Choose enough days, then check phone and laptop use
Our Japan plans include a range at up to 10Mbps for 3–10 days, and a full-speed range for 3–21, 26 and 31 days. For 11–21, 26 and 31 days, the service uses local KDDI plans with different sharing, speed and expiry rules. Full-speed phone data does not automatically mean unlimited laptop sharing.
Local KDDI plans for longer trips
The local KDDI plans for 11–21, 26 and 31 days include unlimited data used directly on your phone. Heavy use is reviewed over a rolling three-day period and may slow to around 1Mbps, but the operator has not published a fixed GB amount that triggers this. Sharing has its own trip allowance: the number of plan days minus one, in GB. A 14-day plan therefore includes 13GB to share. Once that amount is used, sharing may slow to around 128kbps.
The date you first use KDDI data in Japan is Day 1, even if you connect late that evening. The plan ends at 23:59 Japan time on the final day, rather than lasting a full 24 hours for each day purchased. You also need to start by the date supplied with your eSIM; an unused plan may start automatically at that deadline.
Your phone must be unlocked, support eSIM and support KDDI, including LTE Band 18 or 26. Select this local eSIM for mobile data in Japan and keep its data roaming OFF. Keep roaming off on your usual SIM. These are Japan data-only plans, without standard calls, SMS, emergency calling, top-ups or extensions. Leave the eSIM installed: deletion can prevent reinstallation or transfer.

The 3–10-day full-speed plans do not set an amount of phone data that triggers a slowdown, and they have no separate sharing allowance. Actual speed still depends on your phone, coverage and the network. Follow their own setup instructions and start using them within the listed 60-day purchase window.

The 10Mbps plans limit connection speed to up to 10Mbps and include a separate amount for sharing across the trip. For example, the seven-day plan includes 6GB to share in total, rather than 6GB every day. Follow that plan’s setup instructions and start-by window.
Which plan fits?
For maps, messages and bookings, compare a fixed-data plan with unlimited before paying for more than you need. For laptop work or sharing, estimate hotspot use separately from phone use. A 31-day local KDDI plan has 30GB of hotspot data in total, even though on-device data is unlimited subject to fair use.
Choose a duration covering every Japan calendar day you need, including arrival and departure. Network speed and connected-device performance are not guaranteed. For a device you depend on for work, check coverage and compatibility before buying.
