Match Italy data and calls to the whole itinerary
An Italian tourist plan with 200 GB can cover a lot of phone use in Italy. Continue to France, though, and the allowance available there may be much smaller. The local offers below include a separate EU roaming portion within the headline total.
For an Italy-only holiday, decide whether you need app data or an ordinary calling line. A travel-data allowance can handle maps, tickets and online bookings. A local offer can add an Italian number, ordinary calls and substantially more data. WINDTRE also sells an eSIM, so you can compare those services without assuming the local option must be a physical card.
We sell the SIM Shop plans below. Local offers were checked on 21 October 2026, and the WINDTRE contact screen on 20 October. Our store prices and terms were checked on 25 October. We’ve kept prices in their original currencies and separated a published price from a completed purchase.
WINDTRE’s digital route has eligibility and price qualifications
WINDTRE advertises the one-month Digital offer at €25 including SIM and activation. During our 20 October check, selecting that product reached a contact/document screen showing €25 payable now. We didn’t complete identity checks or payment, so that observation doesn’t establish a final charge or successful eSIM issue.
Its generic reminder text separately mentions €10 for the SIM and €0.30 for iMessage, despite the included-SIM headline. The linked tariff document treats the iMessage component differently again. We therefore use €25 as the advertised offer and previously observed pre-payment amount, not a guaranteed all-in budget. Ask whether the displayed €25 is the final total and whether a €10 SIM or iMessage activation charge is added if you’re considering it. TIM’s basic components and the selected SIM Shop data prices are separately specified below; each still needs to fit the service you want.
The tax-code condition matters before you start that order. The sales page describes foreign or overseas-born new customers without an Italian-registered tax code; its linked tariff document includes overseas-born customers both with and without one. An overseas-born Australian visitor without a registered Italian code fits the shared wording. If you already have an Italian-registered code, ask WINDTRE which condition applies before relying on this offer. The two documents don’t give a consistent answer. Use your accurate details when applying. WINDTRE sales conditions, Tourist Pass Digital tariff document.
TIM’s general activation rules require identification, an identity-document copy and a tax code, so its published process has a tax-code step as well as identity checking. A traveller who wants phone data without arranging that local calling line can use the SIM Shop options below; a traveller requiring the local number must complete the operator’s actual registration. TIM prepaid rules, section 2.
What the local offers actually include
| Selected offer | Italy data | EU data within that allowance | Benefit period | Published purchase components |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TIM Tourist | 200 GB | 23 GB | 30 days from activation | €14.99 offer + €10 SIM = €24.99; activation fee €0 |
| TIM Tourist with its activation-time data add-on | 200 GB base + 100 GB add-on | 23 GB base + 8 GB add-on | Both stated as 30 days | €24.99 base/SIM + €5 add-on = €29.99 |
| WINDTRE Tourist Pass Digital, one-month version | 200 GB | 23 GB | 30 days from activation | €25 advertised with SIM and activation included; component conflict explained below |
TIM and WINDTRE both advertise unlimited ordinary domestic calls, subject to their personal-use conditions, and 100 minutes to specified international destinations. These are calling allowances on local lines; our Italy data eSIMs don’t provide an Italian number, ordinary minutes or an SMS bundle. TIM Tourist, WINDTRE Tourist Pass Digital.
TIM’s €5 add-on is sold in a TIM store when activating Tourist. It isn’t a promise that you can buy the same add-on online halfway through the holiday. Two independent new TIM Tourist lines have €49.98 of published basic SIM-and-offer charges, rather than one €24.99 payment covering both travellers. Airport resellers can sell different packages, so those figures describe the named operator offer rather than every counter displaying a TIM logo.
A sensible amount of data can be the better purchase
Our current Italy eSIM options include 5 GB for 30 days at A$14.95, 10 GB for 30 days at A$24.95 and 20 GB for 30 days at A$34.95. These are total allowances, with validity starting at the first supported network connection. The listed networks are Iliad, TIM and Wind, with 4G/5G access where available; sharing a network name with a local operator doesn’t establish identical speed or reception.
For a 14-day holiday expecting 8 GB on the phone, our 10 GB plan fits at A$24.95. It covers the stated need with 2 GB spare, while 5 GB is short by 3 GB. The local 200 GB offers also cover that data budget. They become more useful if you need the calling service or expect substantially heavier use.
For an eight-day visit using only 800 MB, choose our 3 GB, 30-day option at A$11.95. The cheaper 1 GB plan at A$4.95 has only seven days of validity, so it misses the final day despite having enough data. Those examples are planning inputs, not claims about the average Australian’s holiday usage.
Hotspot on our Italy plans depends on the device and network. We’d therefore choose these for the on-phone examples above, rather than recommend them as a verified essential laptop connection. WINDTRE expressly permits sharing the included allowance by Wi-Fi without an additional hotspot charge, which makes its local offer relevant when tethering is a requirement; that permission still doesn’t guarantee the signal inside a particular apartment. WINDTRE hotspot terms.
Rome, then France: why 200 GB doesn’t answer the whole question
Suppose your route needs 10 GB in Italy and another 25 GB in France, all within the selected period. Neither base local offer’s 23 GB EU portion covers that onward 25 GB need. A large Italian balance doesn’t remove the 2 GB roaming shortfall.
TIM’s activation-time add-on publishes another 8 GB of EU-usable data, alongside the base 23 GB. That gives 31 GB of stated EU allowance before relevant use, rather than exporting the full combined 300 GB. If you want that larger option, choose it when activating in store and have the base offer and add-on both recorded on the order; buying the base first and assuming the extra EU data can be added later is the wrong sequence. TIM add-on terms.
Our Italy-only option isn’t the answer to that France leg either. Use the Europe eSIM comparison for a regional purchase, or buy separate France coverage. The same distinction applies to a country appearing on a calling list: being allowed to call Switzerland from Italy doesn’t mean Swiss mobile data is included.
WINDTRE’s destination list, for example, includes Australia and limits Switzerland to landlines. Those are directions and number types for calls from Italy. They aren’t roaming inclusions, and WINDTRE’s terms explicitly remove the UK and Gibraltar from its EU tariff treatment from 16 June 2025. A London stop needs its own coverage decision. Included calling destinations.
The offer expiring doesn’t always close the line
TIM’s detailed terms allow customer-requested reactivation, including early reactivation that resets remaining minutes and data. If you restart with 60 GB left, don’t expect that balance to become a 260 GB allowance. Budget on the 100 international minutes specified in its Italian text and headline; the inconsistent 200-minute reference in the English detail isn’t an extra entitlement.
TIM also lists a €3.99 monthly basic-plan fee, waived while Tourist or another qualifying minutes-and-data offer stays active. To retain the line without that fixed basic-plan fee, use the published 40916 or MyTIM route to change to a basic plan without fixed charges before relying on the expired Tourist service. Changing the basic plan is a separate action from deleting an eSIM from the phone. TIM detailed conditions.
WINDTRE’s specific tariff document says the Digital offer ends after 30 days and the SIM is automatically deactivated 60 days after activation, without reactivation. Those are different dates. We wouldn’t buy its one-month version for a 32-day data requirement or as a promise that every underlying charge ends on day 30. If you want to close the line explicitly, WINDTRE’s linked general terms provide a request through 159, a WINDTRE store, or the app/customer area’s WILL assistance, with a general 30-day notice period. Keep the closure acknowledgement; turning the line off on your phone isn’t the same action. Digital tariff document, general terms, section 6.3.
For a longer Italy-only, data-only example, 40 GB over 45 days, our 50 GB, 180-day plan at A$149.95 covers both inputs in one purchase. The 50 GB, 30-day version at A$89.95 has the same data amount but ends 15 days too early. Same-area reload within an existing validity isn’t an extension of that expiry.
For a SIM Shop order, buy before departure and save the email. Install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, following the order instructions and our Italy setup guide. Before paying for any option, check the data and days for each part of the route, including the countries after Italy.
