Roaming vs eSIM

Five-country Asia trip: regional eSIM, Australian roaming or local SIMs?

For the 14-day, 9.5GB example below, a regional 10GB/30-day data plan at A$34.95 covers the route and amount. Include Australian roaming or a local calling plan if you need ordinary calls or a local number; our data-only example does not supply those services.

For a trip through Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, a regional data eSIM can cover the whole route on one profile. Your Australian roaming service may be the better fit if ordinary calls on your usual number matter. Local plans are worth considering when you need a local calling service, rather than just internet access.

Start with the job you need the phone to do. A WhatsApp call uses data; calling a restaurant through the normal phone dialler needs an ordinary calling service. The data eSIMs compared here don't include a local number, ordinary minutes or SMS.

Compare the same trip, not the biggest headline allowance

Take the 14-day example from our data guide: a 9.5GB budget, including a 25% buffer. All the data is needed within the five named countries.

OptionCurrent price for this choiceWhat it covers
Asia 7 Areas fixed 10GBA$34.9510GB shared across seven included countries, valid 30 days
Five-country Unlimited, 15 daysA$69.95The five-country route, without a total cap or fair-use threshold in this offer's current terms
Five-country daily 1GB/day, 7 daysA$55.95Seven days only; it doesn't cover this 14-day trip

For this budget, we'd choose the A$34.95 fixed-data option. It covers the amount and period, and its included countries are Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines. More countries on the label can still produce a lower price for the route you actually need.

For the calculation behind that 9.5GB example, use our five-country data guide. For your own dates and habits, the trip planner estimates an allowance and shows the relevant choices.

When Australian roaming earns its place

Telstra lists all five destinations in Zone 2: A$10 per charged Day Pass period, with 2GB and standard calls/SMS. Fourteen charged periods cost A$140, excluding your home plan and extras. Upfront periods last 24 hours from first use. Making or receiving calls, sending SMS or using data can trigger a charge; receiving SMS alone doesn't. Telstra's current Day Pass details.

The A$140 example assumes 14 separate charged periods, not that every 14-day itinerary must generate that exact bill. Roaming includes a calling service that our data-only example doesn't, so the difference isn't purely price per GB.

If your employer pays for roaming, or you need frequent ordinary calls on your Australian number, keeping that setup may be worth the cost. If everyone you'll call is happy using an app, a separate travel-data allowance can do the internet job for less in this example.

Turning off your Australian line's data roaming doesn't prevent every call, SMS or voicemail charge. If you need that line active for verification codes, our bank SMS guide explains the separate charge triggers.

When local plans are worth the extra setup

A local plan can make sense when you need that country's ordinary number or calling inclusions. On a five-country itinerary, don't treat a local plan's domestic allowance as permission to use it in all the other countries. Compare its actual roaming inclusions with the stops where you'll need it.

Before paying, ask the operator: โ€œDoes this exact package include ordinary calls where I'll use it, and how much data is available in each of my other four countries?โ€ Keep the written package details. If the answer only covers one country, price the other stops separately; don't count the domestic GB five times.

A regional data eSIM avoids choosing a new data plan at each border. It doesn't magically supply local calling numbers at each stop. Even a very organised eSIM has limits.

If you're taking a laptop

The five-country Unlimited offer supports hotspot without a separate hotspot allowance. Its listed typical roaming average is 10 to 20Mbps, with actual performance depending on the network. Asia 7 fixed-data hotspot availability depends on the network and device.

For work that requires explicit tethering permission, we'd favour the Unlimited option over assuming the cheaper fixed offer has identical terms. Keep another connection available for a meeting you can't miss.

Buy before departure, save the email and install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi. If airport Wi-Fi won't connect, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady, trusted connection. These five-country offers have a 60-day start window; the Asia 7 fixed offer in the table has 180 days. Both start running validity at their first supported network connection.
