Our Vietnam data planner at the top of this guide can help turn that into a starting estimate. Add your dates and choose the closest travel style: maps and messages, social and video calls, or streaming and hotspot. It'll show a rough data range and, when there's a suitable option, a current plan for those dates.
Below, we'll show how estimates of 3.8GB, 6.6GB and 16GB translate into our 5GB, 10GB and 20GB plans. That way, you can see what you're paying for before you choose.
Turn your daily use into a trip budget
If you want to refine the planner's estimate, look at the apps in your phone's mobile-data counter over a period you can account for. Add mobile music, video uploads or laptop use if those will be extra on this trip; leave them out if you'll keep them on Wi-Fi. A mostly-at-home monthly total can hide that difference.
Multiply your assumed daily amount by the days you'll need data, then add a reserve you choose. These examples are planning assumptions, not measured app consumption:

Replace the daily figure with your own estimate. Grab trips, translation and finding a hotel in Hanoi may be part of the day; a cloud photo backup or work download deserves its own line in the budget. Don't count it twice if it was already in your daily estimate.

For the 3.8GB example, 5GB fits. For 6.6GB, 5GB falls short and 10GB fits. For 16GB, compare 20GB. The allowance is shared across the plan's validity, not refreshed each day. These selected plans stop providing data when their allowance is used.
The purchase-to-start window is separate. Our checked 10GB offer must start within 60 days of purchase, then runs for 30 days from its first supported-network connection. Other Vietnam offers can have different start windows. Don't buy months ahead on the assumption that everything has 180 days to start.
Compare the current Vietnam plans before paying, especially if your dates or requirements change.
Count border crossings and hotspot separately
Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are within Vietnam, but a detour into Laos or Cambodia changes the coverage question. Our Asia 7 Areas plan includes Vietnam and Cambodia, plus Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. It excludes Laos. The checked 10GB/30-day option is A$34.95, with one allowance shared across the covered countries.
For a laptop, there's one point we can't confirm from these selected fixed-data terms: hotspot availability depends on the network and phone. Send us the offer you're considering and your phone model, and ask whether it supports your planned laptop use. If that can't be confirmed, don't rely on it as your only work connection. The 20GB label alone doesn't settle that requirement.
Prepare before the flight, install after landing
Save your accommodation address, pickup details and setup email before departure. Download the things you already know you'll need; leave some budget for changes you can't download in advance.
After landing, join airport Wi-Fi, finish its sign-in and open a normal webpage. Then install from your SIM Shop email. If airport Wi-Fi won't work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Follow our device-specific installation guide and the order's roaming instructions. Keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you've deliberately chosen your carrier's roaming service.
If you need help choosing, send us your dates, stops and whether you'll use hotspot. “Two weeks, Hanoi to Hoi An, one phone and no laptop” gives us much more to work with than “a decent amount of data”.
