Decide whether the phone will be with you
If you will carry your paired iPhone, start by checking what the watch can do through that connection. The phone may use a travel eSIM for internet while the watch remains paired. This does not convert the phone plan into a standalone watch subscription or guarantee every app feature away from the phone.
If you want to run, swim or go out without the phone, independent connectivity is the question. A phone plan’s destination list cannot answer whether the watch’s own mobile service supports roaming there.
Check with the carrier that supplies the watch service
Apple says international watch roaming requires carrier support for roaming and VoLTE, with destination coverage determined by that carrier. Supported hardware and software are also required. Apple Watch For Your Kids has different rules, and Apple says international roaming is not supported for watches set up that way.
Ask the watch carrier: “Does my [watch model] on this account support independent mobile roaming in [country], what will it cost, and what must I enable before departure?” If it doesn’t, plan to carry the paired phone or use the functions that work offline on that watch. Having an Australian phone roaming allowance is not proof that its companion watch is included.
Three travel situations
- Sightseeing with the phone: keep the usual pairing and test the apps you need. Budget the phone’s data and battery for the day’s use.
- A run without the phone: confirm independent watch service, or prepare the functions that work offline on your model. Do not assume messages or navigation updates will arrive.
- A child or family member’s watch: check the setup type and its restrictions. A family plan at home does not establish overseas standalone service.
For each situation, decide how the wearer will contact someone if the intended connection is unavailable. A screen showing a saved map or previously received message does not prove the watch currently has internet.
Do not experiment with the phone’s installation code
The SIM Shop’s phone installation instructions are for the intended compatible device and order. We do not confirm Apple Watch compatibility for those phone offers. Do not scan a phone QR into another device or delete a working phone profile in an attempt to move it.
If the purchase is actually for a tablet, read our iPad and hotspot guide; tablet eligibility is another separate check.
A short checklist before leaving
- Write down the watch model and whether it has cellular hardware.
- Confirm the setup type and current watch service with the carrier.
- Get destination eligibility and charging details for the watch itself.
- Test essential apps with the phone nearby and, where appropriate, apart.
- Keep charging and an alternative contact method available.
Apple’s current support page is linked below for setup and eligibility. Carrier confirmation is still needed for the actual overseas service. For the phone’s role, use our Wi-Fi calling guide and battery checklist.
Sources and checks
