First identify the iPad you actually own
Check the model in Settings, General, About, including its model number and purchase region. Similar-looking iPads can have different connectivity hardware. Apple’s supported-model list is a useful device check; it does not certify every travel provider’s plan for that device.
Before buying for direct iPad use, send us the model number from Settings → General → About, country of purchase and selected plan. We’ll check that combination; an Add eSIM button alone doesn’t establish that our offer supports it. This guide does not promise catalogue-wide iPad support. A smartphone compatibility result should not be treated as a tablet approval.
Choose for how the tablet will be used
- Occasional bookings or email: a phone hotspot can avoid managing another profile, provided the phone’s selected plan permits tethering.
- Working while someone else takes the phone out: a separately supported tablet connection gives independence. A hotspot cannot follow two people in different places.
- Long train or coach days: consider the phone’s battery and where you can charge it. A shared connection adds another job to the phone that holds your tickets and maps.
- Large downloads: compare the hotspot allowance with the phone allowance. The two are not always identical, particularly on unlimited offers.
A two-person example
Alex needs a phone for navigating while Sam stays at the accommodation to work on an iPad. One phone plan is convenient while they are together, but it leaves Sam without that connection when Alex leaves. The practical choice is a verified separate tablet plan, dependable accommodation internet, or a second compatible phone and plan. Buying more gigabytes on Alex’s phone does not solve the separation.
If the iPad is only used for half an hour at dinner, sharing may be enough. Include that half-hour’s video, file syncing and updates in the same data budget as the phone.
Set up a hotspot with a clear limit
Check these five settings on the phone and tablet before sharing data.
- Confirm hotspot permission and any cap on the exact phone offer.
- Use a strong hotspot password and connect only the intended devices.
- Pause photo backup, app downloads and large cloud synchronisation on the tablet.
- Check the remaining-data reading before and after a short session.
- Turn the hotspot off when the session ends.
For a verified direct SIM Shop tablet setup, buy before the flight and install only after landing on stable Wi-Fi, following the instructions for that specific order. Do not test a single profile by installing it on the phone first and trying to move it later.
What about a laptop or Apple Watch?
A laptop connected to your phone uses its hotspot allowance; our Windows and Mac checklist covers background downloads. A watch has a different carrier setup. Read the Apple Watch travel guide before assuming a phone QR can be installed on it.
