For Italy, work out the amount from your trip length and phone habits, then choose a plan whose data and validity both cover it. A week of maps, tickets and messages is a different budget from a fortnight of uploading videos and sharing a laptop connection.
The planner above can do the first estimate for you. Enter your travel dates, choose your usage style and include any hotspot requirement. It shows an approximate data range and available plan choices. Read any limitation beside the result; a big allowance doesn't automatically settle hotspot permission or ordinary calling.
Two examples with the maths shown
Your recent mobile-data history is useful if it resembles how you'll use the phone in Italy. Here's how two trips work out using different recent totals:
| Recent use and trip | Calculation, including 25% buffer | Current fitting option |
|---|---|---|
| 6GB over 30 days; a 10-day trip | 6 ÷ 30 × 10 × 1.25 = 2.5GB | 3GB for 30 days, A$11.95 |
| 12GB over 30 days; a 14-day trip | 12 ÷ 30 × 14 × 1.25 = 7GB | 10GB for 30 days, A$24.95 |
If you don't have a comparable recent total, use the planner's usage styles. Neither method knows about a last-minute decision to upload the entire holiday in 4K. Add that expected use to your budget before choosing.
When using the planner's result, don't add another 25% on top: its estimate already includes a buffer.
The current Italy allowances
Our Italy eSIM has these fixed-data examples:
| Allowance | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1GB | 7 days | A$4.95 |
| 3GB | 30 days | A$11.95 |
| 5GB | 30 days | A$14.95 |
| 10GB | 30 days | A$24.95 |
| 20GB | 30 days | A$34.95 |
These are total allowances, not daily amounts. If you use 2GB of a 5GB plan on one day, 3GB remains for later use within its validity. The plans in this table start running validity at the first supported network connection and have a 180-day purchase-to-start window.
For the 2.5GB example, the 1GB option fails both the amount and the ten-day duration. A cheaper sticker price isn't useful if the plan runs out before you do.
If a laptop is coming too
Budget the laptop separately when that use isn't already in your phone history. Suppose you've allowed 2GB for the phone, 3GB for work calls and 2GB for uploads. That's 7GB, or 8.75GB after a 25% buffer. The 10GB option covers that budget.
Its hotspot availability still depends on the network and device. Before buying it specifically for essential work, ask us: “Can you confirm hotspot support and any sharing limit for the Italy 10GB/30-day option on my phone? I need it for these work calls and uploads.” If we can't establish that fit, arrange to do the work on a suitable Wi-Fi connection rather than relying on an unconfirmed tethering setup.
To reduce surprise laptop use, pause cloud synchronisation and automatic updates before connecting it to your phone. Keep large backups for Wi-Fi. That changes what you consume; it doesn't make the plan's allowance larger.
Calls and extra countries are separate decisions
These Italy travel-data examples don't provide an Italian number, ordinary call minutes or SMS. If you need those, our Italy eSIM, roaming and local-plan comparison explains actual local calling offers and their separate EU roaming allowances.
The Italy-only plans above don't cover an onward stay in France or Switzerland. If either is on the itinerary, use a plan explicitly covering those stops or buy the relevant separate allowance. The same comparison explains why a local offer's large Italy allowance may be smaller outside Italy.
Save the setup email before departure. Install after landing on airport Wi-Fi that lets you sign in and load a webpage. If it won't connect, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady, trusted connection and follow the device installation steps.
