Price the data for both devices
If your stated budget is 2GB on the phone plus 6GB on a laptop, sharing needs 8GB before spare room. A 5GB total-data plan won’t fit that requirement, even if the phone itself uses very little. Add the laptop to Plan my trip rather than choosing a phone-only usage style.
With a daily plan, the busy day matters as well as the trip total. A 4GB laptop upload can exceed a 1GB daily high-speed allowance even when the week’s average looks small; the selected reset time and reduced-speed terms decide what happens next.
Japan has useful examples of separate sharing rules
For seven days in Japan, our 10Mbps unlimited plan includes 6GB to share across the whole trip; the full-speed plan has no separate sharing allowance under its listed terms. The longer local KDDI plans cover 11–21, 26 or 31 Japan calendar days and calculate shared data as the number of days minus one: a 31-day plan includes 30GB for sharing. After that, sharing may slow to around 128kbps. Heavy use on the phone is also reviewed over rolling three-day periods, with no published GB trigger, so unused sharing data doesn’t remove that rule. Connect one device and test the actual task
After landing, install on working Wi-Fi, select the travel line for data and follow its order-specific settings. Once mobile data works on the phone, enable Personal Hotspot/Mobile Hotspot and connect one device using the password shown on the phone.
Pause laptop updates, cloud sync and photo backups before testing a small webpage or file. Our laptop hotspot guide covers that preparation; a successful connection still isn’t a promise of work-grade upload speed or uptime.
