Count the days you will actually use mobile data
A Paris stop and a longer journey can use the same apps but need different totals. Save train tickets, accommodation and useful maps on Wi-Fi, then include uploads, video calls and laptop use in the amount you expect to use while out.

A France allowance does not cover every onward stop
The selected plans below cover France. If the itinerary also needs data in another country, compare the Europe range’s exact country list. An unused France balance does not become an Italian or Swiss balance just because the trip continues.
Our current Europe plan lists 32 countries, including France. For a multi-country trip, check every stop against the current Europe country list and make sure the plan lasts for the whole trip. The older Europe 30+ Areas and Europe 35 Areas ranges had different country lists and are no longer current buying options.

Two worked France budgets
Start with a ten-day visit using an assumed 0.6GB a day, plus 1GB spare: that’s 7GB altogether. A fortnight at 0.8GB a day plus the same reserve needs 12.2GB. Those are planning inputs you can replace with your own use.

These are explicit inputs, not measured visitor averages. The 1GB reserve is already counted. To choose your own daily input, use the phone’s per-app mobile counter over a known period; on iPhone, Current Period needs a known reset date. A month-long counter is not one week’s use.
For the 7GB example, 5GB is 2GB short; 10GB leaves 3GB. For 12.2GB, 10GB is 2.2GB short; 20GB leaves 7.8GB. The latter costs A$10 more than 10GB. Both quoted offers last thirty days from first supported-network connection, with 180 days from purchase to start.
One trip allowance lets you use more data today and less tomorrow. A daily plan gives you fast data on a separate daily schedule, so unused fast data from a quiet day is not extra data for a busier one.

One total allowance, without a daily refill. Same-area data reload is available during running validity; it does not extend the original expiry. Sharing may depend on the network and your phone, so ask about the exact option if a laptop connection is essential.
Keep data from disappearing in the background
- Download offline maps and the first accommodation details while still on Wi-Fi.
- Set photo and cloud-backup apps to Wi-Fi only for the trip.
- Turn off automatic app updates and high-quality video autoplay on mobile data.
- If you need to share data with a laptop or another phone, treat hotspot as a separate requirement and check the selected plan’s current note rather than assuming it is included.
When the estimate is not enough
Do not assume every eSIM can be topped up or extended. Check the current order details and eSIM status first. If you need help choosing before purchase, email hello@thesimshop.com.au with your destinations, dates and whether you will use hotspot or video. It is much easier to choose a sensible allowance while you still have a coffee and stable Wi-Fi.
Set the phone up only after landing
Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.
When you install, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you intentionally use home-carrier roaming. On current iPhone software, the data-line path starts at Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; other iPhones may say Cellular or Mobile Data.
