180 daysA$149.95

For thirty days expecting 8 GB, the 10 GB/30-day plan fits at A$27.95 with 2 GB spare. The 5 GB option is too small, and one four-week CallYa period ends two days early. For that trip, the travel plan covers the whole stay in one period. Convert the actual euro and AUD totals if you also want to compare cost.

All six plans list O2 and Vodafone, including 4G/5G support. They start on first supported-network connection, with 180 days from purchase to begin. The allowance is a total balance without a daily refill. Hotspot availability depends on the network and device; same-area data reload is available within active validity, without extending the original end date.

These plans don’t include ordinary German numbers, calls or SMS. Keeping your Australian number available for existing accounts remains separate under your Australian carrier’s terms. Travel data doesn’t move its verification texts to a different inbox.

Check the next country before buying for Germany

Our Germany-only plans don’t include a UK or Swiss leg. CallYa’s roaming benefits have their own country terms; Vodafone appearing in a travel plan’s host-network list doesn’t give it CallYa’s roaming rights. Use the Europe buying guide when the itinerary needs more than Germany.

For a SIM Shop order, buy before departure, save the delivery email and install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Our Germany setup guide covers the phone steps; use the settings supplied with the selected plan.

Put the expiry beside your departure date before paying, so the allowance covers the time you actually need it. That is where the difference between a four-week package and the full holiday becomes a purchase decision rather than a surprise near the end.
