How much data for international travel? A worked trip budget

For a useful starting estimate, use the planner on this page: choose your destination if needed, enter the first and last days you need data, then select how you will use your phone and whether you will share the connection. Compare the estimated amount with a plan lasting for the whole trip. The worked example below shows how we check…

Start with the trip you are actually taking

A single data total can hide three quite different jobs on an international trip. Work out what each country leg needs first, then compare a shared offer only if it actually includes those countries for the whole period. That gives you a useful budget without asking a global label to do the thinking.

Start with the planner above if you do not already know your daily usage. Choose the current destination or route first if needed, then add your dates, phone-use style and sharing needs. Its estimate already includes extra room, so do not add the same 25% again. The calculation below is a separate worked example.

Budget each country leg separately before comparing a shared plan. The worked 24-day itinerary below uses 3 current offers costing A$41.85 in total, with an explicitly assumed usage budget and a 25% buffer for each leg.

A worked example, with extra room for unexpected use

The example uses assumed amounts of phone data, rather than measured averages for every traveller. It adds any separate uploads, then 25% extra room for unexpected use. Entertainment downloaded on Wi-Fi and backups kept on Wi-Fi are outside this mobile-data budget.

Worked phone-data budget with a 25% planning buffer
Leg or offerAssumed useAfter adding 25%Plan covering this example
USA eSIM10 days × 0.35GB, plus 0.5GB of uploads = 4GBAbout 5GB, rounded up5GB / 30 days, A$14.95
Japan eSIM10 days × 0.35GB, plus 0.5GB of uploads = 4GBAbout 5GB, rounded up5GB / 30 days, A$14.95
New Zealand eSIM4 days × 0.35GB, plus 0.2GB of uploads = 1.6GBAbout 2GB, rounded up3GB / 30 days, A$11.95

The three parts of the choice are separate: enough data for each leg, enough days from that profile’s start, and the right included country. The basket totals A$41.85, but the allowances cannot be moved between its profiles. A quiet first leg does not donate unused data to a later one.

Use the countries named in the selected offer

USA eSIM supplies the checked 5GB/30-day example for United States. It covers that leg’s estimated 5GB; follow that eSIM’s own expiry and deadline for starting it.

Japan eSIM supplies the checked 5GB/30-day example for Japan. It covers that leg’s estimated 5GB; follow that eSIM’s own expiry and deadline for starting it.

New Zealand eSIM supplies the checked 3GB/30-day example for New Zealand. It covers that leg’s estimated 2GB; follow that eSIM’s own expiry and deadline for starting it.

Compare a shared regional option if it includes the same stops and its single period spans the whole relevant leg. It may save a profile change, but a larger shared bucket is not suitable if a required country or final day is missing.

Change the budget when the way you use the phone changes

A laptop upload, a video-heavy afternoon or mobile photo backup needs to be included in the amount you actually plan to transfer. For a daily offer, check the busiest day as well as the total: enough gigabytes across a week do not move tomorrow’s high-speed allowance into today.

Having enough data does not by itself confirm laptop sharing. These plans’ sharing support depends on the phone and network. If you need it for work, tell us the exact plan, phone, connected device and expected upload size before buying. If we cannot confirm that it will do the job, arrange another confirmed connection for that task.

Keep the setup and expiry with the chosen plan

Buy before flying and save the email, then install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Select the travel line for data, keep Australian-line data roaming and automatic switching off unless intentionally using the home carrier, and follow the issued travel-line roaming and APN instructions.

The USA eSIM, Japan eSIM, New Zealand eSIM pages show the selected current offers. The deadline to start using a plan is different from how many days it lasts once started. Adding data does not necessarily extend the original expiry. Keep those conditions with the plan you buy rather than with the broad destination label.
