Keep data from disappearing in the background
- Download offline maps and the first accommodation details while still on Wi-Fi.
- Set photo and cloud-backup apps to Wi-Fi only for the trip.
- Turn off automatic app updates and high-quality video autoplay on mobile data.
- If you need to share data with a laptop or another phone, treat hotspot as a separate requirement and check the selected plan’s current note rather than assuming it is included.

How much data do I need for a week in Vietnam?
One to two gigabytes for light use on hotel wifi. Three to five if you are moving between cities using maps, Grab and messaging through the day. Seven or more if you stream or hotspot.
Is 10GB enough for two weeks in Vietnam?
For most people, yes. A two-week Vietnam trip often involves plenty of navigation between Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An or the delta. Ten gigabytes over 30 days comfortably covers maps, messaging, bookings and normal browsing for that kind of trip. Stream or hotspot regularly and you may need more.
What is the cheapest Vietnam plan worth buying?
For a short trip with light use, our Vietnam 3GB over 30 days at A$11.95 is where we would start. For a regular week, 5GB over 30 days at A$14.95 matches the 3 to 5GB planning range in this guide. Choose 10GB over 30 days at A$19.95 for roughly two weeks, heavier use or more headroom.
Does one plan cover the whole country?
You do not need a new plan when moving between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. The product is for Vietnam, and our current Vietnam plans list MobiFone, Viettel Mobile and Vinaphone. Actual service still depends on a supported network having coverage where you are, so country-wide product scope is not a promise of signal everywhere.
How long do I have to use it after buying?
All our current Vietnam plans give you 180 days to start. That is separate from the plan’s active validity. On a 30-day plan, the 30 days begins when the eSIM first connects to a supported network in Vietnam. Buying two months before the trip is within the current start window.
What if I am also visiting Cambodia, Thailand or Laos?
Check the regional option before buying several single-country plans. Our Asia 7 Areas plan covers Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, with 10GB over 30 days at A$34.95. That 10GB is shared across the trip, not 10GB in each country. Vietnam alone is A$19.95 for the same data and validity, so adding a second covered country is the point to compare the totals. Laos is not included, so check every stop by name.
What uses data without me noticing?
Photo and cloud backup, app updates, and video that autoplays inside social apps. Set all three to wifi only for the trip. It usually matters more than buying a bigger plan.
Do I need data as soon as I land?
If someone is meeting you or you need a Grab, yes. Buy the plan before you fly, save the setup email and check your phone at home. After landing, join working airport wifi and install from the saved email. If the airport connection is not usable, use hotel wifi or another steady trusted connection instead.
Set the phone up only after landing
Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.
When you install, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you intentionally use home-carrier roaming. On current iPhone software, the data-line path starts at Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; other iPhones may say Cellular or Mobile Data. When the estimate is not enough
Do not assume every eSIM can be topped up or extended. Check the current order details and eSIM status first. It is much easier to choose a sensible allowance while you still have a coffee and stable Wi-Fi.
